“a not-for-profit, non-sectarian social service agency that provides millions of hours of service to more than 3,000 children, families and developmentally disabled consumers each year. Daily, we provide care to over 1,500 children and their families and services to more than 80 developmentally disabled/mentally retarded individuals.”

The standard general education classroom in the Bronx

Special education classroom

The special education classroom may very in identity. It can contain 12:1 (12 students and one teacher) or it can be inclusive containing general education students and students with disabilities. These special education classroom are located within a general education school.

The Resource room

“Resource rooms are classrooms (sometimes smaller classrooms) where a special education program can be delivered to a student with a disability. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day.”

Self-contained classrooms

A class that is self-contained is usually a class the does not travel with the general student population. Its core curriculum classes are taught in one main classroom which is also the homeroom. These special education self-contained classrooms are located within a general education school.

Special Education District 75

“District 75 provides citywide educational, vocational, and behavior support programs for students who are on the autism spectrum, severely emotionally challenged, and/or multiply disabled. District 75 consists of 56 school organizations, home and hospital instruction, and vision and hearing services. Our schools and programs are located at more than 350 sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Syosset, New York.”  Main Slide

Department of Juvenile Justice

Passages Academy

•Youth who are remanded to detention are required to attend school. The New York City Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) believes that education is essential to helping young people lead productive lives. School begins shortly after a youth is placed in the Department's care. 

•Students attend one of four sites at the Academy, depending on whether or not they are placed in Secure or Non-Secure Detention (NSD). A fully-staffed school is located within each of DJJ's three Secure Detention facilities. A separate site is maintained by the Department of Education for students in Non-Secure Detention.  Main slide

Home School

Home school is a perfectly legal means of a parent educating their children. NYC curriculum maps and resources are available on line.
