SCHOOL RULES AND REGULATIONS

Students of Wesley Methodist School are to co-operate with the School Staff, Prefects and class monitors in maintaining, at all times, an atmosphere conducive to acquiring knowledge and imbibing the moral standards and code of conduct and behaviour required by the school. All students are subject to all school rules and disciplinary action meted out by the school.

GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT

1.1. Bahasa Malaysia or English is to be spoken as the language of communication at all times in the school. Students are required to bring the BBC Knowledge on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the Dewan Siswa on other days.

1.2. Examinations and tests are an integral part of the school academic programme.

1.2.1. All students are expected to be present for all such tests without exception (refer to the

section on school examinations) 1.2.2. All attempts at dishonesty or to copy during tests and examinations will be viewed very

seriously, and the culprits will face disciplinary action.

1.3. Inattentiveness and lack of seriousness towards academic work and boisterous and disruptive behaviour on the part of students within and outside the class will warrant stern disciplinary action.

1.4. The use of foul and unacceptable language, vulgarity and obscenity, and the expressing of

immoral thoughts through foul/vulgar signs and actions will warrant serious disciplinary action.

1.5. All forms of gambling and ‘games of chance’, and the promotion and sale of any form of

lottery is strictly prohibited, and an infringement of this rule will invite severe disciplinary action. [See also 1.18(xii)] No game cards of any type are allowed to be brought into school.

1.6. The possession and/or circulation within the school of prohibited literature, publications, and pornographic material will warrant serious disciplinary action.

1.7. All other items and articles deemed to be unrelated to students’ daily school academic work,

including audiovisual equipment, electronic appliances, devices and accessories, periodicals, ipads, tablets, laptop, notebooks, cameras and all reading materials which are not obtained from the library will be confiscated by the school, unless special written permission has been granted by the Principal. The school is not liable should a phone or other electronic devices be damaged or misplaced. If any CD/DVD or musical instruments are brought in for a school event, it must be surrendered to the homeroom teacher. Disciplinary action will be taken if the above mentioned items are found to be in the student’s possession.

1.8. It is the right and responsibility of the school to, at any time conduct a search of a student’s

desk, locker or personal belongings, if there is reasonable cause for such a search.

1.9. Handphones may be brought into the school. All hand phones must be labeled with the student’s name and class and surrendered as per system laid down by the school. However, if the hand phone is not labeled, it will be retained until the hand phone can be verified by the homeroom teacher.

1.9.1. Any handphone found in the possession of a student after 7.30 am will be

confiscated. The penalty will be as follows:- 1.9.2. First offence : phone and sim card will be kept by the office for at least a month.

1.9.3. Second offence : phone and sim card will be kept by the office for at least three

months. 1.9.4. Third offence : phone and sim card will be kept by the office until the end of the

academic year. If the phone is confiscated at the end of the year, then the confiscated phone will be kept in the office for at least one month.

A penalty of RM100 will be imposed if a handphone is confiscated irrespective of whether the student wants the phone back or not. The confiscated handphone will be returned to the student concerned as per conditions stated above upon the Principal receiving a written request from the student’s parent.

1.10. LOCKERS

1.10.1. It is compulsory for ALL students to have a locker. Lockers will be provided free of

charge. However, a fine of RM100.00 will be imposed for any damage to the locker. If the culprit does not own up, the whole class will be imposed the fine.

1.10.2. Every student will need to provide his/her own padlock.

1.10.3. Spot-checks on lockers for prohibited items could be carried out from time to time. 1.10.4. Students can only access their lockers before and after school hours, during

homeroom period and immediately after recess & lunch.

1.11. Students are strictly prohibited from indulging in all forms of buying and selling, business transactions and private trading in the school. [Buyers and sellers will equally face disciplinary action]

1.12. Theft of personal belongings and private property of others will be viewed seriously

by the school [See 1.18.9]

1.13. Vandalism and wilful destruction and damage or defacement of any form to school and private property will warrant severe disciplinary action; the culprit(s) will pay a fine amounting to a minimum of RM 50.00 per item. If the cost of repair is higher, the culprit ( s ) will have to bear the total cost of repairs. [See also 1.18.7 – 1.18.8]

1.14. Students, who individually or in groups intentionally bully or make a fellow student feel left out, threaten, harm or inflict pain on other persons or to the property of others within or without school will face disciplinary action or even expulsion. This clause applies to and includes those who abet such options. [See also 1.18.1 – 18.1.4; 18.1.6, 1.18.8, 1.18.10, 1.18.16]

1.15. Smoking and the consumption of alcohol and drugs by students within and without

the school will be dealt with severely by the school. [See also 1.18.11, 1.18.13]

1.16. The possession of all types of offensive weapons and sharp objects/ornaments by students within and without school is totally prohibited.

1.17. The possession and use of all forms of explosive materials including fireworks is strictly

prohibited

1.18. The following offences under Surat Pekeliling Ikhtisas Bil 9/1975 ‘Perkara perkara Tatatertib Yang Dianggap Berat’, Ref: K.P. 8543/Vol.2 (55) Lampiran B are deemed as anti-social behaviour, and will invite serious action by the School:

1.18.1. Menjadi ahli dalam pertubuhan haram

1.18.2. Membawa senjata yang merbahaya dengan tujuan jahat

1.18.3. Memukul guru-guru

1.18.4. Mengancam guru-guru atau Guru Besar atau Pengetua

1.18.5. Melanggar peraturan-peraturan dan undang-undang yang ditubuhkan oleh

sekolah dan Jabatan pelajaran

1.18.6. Menulis kepada suratkhabar tanpa memberitahu pihak yang berkuasa sekolah

1.18.7. Sengaja merosakkan harta kerajaan/sekolah

1.18.8. Sengaja merosakkan harta persendirian guru-guru atau murid-murid

1.18.9. Mencuri

1.18.10. Mengancam murid-murid lain ancaman yang serius dan merbahaya

1.18.11. Menghisap rokok dan mengambil dadah

1.18.13. Meminum minuman keras atau yang memabukkan dalam kawasan sekolah

1.18.14. Masih membantah hukuman guru sekalipun sudah tiga atau empat amaran

1.18.15. Menunjukkan sifat bongkak dan membuat penghinaan kepada guru, Guru

Besar atau Pengetua

1.18.16. Sengaja menimbulkan sesuatu perkara yang sensitif dengan tujuan

menimbulkan kacau bilau dan perpecahan kaum

1.18.17. Melanggar peraturan-peraturan tatatertib atau menangkis yang menurut budi

bicara Guru Besar atau Pengetua sebagai pelanggaran tatatertib yang berat

1.19. All letters requesting that a student be allowed to leave the school early (during

school hours) must be written by the parent and, sent to the Principal in writing at

least one day in advance. The ‘permission to leave school early’ slip should be signed

by the Principal.

2. SCHOOL UNIFORM

2.1. The prescribed school uniform is to be worn by all students of the school at all times when they are in the school compound during normal school days, or otherwise, and during all official school activities and functions within and without the school, unless otherwise specified.

2.2. The school uniform is to be made of the prescribed School material and colour scheme; the design/pattern of tailoring must meet the specifications laid down by the School.

2.3. Sleeves of long-sleeved shirts/blouses must be rolled down at all times for students following

the KBSM Curriculum.

2.4. The prescribed personal name-tag must be pinned on for every shirt/blouse that is worn to school and must be visible. The loss of a name tag must be immediately reported to the Homeroom teacher, accompanied by an order for the appropriate replacement. A temporary name tag must be obtained immediately from the Prefects.

2.5. On Mondays and special school occasions and when representing the school, students are

required to wear the prescribed school neck-tie. 2.5.1. The tie is to be knotted up properly and the collar buttoned up to ensure a smart

appearance throughout the day.

2.5.2. Students who fail to wear the school neck-tie on Mondays or special occasions will be required to purchase a new tie each time of offence.

2.6. Cardigans 2.6.1. Only black, brown or beige cardigans are allowed to be worn to school.

2.7. Footwear

The prescribed footwear for all students is only plain white rubber/canvas shoes. Shoes must be plain white with no coloured stripes. Branded shoes and loafers are not allowed.

2.7.1. Only WMS/WMSKL (International) socks are permitted for all students. Socks should

not be rolled down but must be worn above the ankles at all times. Short socks which do not cover the ankles are not permitted. School socks are available in the School Bookshop.

2.7.2. Students will be asked to purchase new socks each time they are caught not following this rule.

2.8. Physical Education / Athletics / Games Practices / Post Exam activities /School excursions / etc

2.8.1. The permitted outfit / attire is the prescribed school house-colour T-shirt and black school games shorts available in the school Book Shop. Dark blue or black track bottoms are also allowed.

2.8.2. School shorts are not to be folded at the waist.

2.8.3. All other kinds of T-shirts (including special event T-shirts and Club and Societies T-shirts) and shorts are strictly prohibited. Leggings, tights, and tennis skirts are also not permitted.

2.8.4. Students are not allowed to play games/sports in school uniform. If found to do so, their sports equipment will be confiscated. This also applies to students who play after school hours.

2.8.5. Students who cannot take part in PE /games due to health problems must produce a

doctor’s letter and permission to be exempted must be obtained from the Principal. This rule applies during and after school hours.

2.9. Girls’ Attire

2.9.1. The skirts of female students should be just below the knee.

Further guidelines on girls’ attire will be given in a separate handout.

2.10. Boys’ Attire 2.10.1. Boys are not allowed to wear their trousers too low on their hips and the shirts must

be well tucked in, such that the waistband and belt are clearly visible.

2.10.2. Only black waist-belts which are of plain and simple design may be worn; all fashionable/fanciful/decorative/colourful/ branded belts, and those with unduly

heavy metal buckles are prohibited.

2.11. Prefects’ Attire: Prefects are expected to adhere to the prescribed attire of the school Prefectorial Board.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE

3. General (For all students) 3.1. All students must be well-groomed, tidy and presentable in their personal appearance.

3.1.1. Finger-nails should be kept short. The distal edge of the nails (white part of nails

extending beyond the flesh) is to be less than a millimeter in length.

3.1.1.1. Students are not allowed to have their nails polished

3.1.1.2. Students who play musical instruments which require slightly longer nails are to obtain permission from the Principal by submitting a letter from their parents.

3.1.2. No student is allowed to wear any amulets, religious ornaments, strings (for religious

reasons) or sports accessories to the school. Only kara bangles worn by Sikhs are allowed.

3.1.3. Fanciful hair styling and tinting of hair is NOT allowed for any student. 3.1.4. Spectacles rims and frames should be plain, gold, silver or black only. Fancy spectacle

rims are prohibited. Transition/Photochromic lenses are not allowed. 3.1.5. Henna (Inai), tattoos or any form of skin art is strictly prohibited.

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ HAIR LENGTH

3.2. Boys’ Appearance

Boys are to have well-trimmed hair, and must conform with current Ministry of Education guidelines-Ref: K.P. (BS) 8543/Vol.II/(58), Surat Pekeliling Ikhtisas No.2/1976. (Prior written requests must come from parents for variation on religious grounds, and these must be forwarded to the Principal for appropriate clearance).

3.2.1. Boys’ Hair - Boys must have short hair, cut, so that when pulled down, the length does

not extend over the eyebrows in the front, the ears at the sides, or the shirt collar at the back. The use of hair gel is prohibited.

3.2.1.1. Fancy haircuts are strictly prohibited.

3.2.2. Beards, moustaches and unkempt facial hair will not be allowed. Sideburns should not come below the mid-length of the ear.

3.2.3. Boys are not allowed to wear any form of jewellery including ear studs.

3.3. Girls’ Appearance

3.3.1. Girls must keep their hair neat and away from the forehead; strands of loose hair must

be clipped up. Fringes should be clipped back away from the forehead.

3.3.2. Long hair should be neatly tied up or braided.

3.3.3. Fancy/decorative and fashionable hair accessories are not permitted.

3.3.4. Only black ribbons, black hair bands and black clips are allowed.

3.3.5. The use of cosmetics, coloured lip gloss and coloured balm, coloured contact lens and the wearing of jewellery in school is strictly prohibited.

3.3.6. Girls are not allowed multiple piercing of their ear lobes. They are allowed to only wear a pair of simple gold / silver /white / black ear studs which are less than 5 millimeters in diameter on their ear lobes (and not any other part of the ear).

4. ATTENDANCE/ PUNCTUALITY 4.1. Students must be present and punctual in the school on all school days, and at all school

functions and activities unless prior written requests for exemption/variation from parents have been approved by the Principal.

4.1.1. Latecomers to school (those who arrive in school after 7.30 a.m) are required to obtain a late pass from the school office duly signed by the Principal. The pass must be produced to the teacher in the class at that time and to the Homeroom teacher before latecomers can be permitted to join the class or activity concerned. Late passes duly signed by the teachers concerned must be submitted to the school office on the same day for filing.

4.2. Any student who comes into school later than 8.30 a.m has to produce a letter of explanation from parents / guardian.

4.3. Absentees from school or its organized activities must either produce a medical certificate or a letter duly signed by the parents/guardian. This must be forwarded by the absentee to the Homeroom teacher for the Principal’s attention on the next day upon return to school after his/her period of absence.

4.4. Students who are absent for more than 5 days in a month without notice to the Principal or

any valid reason will be removed from the School Admission Book.

4.5. Students are not permitted to leave the school premises or its organized activities after having reported/come into the school premises before the scheduled time of dismissal unless a valid Permission to Leave School Slip has been obtained from the Principal. [Written requests from parents for students to be allowed to report late for school or to return home early must be forwarded to the Principal first thing in the morning for administrative action].

4.6. A student wishing to seek leave of absence from the school for pre-determined reasons (e.g.

music exams, driving tests, , medical appointments) is required to bring a letter from his/her parent/guardian, well in advance, before the actual day, for the consideration of the school administration. Although the administration recognizes that some personal appointments of students must be scheduled during school hours, we ask that these appointments be kept to the minimum so as not to interfere with student’s classes.

4.7. Students are not allowed to go on family / private holidays during school term especially when school examinations are on. If this rule is violated, they will not be given any preferential treatment in terms of extra coaching by teachers or assistance in catching up with their work or sitting for a missed exam. A missed day is never truly made up.

4.8. Loitering in public places [including patronizing food outlets/stalls] after having come into

the school premises and after school dismissal each day while still in school uniform is forbidden.

4.9. Truancy and unwarranted absence from school will invite serious disciplinary action.

5. ASSEMBLY 5.1. All students are expected to be present at all school assemblies, unless prior written

permission has been obtained from the Principal. If assembly is cancelled due to rain/haze/wet grounds, all students are to be in their homeroom and not loiter around anywhere else in school or in other classrooms.

5.2. Respectful silence and order must be maintained during assemblies and formal gatherings. Any disruption of an assembly or a gathering by any student will invite serious disciplinary action by the school

5.3. Students are required to sing the National Anthem, the Wesley Anthem and recite the

‘Rukunegara’ at Assemblies on Mondays and at other official school functions.

5.4. At the first bell each morning, and at the end of morning recess/examination break, and at the end of lunch break, students will line up in the recommended order, and are to maintain absolute silence during the Assembly. When Assembly ends, they will move silently and in an orderly manner to class under the supervision of the respective teachers-in-charge. (Students must heed the instructions of Duty Teachers and Prefects on duty).

6. MOVEMENT

6.1. All entry into and departure from the school is through the school Main Entrance and the

Back Entrance [front – Jalan Lima] only. For security reasons, those who are late or seek permission to leave early are required to use the main entrance.

6.1.1. All students are to be in school by 7.30 a.m , after which the school gates will be closed.

6.1.2. If a student had obtained permission to leave early (refer 4.5), the Permission to Leave Slip has to be handed over to the security guards at the main gate.

6.2. Movement of students between classes, to laboratories/hall, workshop and set teaching

rooms, and when moving down for recess/lunch must be orderly and under the supervision of the subject teacher-in-charge. Students are not to break ranks or disrupt the order of movement at such times. Students should be punctual at these various rooms for their lessons/activities.

6.3. A Leave Pass must be obtained from the teacher in the class if a student needs to leave the class during a lesson for a valid reason. This Leave Pass must be worn around the neck such that it can be seen. Students without leave passes will be dealt with seriously.

6.4. During school hours, and during the change of teaching periods, students may not leave the

room they are in without the permission of the teacher concerned. [The class monitor will maintain a register of such requests granted each time signed by the teacher concerned].

6.5. Students must not be found in the classrooms, other teaching-learning rooms, hall, along the

corridors and stairways, and such other places that may be included from time to time, unless under the supervision of a member of the staff. Loitering will be viewed seriously.

6.6. Students are not allowed into the Staffrooms at any time.

6.7. Every morning before assembly, students should leave their school bags in their respective

classrooms and proceed immediately to the assembly grounds. Students should not be found sleeping in the classrooms or loitering in the corridors.

6.8. Outdoor activities will not be permitted during thunderstorms and inclement weather and

when not supervised by a teacher.

7. CANTEEN 7.1. Students are not permitted in the canteen except during the authorized morning and lunch

breaks. Students are expected to queue up to buy their food.

7.2. Students are not to be found in the canteen during teaching-learning periods and during the change of periods (including PE and Games), and at any other unauthorized times.

7.3. Students are expected to cultivate good table manners and hygienic habits and exercise care

and consideration for others at all times when in the canteen.

7.4. Students MUST place all drinking and food utensils they have used in the designated collection points in the mess area of the canteen.

7.5. Students are to clear the tables promptly so that other students may have their turn at the

tables.

7.6. Food and drinks must not be taken out of the canteen.

7.7. In the interest of hygiene, foodstuff purchased from public food outlets must not be brought into the school canteen.

7.8. The canteen can be used by students for private gatherings/celebrations provided prior

written permission has been obtained from the Principal and there is a staff member present.

7.9. Students are forbidden to buy food from hawkers after school hours for health reasons.

7.10. Food, eg sandwiches, buns, biscuits, pizza, pie, cakes can be brought from home. Fruits and salad are also allowed. No other cooked food is allowed to be brought to school.

7.11. Pork and beef are strictly forbidden.

7.12. If a student is on special diet due to medical reasons, a letter has to be obtained from

a registered medical practitioner and written permission has to be obtained from the Principal to enable the student to bring in special food from home.

7.13. All food waste should be separated and thrown in the specific bins provided for

recycling purposes.

7.14. Students are not allowed to scream, shout or run/dash around in the canteen.

7.15. Food fights are not allowed.

8. LIBRARY RULES

Library Times : 8.00am – 4.15pm Mondays – Fridays

8.1. Membership 8.1.1. All teachers and students of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International)

are members of the school library. They may use the library for reference, silent study and borrowing books.

8.1.2. Doing homework in the library is not allowed.

8.2. Borrowing of books

8.2.1. Library cards/smart cards must be used in order to borrow books. If the card is damaged or lost, the student concerned has to pay RM 10.00 for a replacement smart card.

8.2.2. Library cards are not transferable.

8.2.3. Fiction and reference books ( Redspot ) may be borrowed for a week.

8.2.4. Reference books may not be borrowed out of the library.

8.2.5. It is considered an offence if books, magazines or any reading materials are taken out of the library without signing for them first.

8.3. Fines

8.3.1. Students who return books late will be suspended from borrowing. The penalty will be

one day fine for each day the book is returned late. Students who commit this offence will be fined 50 cents per day.

8.3.2. Students have to pay for books which are lost or damaged.

8.4. Mode of Behaviour

8.4.1. Order and discipline must be maintained at all times.

8.4.2. No unnecessary movement, discussion, whispering, eating, drinking and littering or unbecoming behaviour will be allowed. Students must maintain SILENCE in the library.

8.4.3. No bags may be taken into the library. They should be placed neatly outside the library. 8.4.4. Students who are not in uniform or are not properly attired are not allowed to enter the

library. Students are not allowed to enter the library in T-shirts and shorts or slippers.

8.4.5. Chairs are to be arranged neatly and quietly before leaving the library. Do not leave anything behind. The librarian will not be responsible for any personal belongings that are lost.

8.4.6. Those who borrow books must ensure that the books are handled carefully.

8.4.7. Students are allowed to use the computers during recess, lunch break and after school

hours ONLY. Computers may be used for research purposes only. Computers may not be used for computer games, e-mail etc. Students must ask permission from library teachers/library staff and sign in the exercise book provided before they proceed to use the computers.

8.4.8. The content of all thumbdrives must be scanned and verified by the library staff before use.

8.4.9. Before leaving the library, please show the librarians at the door all that you have to

take out of the library.

8.5. Suspension

8.5.1. Students who misuse the library and continue to break the library rules or make noise in the library after three warnings by the library staff/student librarians on duty, will be suspended from using the library for two weeks or be sent for Detention Class.

9. COMPUTER LABORATORY RULES

9.1. All students using the Science Laboratory are strictly required to adhere to the stipulated

computer lab rules as displayed in the laboratory.

9.2 Students may not enter or work in the laboratory unless the computer teacher-in-charge is present.

9.3 Students are prohibited from changing “computer setting” of any kind; even screen savers, mouse and keyboard controls or going into “system setup.

9.4 Any access to indecent sites is a punishable offence. Offenders will be severely dealt with by the school.

9.5 NO downloading is allowed without prior permission from the teacher-in-charge.

9.6 Students are NOT allowed to install any software onto the computer system. By doing so, you are breaking the copyright law. The school takes a serious view of any such misdemeanor.

9.7 Students are not allowed to bring any storage devices e.g. thumbdrives, compact disc (CD’s) or hard disc into the laboratory.

9.8 There should be minimal movement in the laboratory. Silence must be observed at all times.

9.9 NO eating or drinking is allowed in the laboratory.

9.10 Only books related to the computer lessons are permitted in the computer laboratory. All other books and bags are to be left in your respective classrooms.

9.11 Students must be punctual for their lessons. Latecomers will not be admitted into the

computer laboratory unless they produce a letter from the Principal.

9.12 As soon as a student is seated at the computer assigned to him/her, he/she MUST report any damage or irregularity noticed, to the teacher-in-charge. If a computer assigned to a student is found to be damaged/faulty after he/she has used it, then the student will be held responsible for the damage/fault, and bear the cost of repair or replacement.

10. SCIENCE LABORATORY RULES 10.1 Do not enter the Laboratory unless a teacher is present.

10.2 Do not remove or take out any chemicals or apparatus from the Laboratory without

your Science teacher’s permission.

10.3 Do not carry out any activity in the Science Laboratory without your teacher’s permission. Students using the Laboratory for their club or society activities or their homeroom should not tamper with the arrangement of apparatus in the laboratory.

10.4 Students using the Science Laboratory should not tamper with the apparatus in the

laboratory.

10.5 All students using the Science Labs are strictly required to adhere stipulated rules as displayed in the science lab.

10.6 Report any breakage and malfunction of equipment to your teacher immediately.

10.7 Do not touch chemicals with your bare hands. Use a spatula or spoon.

10.8 Always read the label on a reagent bottle before using it.

10.9 Do not taste or smell any chemical without informing your teacher.

10.10 Always light a Bunsen Burner with a wooden splinter, matchstick or lighter only.

Extinguish the splinter or the match stick before you throw it into the dustbin.

10.11 Do not bring any food into the laboratory. Eating and drinking in the laboratory is strictly prohibited.

10.12 If you accidentally swallow any chemical, spit it out at once and wash your mouth

with plenty of water.

10.13 If any acid or alkali gets onto your skin or clothing, wash the affected area with plenty of water immediately.

10.14 Report all accidents to your teacher immediately.

10.15 If there is a fire, follow the school rules and guidelines on Fire Drill

10.16 Do not throw any solid substances into the sink.

10.17 Wash and clean all apparatus after use.

10.18 Wipe your table and return all apparatus to its original place after an experiment and

leave the laboratory clean and tidy.

10.19 Do not waste materials. Remember to turn off the taps and switch off the power points before you leave the laboratory.

10.20 Do not write or draw on the table tops.

10.21 All bags and water bottles are to be left outside the Laboratory

10 CLASSROOM RULES 11.1 The classroom (inclusive of all special rooms) is a place of study and it is the

responsibility of every student to ensure that due care is given to the furniture and fittings in the room. It is also the responsibility of every student to report to the Homeroom teacher any unusual occurrences/damage to his/her Home Room.

11.2 Students are to sit according to the seating plan assigned groups by teachers.

11.3 Students must collectively ensure that tables, chairs and other furniture are always properly arranged and that rooms are clean and tidy at all times. At dismissal, chairs must be placed on the respective tables. The class will be fined if this is not complied with.

11.4 Students are expected to assist in class duties as per the Duty Roster drawn up on the

advice of the Homeroom/Subject Teacher for the overall cleanliness and arrangement of the classroom.

11.5 Students must act immediately to rid the classroom and its vicinity of any litter and a

wastepaper basket must be used for its disposal. Cleanliness is the collective responsibility of all students of the class.

11.6 The consumption of food and drink in class, and the chewing of gum in school is

prohibited.

11.7 Water bottles are to be placed at the back of the classroom. No drinking water is allowed in the classroom. Students who wish to drink are to seek permission from the teacher and step out of the room to drink.

11.8 The use of liquid paper/correction tape/ is prohibited in the school.

11.9 Unauthorized use of the chalkboard/whiteboard/smart board and LCD projector is

strictly prohibited.

11.10 Desks, chairs, walls and notice/bulletin boards must be free of scribbling/graffiti.

11.11 Students are discouraged from bringing large sums of money and valuables to the school and if they do, they do so at their own risk. (A maximum of RM 20/- is suggested) Students who need to bring a large sum of money to pay for something (eg. books, camps, school outings etc), are encouraged to hand over the money to their Homeroom teachers for safe keeping.

11.12 Students are not to leave behind their wallets/purses, money and valuables in their

desks/bags during the times they are away from their classrooms including recess and lunch breaks.

11.12.1 The school will not be held responsible for any loss.

11.13 When leaving their classroom, students must ensure that all lights, fans and air-

conditioners are switched off. Doors must be left open. The class will be fined for non-compliance.

11.14 All books and personal belongings are not to be left in the students’ desks after

school. These items will be confiscated and a fine will be charged for the return of the items.

11.15 Students are not to bring any sports equipment into the classroom. If they need to

bring them for games, they are to be surrended to the Homeroom teachers / Form Supervisor during Homeroom period.

11.16 If students play with any of the sports equipment in or outside the classroom and

destroy school property, strict disciplinary action will be taken. (Refer to 1.13)

11.17 Students are to fill in all particulars and homework assigned etc in the school diary. Parents are encouraged to communicate with teachers concerned through the school diary if they have any concerns about their child’s performance.

12 DISCIPLINARY ACTION The person or persons committing the following acts will be subject to disciplinary action ranging from warnings and detention class to, but not limited to, suspension or expulsion. (Rule 1.14)

12.1 Cyber-bullying 12.1.1 Cyber—bullying is bullying through the use of any electronic communication, which

shall include, but shall not be limited to, any transfer of signs, signals, writings, images, sound, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic, photo electric or photo optical system, including but not limited to electronic mail, internet communication or facsimile communications.

12.1.2 Cyber-bullying shall also include the creation of a web page or blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or the knowing impersonation of another person as the author of posted content or messages.

12.2 Bullying and cyber-bullying are intolerable.

12.3 In addition, there will be no tolerance of any of the following behaviour:

12.3.1 Speaking to and/or answering a teacher/adult in a disrespectful manner.

12.3.2 Verbal harassment of peers

12.3.3 Physical violence or harassment

12.3.4 Playing rough in the school grounds. Students need to keep their hands and feet to

themselves at all times.

12.3.5 Disrespect (which includes but is not limited to: swearing, defacing school property)

12.3.6 Cheating/plagiarism

12.3.7 Bringing any type of weapon to school

12.3.8 Vandalism or graffiti

12.3.9 Internet abuse

12.4 Repeated infringement of school rules wholly or in part, may require students to attend Detention Class at times to be determined by, and at the discretion of, the Principal. Repeated attendance at Detention Classes will warrant further disciplinary action.

12.5 For students with serious disciplinary problems, their parents/guardians may be asked to come to the school to confer with the Principal.

12.6 Forgery of signatures of parents/guardians and lawful authorities will invite severe

disciplinary action.

12.7 The school reserves the right to suspend a student from class or school or terminate his/her enrolment for persistent disregard of School rules.

12.8 Students, who individually or collectively with others bring disrepute to the school

by their words, deeds or actions within and without the school will face immediate expulsion. This includes the behaviour of any boy or girl who is found to be too familiar with a member of the opposite sex (touching, holding hands, hugging, kissing etc). Similar unbecoming behaviour between students of the same gender also warrants serious disciplinary action.

12.9 students who are found in any of the rooms without a teacher being present will be

called up for disciplinary action.

12.10 The school, after informing the parents/guardians, has the absolute discretion to retain or terminate the enrolment of any student in the best interest of the child and the school.

13 DETENTION CLASS 13.1 Detention Class will be held on a Saturday from 8.00 a.m. Until 12.00 noon.

13.2 Students will be sent for Detention Class for the following reasons:

13.2.1 Coming late to school 3 times per month.

13.2.2 Not completing assignments on time consistently.

13.2.3 Infringement of school rules

13.2.4 Skipping classes

13.2.5 At the discretion of the Principal.

13.3 Students coming for Detention Class will be required to do the following:

13.3.1 Complete assignments.

13.3.2 Do additional assignments

13.3.3 Perform community service in school

14 SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS

14.1 The dates for the school exams will be listed in the school calendar as shown in the

school diary.

14.1.1 Students in Year 9, Year 11, Forms 3 and 5 will sit for their Trial Examinations at appropriate dates fixed by the school.

14.1.2 All exams are held in line with rules & regulations provided by the Ministry of Education and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and will be based on the syllabuses provided by the Ministry of Education and Cambridge International (CIE).

14.2 Subject Test 14.2.1 This will be decided by the Heads of Department / Subject teacher. Students will be

tested on current topics taught in the various subjects.

14.3 Parent-Teacher Conference 14.3.1 First Term: Parents of weaker students will be invited to meet the various subject

teachers in the first semester.

14.3.2 Mid-Year Exam: All parents are required to attend this important “Parent Teacher Conference”.

14.3.3 On these days, parents are given the opportunity to meet the teachers to discuss

matters related to their child’s progress.

14.4 Comment Sheets : Term Exams 14.4.1 Comments will be written for every exam subject. The subject teacher will comment

on each child’s progress in that particular subject.

14.4.2 All parents will have access to E– Report Cards. These will enlighten parents on the child’s performance in the term exams.

14.5 Examination Time Table - Exam Time Tables are normally distributed well ahead of

exams. This is to give ample time for the students to prepare for the exams. This will also encourage parents to be vigilant.

14.6 Examination Rules 14.6.1 All school examinations are held in accordance with guidelines provided by the

Ministry of Education and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

14.6.2 Students are expected to abide by these rules

14.6.3 Students who are late for school examinations may be allowed entry into the Examination Hall/Classes but no extra time will be given to these students.

14.6.4 If a student is caught cheating or copying in an exam, disciplinary action will be taken and a mark of ‘0’ will be recorded for the subject concerned.

14.6.5 Correction tape, liquid paper and gel pens are forbidden.

14.7 Entrance Exams

14.7.1 Students wishing to enter Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 for the following year will sit for the Entrance Exam in the current year.

15 GENERAL 15.1 Students are expected to develop an aptitude to study, and to cultivate good study

habits for their personal and individual development, and to excel academically.

15.2 Students are expected to meet deadlines for the completion of all academic assignments determined by the school. (Details of academic assignments and deadlines must be shown clearly in the student’s school diary). Students who consistently fail to complete assignments on time may be required to attend Detention Class.

15.3 A redistribution exercise of students between classes will be carried out for all

Years/Forms at the end of each year. This is necessary to improve the quality of teaching and learning, character development and to create better interaction amongst all the students in each form. No appeal on this exercise will be entertained.

15.4 A student who does not perform satisfactorily in the various tests and examinations

during the year may be required to remain in the same Year/Form for another year or may even be required to terminate himself/herself from this school.

15.5 Students are strictly forbidden to receive visitors in the school premises during school

hours. (It shall be their duty to advise such visitors to seek formal clearance from the Principal.)

15.6 Students are not permitted to use the school, its premises, or its name to organize any

form of activity inside or outside the School without the prior written approval of the Principal.

15.7 Correspondence/documents sent to parents by the school through the students

concerned must be duly delivered, and the acknowledgement/reply slip returned to the school duly signed by the parent/guardian.

15.8 In all cases where the school arranges or participates in meetings, excursions,

competitions or functions outside school, parents will be duly notified in advance and parents’ approval will be sought.

15.9 In all cases where exemption has been granted for variation to any section or part of

the school rules and regulations, a valid exemption note to this effect must be shown on demand to parties charged with the enforcement of these rules.

15.10 All students are subject to rules which may be introduced from time to time by the

School Management.

15.11 The public pay-phones in Block A are an essential facility for staff and students in the event of an emergency.

15.11.1 Students will not be allowed the use of the public pay-phone during lessons. In

the event of an emergency, the student is required to use the office telephone.

15.11.2 However, users are only allowed the standard 3 minutes per call.

15.11.3 Users must ensure they have an adequate supply of phone-cards and/or coins

for their own needs.

15.11.4 Rule 1.13 on vandalism also applies.

15.12 Notice/bulletin boards are an important source of information relevant to the collective academic interests of students. Unauthorized use of these notice boards by students is strictly prohibited, and prior approval must be obtained from the teacher-in-charge of the facility.

15.13 Students are to exercise care and personal hygiene when utilizing the toilet facilities

so that others are not deprived of the use of the facilities.

15.14 Taps are to be turned off after use or when there is an unexpected disruption of supply. Due care must be taken when using the water cisterns and wash basins in the toilets so as not to deprive others the use of these facilities.

15.15 Students are to seek appropriate written clearance to use the games facilities,

including the school games courts and equipment, at unauthorized times.

15.16 The school car park is at all times strictly out of bounds to all students. It is reserved for use by members of the school staff.

15.17 On days when the school is closed, all facilities (except the school office, if open) will

be out of bounds to students unless prior written clearance has been obtained from the Principal.

15.18 The premises and grounds of the neighbouring schools are out of bounds to all

students unless prior approval has been obtained by the school for its use.

15.19 Respect the properties/teachers of the neighbouring schools/institutions. Due care must be taken by students of the facilities of other schools/institutions which have allowed the school the use of these facilities during inter-school activities and for public examinations.

15.20 Students are not allowed to play futsal after 3.15 p.m unless under the supervision of

a teacher. They must be in school sports attire.

15.21 Students are not allowed to communicate with visitors / parents of other students during school hours.

16 PAYMENT OF DEPOSIT AND FEES

16.1 FEES

16.1.1 All fees due for new students must be paid upon registration. (Refer to the fees invoice given). 2nd Semester fees are to be paid by 30th June.

16.1.2 For current students, school fees are due on the following dates :

1st Semester fees — 31st January

2nd Semester fees — 30th June

16.1.3 A late payment charge of 5% will be imposed on all payments received after the due dates, and may also result in the student not being allowed to attend class.

16.1.4 Mode of payment : Fees can be paid in the following ways:

16.1.4.1 Bank drafts/cashier’s order/cheques should be made payable to:

SEKOLAH METHODIST WESLEY (for KBSM Students) OR

WESLEY METHODIST SCHOOL KL INTERNATIONAL (for IGCSE Students)

16.1.4.2 For payments by Credit Card a service charge of 1.6% will be levied. (This service charge is charged by the bank.

16.1.4.3 Direct bank-in to the school account. Please refer to the Admin Office for details of bank account.

16.1.4.4 CASH PAYMENTS AND POST DATED CHEQUES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

16.1.5 All fees paid are not refundable or transferable. Fees also cannot be transferred to another student or deferred to another year.

16.2 SECURITY DEPOSIT

16.2.1 The Refundable Deposit (the equivalent of one term’s fees) may be claimed on giving a full term’s prior notice in writing while the student is still in school or when the student completes his/her SPM/IGCSE Examination.

16.2.2 Deposits are not refundable if: 16.2.2.1 the student is expelled from the school for breaching the discipline of the

school OR notice is not given on or before the specified dates after accepting the offer for a place OR the student does not attend school OR notice is given after the student has left the school and no longer attends school OR all term fees due are not paid within the dates specified.

16.2.2.2 Deposits will be refunded in the following cases:-

16.2.2.2.1 upon receiving a written request, when your child leaves Wesley Methodist School on the completion of his secondary school education at the end of the year.

16.2.2.2.1.1 after the student’s SPM/IGCSE examination. 16.2.2.2.2 when you give the school a full term’s notice while your child is in

school attending classes for example:

16.2.2.2.2.1 If you wish to withdraw your child between 1st January and 30th April , the notice of withdrawal must be given to the school a term earlier i.e by 31st August of the preceding year.

16.2.2.2.2.2 Similarly, for withdrawals between 1 st May and 31 st August ,

the notice must be received by 31st December of the preceding year and for withdrawals between 1st September and 31st December, the notice must be received by 30th April.

Please note that the Acknowledgement Slip, Receipt of Payment of Deposit along with a letter requesting for the Deposit must be produced when claiming the Security Deposit N.B: All previous versions of the Rules and Regulations are forthwith withdrawn.
