SchoolofNursing

Establishedin1899asatwo-yearprogram,theSchoolofNursinggraduateditsfirstclassin1901andexpandedtoathree-yearprogramin1903.Intheearly1970stheprogramwasreducedto33months.In1988theprogramwasshortenedto26months.Atthepresenttime,theprogramisa5semester/67creditaccelerateddiplomainnursingprogramwhichtakes20monthstocomplete.

In2013,theSchoolrecognizedtheparadigmshifttoabaccalaureatedegreeinnursing.Tofacilitateaneaseoftransitionfordiplomagraduates,theSchoolandPennsylvaniaStateUniversity--Shenangoarecommittedtoprovidingthatprogramofstudy.Throughajointaffiliation,thetwoentitieshaveidentifiedacourseofstudytomaintainthetraditionofdiplomaeducationwiththeintegrationofaconceptual-basedapproachfornursingeducation,practice,andresearchthroughouttheireducation.GraduatesoftheSchoolofNursingareprofessionalnursespracticingnursinginawidevarietyofhealthcaresettings.

SharonRegional’sSchooloffersclassrooms,asimulationLab,lecturerooms,lounges,andfaculty/administrativeoffices.MorrisonHallseats100peopleandprovidesspaceforcommunitymeetings,specialhospitalandvolunteerfunctions,andhospitalsponsoredevents.ThefacultyoffersawealthoflearningforeachstudentthroughtheirformalBaccalaureateandMaster’seducationandtheirrichbackgroundsinclinicalexpertise.

SharonRegionalHealthSystemSchoolofNursingcurrentlyhasarticulationagreementswithSlipperyRock,YoungstownState,andPennStateuniversitiestosupportthetransitionofagraduateintotheprogramsleadingtotheBachelorofScienceinnursingdegree.

Admission(Classof2020)

TheClassof2020willbeginSemester#1oftheprograminAugustof2018(seecurriculumplan)andgraduateinMayof2020.Studentsarenolongerrequiredtocompletepre-requisitecoursesorsubmitlettersofreference.TheSchoolofNursingdoesaccepttransferofcreditsforsomeacademiccoursesonanindividualbasis.OfficialtranscriptsMUSTbesenttotheSchoolofNursingfortransferofcredittooccur(seepolicy#174includedinthecatalog).Transcriptsshouldbesentassoonasthestudentisprovisionallyaccepted.Forconsiderationofacceptanceintothisclass,thedeadlineforcompletingtheTEAStest(seeinformationbelow)andsubmittingthecompletedapplicationwiththe$50.00non-refundableapplicationfeewillbe3pmonMonday,February28,2017.Ahighschool,GEDorequivalenttranscriptisalsorequired.Studentssubmittingincompleteapplicationsmaynotbeconsideredforadmissionintotheprogram.Thefollowingisachecklistforacompletestudent’sadmissionfile:

Astudentmaychoosetowithdrawfromacourseforavarietyofreasons(academicissues,healthconcerns(selforfamily),financialstruggles,changeincareergoals,relocation,etc.).Studentsmayrepeatonenursingcoursewithinthecurriculum.ThestudentrequestingwithdrawalwillmeetwiththeDirectorandcompletetheWithdrawalForm.ThestudentmustalsomeetwiththeFinancialAidofficerandreturnallborrowedmaterialstotheSchoolofNursing.ForFinancialAidpurposes,thestudentwillbeconsideredwithdrawnfromtheprogram.ATitleIVwithdrawalcalculationwillbecompletedandtheremaybemoniestobereturnedtotheTitleIVsource.PennStatewillalsobenotifiedofthestudent’schangeinstatus.

environmentfreefromallformsofharassment/bullyingofanystudent,potentialstudentorSchoolofNursingpersonnel.Harassment/bullyingviolatetheSchoolofNursingpolicyandisneitherpermittednorcondoned.

Harassment/bullyingisdefinedasapatternofconduct,rootedinapowerdifferentialthatthreatens,harms,humiliates,inducesfear,orcausessubstantialemotionaldistress.Includedarebehaviorsthatanyreasonablepersonwouldrecognizeashavingasignificantriskinharmingstudents,potentialstudentsorSchoolofNursingpersonnel.

Astudentmaychoosetotakealeaveofabsence(LOA)fromthenursingprogramwhenthestudentisexperiencingasignificantpersonalproblemthatisinterferingwiththeirabilitytoremainintheprogramatthattime.Asignificantpersonalproblemmayincludeahealthissue(selforfamily),highlevelofstressduetopersonalissues,financialissues,emotional/psychologicalconcernsoracalltomilitaryduty.Mostoftenaleaveofabsencestudentintendstoreturntotheprogram.Theleaveofabsenceappliestoallnursingcoursesbeingtakenatthetimeoftheleaveandisonlyavailabletostudentswhoareingoodacademicstanding.“Goodacademicstanding”isdefinedbytheprogramasatheorygradeabove79.5%inallcurrentnursingcoursesandsatisfactoryperformanceintheclinicalsetting.

Whenastudentwouldliketotakealeaveofabsence,thestudentwillsubmitawrittenortypedstatementtothedirectorrequestingtheleave.Itisrequestedthatthestudentlistthereasonfortheleaveinthestatementbutitisnotrequired.Thedirectorwilldetermineifthestudentisingoodacademicstanding.Thestudentwillthenmeetwiththedirectortocompletetheleaveofabsenceform.Aftertheformiscompletedandsignedbythestudentandthedirector,PennStateisnotifiedthatthestudenthastakenaleaveofabsencefromtheprogram.Thefinancialaidofficer(FAO)willnotifythestudent’slenderofthechangeofstatus.

PurposeofthePolicy:StudentswhohaveearnedprovisionalacceptanceintotheSchoolofNursingprogrammayhavealreadycompletedsomeofthecollegecourses(Math,English,Anatomy,Psychology,FreshmanSeminar,Physiology,Microbiology,NutritionandHumanGrowth/Development)includedwithintheprogram’s5semestercurriculum.InordertorequestthattheSchoolofNursingacceptpreviouscollegecredits,anofficialtranscriptofthecollegecourseswillberequired.Pre-requisitecoursesarenotrequiredandtheprogramdoesnotoffer“advancedstanding”.

Studentsrequestingtransferofnursingcourses(Fundamentals,PharmacologyandMSI)willbeaddressedusingtheStudentTransferPolicy#115.

Policy:

1.Allcoursesbeingacceptedfortransferwillbereviewedbytheprogram’sAdmissionCommitteeduringtheprovisionalacceptanceperiod(March-December).AnofficialtranscriptisrequiredbyJuly1st.An“unofficial”transcriptwillbeacceptedforstudentstakingclassesinthesummerandfallsemestersforfinalacceptanceintosemester#2.Aminimumgradeof“C”isrequiredforallcreditsbeingtransferredintotheprogram.Pleasenotethataprovisionalacceptancestudentmayneedtoretakeasemester#1coursetoincreasehisorherGPAtoatleast2.75aspartofthecriteriaforfinalacceptance.
