Once in a Semester 08.08.2014 The Advisory Board Meeting of School of Management Studies was held on 8/8/2014 in
Vels University campus.
The meeting started with the welcome address by Dr.K.P.Kumar, Director, School of
Management Studies. A video presentation on the functioning of the department during the
previous academic year was presented to the Members. Dr.K.P.Kumar initiated the
discussion and requested the board members to give their suggestion on how to attract more
students to the courses, how to place the students and how to augment the research work.
Mr.Manivannan, one of the Board members commended the efforts taken by the department
to promote the 5 yrs integrated MBA Programme. Mr.R.Bupathy, suggested that the 5yrs
integrated programme is to be nurtured as it is a promising avenue to generate revenue for the
University.
Mr.Sundaram suggested that the School should concentrate on Entrepreneurship
Development by initiating workshops and also sending students on internship with
Entrepreneurs
Mr.Varatharajan suggested that Dual degree with B.E and MBA or Twinning programme in
collaboration with Foreign Universities can be offered to improve student enrolment.
Mr.Bupathy highlighted that, with the kind of Global Business Environment prevailing at
present any course related to law will have lot of potential, the same view was endorsed by
Mr.Paranthaman and Mr.Sundaram
Another suggestion to popularize the MBA programme is to promote the programme through
social media. The students can also be made to submit their assignments through social
media.
The Advisory Board members recommended the faculty to use “COURSERA” resources in
order to enhance their teaching. Mr.Sundaram urged the need to map the specific requirement
of particular faculty and plan FDP according to it.
Mr.T.A.B.Bharathy insisted to have uniformity in the mentorship efforts taken by the
industry experts and to develop evaluation criteria for the students who have undergone
Mentorship. He also stressed the need for faculty to be one up the students and highlighted
that equipping faculty by increasing their interaction with industry is the first step to be taken.
Mr.Bupathy suggested that faculty can be subject to up gradation and evaluation by making
them to do book reviews and the rating of faculty should be done in a very rigorous manner.
Mr.Manivannan suggested building up a Faculty Development centre for VELS University
similar to the lines of Training & Development centre in companies. The work of such a
centre should be to assess the training needs of faculty on an individual basis and to cater to
them. The resources of “CRESTCOM” video lectures can also be used by faculty.
Mr.P.K.Mohandas questioned about the initiatives taken by the department to develop the
skills of the students. The discussions also focused on why students are not willing to take up
sales and marketing job. Students should be groomed to take up the challenges in sales and
marketing.
The board also suggested to have a mid - term review before the next meeting.

Departmental Achievements Grants Received
� Received a Grant Rs. 15,00,000 against Grant –in-Aid under Modernization and Removal of Obsolescence Scheme(MODROBS).
� School of Management Studies has received a grant of Rs.39,000 from NABARD to organise an MEDP for matured SHGs on Jewellery Making for 13 days. The Program was conducted from 21st August,2014 to 8th September ,2014.
Entrepreneurship Development
� 10 Students from I MBA General attended “ Awareness Programme on Opportunities available with NSIC & Bank for micro and Small Industries” on 28th Jan 2014. Venue – NSIC – STP Hall. Followed with the session the students had an Industrial Visit to NSIC
� ED cell of School of Management studies facilitated a skill development
programme for the mechanical students of Vels University on 18th February 2014. The programme was conducted on the topic “CAD using CATIA & Solid Works”. It was a 60 hour programme which is worth Rs. 16 lakhs and was funded through NSIC technical service centre, Government of India. This programme was absolutely free for the students. .
MDP Conducted for executives Two Day Executive Development Programme on After Sale Service A two day workshop on “Effective after sale service for competitive advantage” was organised on 20th and 21st February 2014. Participants, executives from different industries, organizations and colleges participated and benefitted in the workshop. Special lectures on after sale service, warranties and AMC were delivered by, Director, School of management studies, Vels University. Achievers Conclave – 20.03.2014 Achievers Conclave a forum of dynamic entrepreneurs was organized in order to motivate the students to become job providers. National Conference March 2014
School of Management Studies,Vels University.Pallavaram organized a two day
National Conference on Millennium Development Goals-Challenges and Future
sponsored by ICSSR on March 13th and 14th. The Programme started with
Welcome Address by Dr.S.Ramani.Director Consultant.School of Management
Studies.Vels University. Dr.R.Mathialagan, Registrar,Vels University delivered the
Special Address,followed by the Inaugural Address by Dr.Issac Jayanthi, Judge,
High Court, Chennai. Prof. Rathinaswamy Maria Saleth. Director of (MIDS)Chennai,
delivered the Key-Note Address. The programme continued with a Panel Discussion
on the topic Role of Corporate Social responsibility towards Millennium
Development Goals.The Panel members were Ms.S. Sundari Communication and
Program Officer at HCL Technologies Foundation,Dr.R.Anbalagan. Dean –School of
Distance education. MBA Department, SRM University. Chennai.
Mr.S.Thiagarajan,Chairman and Managing Director of Mudra Fine Blank, Dr.Asley
Spierer. Business Development Officer.AYZH and the session moderator was
Ms.Latha Rajan, Director, Mafoi Randst at India.
The next day started with the Panel discussion by eminent persons both from
academics and industry on the topic Contribution of Micro Finance towards
(MDG).130 papers were presented in the National Conference.The Valedictory
Address was delivered by Dr.D.S.Ramachandran Murthy,Vice-Chancellor St,Peters
University, Chennai.
Distinguished Alumni School of Management Studies, Vels University organised Alumni Meet “Echoes 2015” on 26.1.2015. The dignitaries present on the dais were Dr.E.Gopinath Vice Chancellor(i/c), Vels University, Director, School of Management Studies, Vels University. A special address was delivered by Director, School of Management Studies, Vels University. He mentioned the significance and how the Alumni can participate in the progress of the Department. The Felicitation was done by Dr. E.Gopinath Vice Chancellor(i/c), and expressed his ideas on how this Alumni Meet can be taken forward to the next level, including the Alumni of the entire Vels University.
A few of the many alumini who had come were from Karur Vysa,Bank., .Chennai. Assistant Manager, HSBC, Chennai. Marketing Executive, Karaikal Port, Financial Executives. Photron Pvt Ltd, Financial Analyst, etc. The Alumni were requested to share their memories and their wonderful experiences. A few of the alumini promised internships and placements in their respective organisations. The MBA Students cheered the Alumni with cultural performance and also conducted management games to entertain them. The II integrated MBA students organised a Business quiz for the alumni to explore their talents. The stage was rocked by the energetic performance of the MBA Students and finally the Alumni thanked the students for giving them such wonderful memories of Echoes 2015.
