Chapter 1Statistical Terminology and Health Care Data
StatisticsCollection, organization, summarizing, and analysis of
numerical dataStatistical reports often refer to the “number of” an
event Analysis of statistical data is done to draw reasonable
decisions and conclusions about the dataHealth care statistics, employment statistics, vital
statistics

Chapter 1Statistical Terminology and Health Care Data
School of Health Science
•Data are used to derive information•Data are facts in numerical form•Data are collected on:
-Inpatients, outpatients, emergency department patients, surgical patients, employees, encounters, and financials
Chapter 1Statistical Terminology and Health Care Data
Demographic data Used in:
In planning and disease controlBy hospital administrators to analyze the health care
service needs of their communities and service areasTo identify the geographic density of a given area such
as a county, city, suburb

Data Uses Used in decision making for management and patient care decisions Patient care decisions include:
Hospital-acquired infections Medication errors Diagnosis-specific length of stay
Statistical reports: Example: Indices Birth Death Disease
Research: Treatment protocols

Chapter 1Statistical Terminology and Health Care Data
Role of Heath Information Management (HIM)Professionals collect, preserve, and present data in
health care facilitiesHIM practitioners require a basic understanding of
statistics HIM practitioners can assure accuracy of data in the data
collection process

Chapter 2Health Care Overview and Patient Data Collection
Two ways to collect data include: Concurrent
During hospitalization Retrospective
Following discharge Primary source
Medical record including physician notes, lab reports, surgical reports Secondary source
Abstracts, lists, indexes, registries Indexes
Computer generated list to locate information Master Patient Disease
Registries Repository of abstracted data
Cancer/tumor registry Trauma registry

Chapter 3Mathematical Review
An amount less than oneDigits to right of decimal point are decimal digitsDecimal point separates the fraction of the whole number from
the whole number itselfA percentage is the number of times something happens out of
every one hundred times It tells us how many hundredths are of interest
A percentage is a specific rate or ratio followed by the percent sign (%)
A percentage is a fraction expressed in hundredthsExample: ¾ = 0.75 = 75%

Chapter 3Mathematical Review
A fraction is aFragment of a numberPart of a wholeWritten as ¾
Numerator Number above the line
DenominatorNumber below the line
QuotientResult of dividing denominator into the numerator
Example: to determine the quotient using the fraction ¾ divide denominator into the numerator
3 divided by 4 is .75

Chapter 3Mathematical Review
An average is the value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of numbers by the number of values
An average is also referred to as the arithmetic mean to distinguish it from the median and modeThe average is the sum of all scores divided by the number of all
values involvedRounding approximates a total or final numberRounding data is done to arrive at a usable numberNumbers are rounded to the nearest 10, 100, etc.Rounding to the nearest ten means to round the number to the
nearest multiple of ten or 10, 20, 30, 40, etc.

Chapter 3Mathematical Review
Converting a fraction to percentage Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100
Converting a ratio to percentage: Divide the fraction Multiply the quotient by 100
Converting Decimal to Percentage Move the decimal point two places to the right of the decimal point and add the
percent sign Or multiply the decimal by 100
Converting Percentage to Decimal Cross out the percent sign and move the decimal point two places to the left of
the decimal point Example: 65% = .65
If the percentage is only one digit: Place a 0 in front of it and place the decimal point in front of the 0 Example: 5% = .05; 105% = 1.05

Chapter 3Mathematical Review
Converting Percentage to FractionCross out the percent sign and place the number in
the numeratorPlace 100 in the denominator
Example:45% converted to a fractionReplace the percent sign with 100
Write as a fraction = 45/100 Reduce to the lowest fraction = 9/20 45 and 100 can both be divided by 5 Therefore, the lowest fraction is 9/20
