Changing the Education LandscapeEducation in the 21st Century is no longer just about grades. It is more about the learning process and the collection of experiences that shape each student, as well as the ability to translate and apply them into a real world context.

This is why Taylor’s 2nd Transcript or the Shine Award Programme is crucial. A first in Malaysia and in Southeast Asia, the Shine Award Programme complements and supplements academic learning by providing expanded opportunities for students to develop intellectual knowledge, lifelong learning skills, and emotional/social development through a structured platform.

Benchmarked against global best practices, the programme focuses on equipping students with future work skills that will place them ahead of their peers from the moment they graduate.

The Shine Award programme runs alongside the University’s formal curriculum and culminates with the award of the 2nd Transcript to the student, in addition to the Academic Transcript. It is thus a recognition of our students’ extra-curricular achievements both on and off campus, aligning them to the changing demands of the 21st century workplace.

The University’s commitment to producing world-class, industry-ready graduates is supported by the Taylor’s Career Services Centre, which seeks to enhance the students’ employability by instilling the right tools and knowledge through various initiatives.

Established in 1998, Taylor’s School of Computing and IT (SOCIT) aims to cater to the rising demands in the ICT field. Our mission is to develop innovation-driven computing and IT graduates, who are able to shape the future of technology and create a positive impact on society.

The School’s innovative and relevant curriculum is anchored in its close relationships with professional bodies, industry members, government departments and academia, to ensure our graduates stay ahead of the curve, and develop into experts and problem-solvers that fulfil the needs of the industry.

Taylor’s School of Computing and IT (SOCIT) offers dual award degree programmes in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies, University of the West of England (UWE), UK. A quality review committee, comprising academics from both institutions, is established for quality assurance and the moderation of the standards of the programmes, which includes curriculum and assessment. Students will receive certification and academic transcripts from both Taylor’s University and UWE upon completion of their degrees at Taylor’s.

Dating as far back as 1595, UWE represents a long and well-established tradition of first-class professional education and training.

With over 30,000 students, UWE is a modern, growing university situated in the thriving harbour side of Bristol.

UWE has over 500 available workstations in their teaching laboratories as well as large open-access labs providing PC and Unix-based machines. They also host their own servers to provide Windows, Linux and Unix-based operating systems.

The Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies has strong linkage with the industry, including a multi-million pound strategic partnership with Hewlett-Packard, which has contributed towards an upgrade of computer technology and infrastructure across the campus.

The Department has an active research community, which makes significant contribution towards various groups of studies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Complex Co-operative Systems and Unconventional Computing.

1.Experience is at the heart of the learning process at SOCIT. We ensure our students are equipped with the relevant skills and expertise to harness the potential of software to solve real-world problems and challenges of the future. Our graduates are groomed to become more than just specialised technicians - they are trained to be performing innovators and problem-solvers of the industry.

To achieve this, we employ a variety of teaching and learning strategies that expose our students to real-life scenarios and industry-relevant experiences. These challenging yet rewarding experiences enhance students’ learning and enable them to hone their skills.

Guest Lectures

We invite eminent personalities form various Industries and Institutions to lend valuable information from their experiences to our students. Guest Lecture is a way of enriching our students with the latest from the industry. Through guest lectures students are bestowed with knowledge about industry needs, latest technical updates and trends in line with Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC). Some of the organisations that have delivered guest lectures at SOCIT include:

Software Focus

The School emphasises the importance of keeping abreast with the latest industry software. In order to ensure that our programmes remain ahead of the curve, we pioneered the incorporation of industry software such as forensics analysis software (e.g. EnCase Forensic), which is widely used in the ICT industry. This provides our graduates with an added advantage, and the ability to integrate seamlessly into the industry upon graduation.

Competitions

Students are given the opportunity to sharpen their programming and problem-solving skills through participation in various national and international competitions. This challenges them to apply their knowledge, obtain feedback from experts, demonstrate teamwork, boost their confidence, as well as enhance their communication and business presentation skills. The School encourages and enables students to undertake innovative projects in its quest to nurture budding technoprenuers. Some of these projects have featured in nation-wide competitions and have been awarded for their accomplishments. A selection of projects are as follows:

traquer Traquer is an innovative solution aims to reduce road accidents caused by buses and provide safety assurance and peace of mind for the bus passengers. To achieve road safety, Traquer provides an integrated web-based and mobile solution that includes incident reporting and management, real-time alerts, tracking, reporting and management coupled with data analytics for end users. Traquer is also a social empowered road safety app and acts as a voice of public transport users

project Feedon! With the vision to solve world hunger and to address food wastage and revolutionize charity food distribution in Malaysia, FeedOn! gives charity homes easy access to excess food from manufacturers. The app provides a platform to match manufacturing companies that have excess food production with charitable institutions. Once there is a match, volunteers will be prompted and mobilized to pick up the food and donate it to those in need, creating another avenue for volunteers to help out more

pocket mallPocket Mall is a mobile app that gives an online platform for those who want to start their own business using the Internet. The app encourages users, particularly business-minded college and university students to sell new or hand-me-down clothes, shoes, accessories, or anything in between to gain extra point

ensuererEnsurer is an online-based insurance product that insures damaged, lost or stolen smartphones and other portable digital gadgets. Without the need for agents, Ensurer crowdsources funds from people, who pay for monthly subscriptions for the product

Wakker AppWakker App is a precise journey planner that integrates all types of public transportation and routes. Featuring three phases of function, this mobile app aims to improve its user’s public transportation experience. The School of Computing and IT led by a strong research culture, aims to develop future ICT experts who are able to look beyond Information and Communications Technology. The School believes in grooming graduates who apart from being well-versed in technical knowledge, can also understand, appreciate and analyze their role as well as impact on society’s progress and existence.

The staff strive to create ethically-sensitive ICT experts who are aware of the professional, social and environmental implications of their work. And, they are able to contribute positively towards the development of the future by providing solutions to some of the challenges faced by the society in the 21st century.

The world of computing is rapidly evolving and increasingly globalised. In order to keep abreast with global trends and bridge the gap between academia and the industry, SOCIT has developed a web of relationships with international technology companies and entrepreneurs. These pillars of the ICT community provide the School with valuable insight into the industry and shed light on the fundamental shifts in IT consumption and consumer behaviour.

The School has successfully established strategic alliances to facilitate dynamic knowledge exchange, enabling our students to reap the rewards of these collaborations. In turn, the School serves as an ideation lab and a gateway to innovation, talent and research activities for the industry.

We also place a strong emphasis on well-rounded education, to produce graduates who are not just academically-sound but also well-equipped with the relevant soft skills and capabilities required to carve a successful career.

Admission and Application Information

How To applyStep 1: Choose your programme• Please read through Taylor’s University prospectus and / or website for information on the interested programmes and available intakes. Alternatively, you may meet our education counsellors for necessary advice.

Step 2: Check entry requirements• Check the published entry requirement (including English Language requirement, if applicable) and ensure you fulfill all necessary criteria for the programme you wish to apply.

Step 3: Prepare your documents • Compile all certified true copy of the required supporting documents. You may refer to the document Checklist in the Application for Admission Form.

Step 4: Submit your application• Please read through all the instructions on the Application for Admission Form and complete all the sections on it. Your application can only be processed when the Admissions Office receive all the required documentation.• An application fee and processing fee (for programme requires interview) must be paid when you submit your application. • If you do not hold a Malaysian identification card or Malaysian passport, you must apply for a student pass (a non-refundable international student charge or EMGS is required). Note: Applicants holding Dependent Pass and Malaysian MY Second Home (MM2H) visa are required to convert to Student Pass while studying at Taylor’s. Please consult our officers at the International Office for more information.

Step 5: Receive application outcome• After the assessment of your application, you will receive a letter from the Admissions Office that notify the application outcome.• To secure a place at Taylor’s University, you must accept the offer before the deadline stated in the letter with relevant fee payment to the University. The details on how to accept the offer will also be stated in your letter of offer. • For non-Malaysian applicant, you will receive status of your Student Visa application to study at the University.

Step 6: Prepare to attend the Orientation• Please login to www.taylors.edu.my/orientation to download your Orientation Guide one (1) week prior to the commencement date. You are required to attend the orientation activities as per schedule.
