A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL SUNRISE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIMBERLY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer, 2020 Principal Reflections August 2020 What is community? As a principal of an elementary school, I have always strived to create a sense of community in each building in which I have worked. I have made mistakes and had some successes, but generally I believe that the folks in my schools (staff, students and families) have usually experienced a sense of warmth for each other. This year I feel that we are going to be challenged to retain that feeling as we must create several protocols that will feel less personable. In this newsletter you will find many of the changes as they have been planned to date. To begin with, two items that I will draw your attention to are the Picture Day and the Meet Your Teacher/Supply Drop-off dates. First, in order to minimize crowding in our schools, the Picture Day process will be done “by appointment”. I already feel a bit uncomfortable by saying that. The details for this are included in this newsletter, so please call the Office if you're having any difficulty with this new process. Additionally, and also for the same reason, to minimize crowding, Meet Your Teacher and Supply Drop-off will be different. Please note this new process as it is outlined later in this newsletter, and notify our main office if you have any questions. Both of these changes reflect the sorts of changes that will be common this year. Another change that I need to point out at this time, is the notion that at least for the 1st quarter of the school year, we will not be having any visitors or guests in our school. On the surface this may seem inconsequential, but I know that some parents like to come in for a planned or surprise visit for lunch. In order to minimize exposure and crowding, we will not be able to allow this for the time being. This also applies to handing-off your child at the door of the school, and not walking them to their classroom. (I know - this is starting to feel less warm.) As we work through many new systems, it will be everyone’s role to remember that these are in place in order to protect our community and keep our school open for our students. Put plainly, these systems allow us to stay open. In keeping with this effort, we will not be engaging with shared birthday treats until further notice as well. Our drinking fountains will not be accessible either, however the bottle fillers will be in working order, thus I encourage parents to send a water bottle with your children. I realize that many of you have more questions about the changes ahead. I trust that when we (I) fail to get information to you, that you will reach out to us (me). By contacting me directly you help out by making me aware of issues that need attention. Finally, I have been working with staff and other administrators for the past several weeks, tweaking many systems to ensure that our safety guardrails of physical distancing, social grouping and risk mitigation strategies can be implemented. Our daily schedules and traffic patterns will look different. Later this month I will send updated plans for dropping-off and picking-up your children. In the meantime, I wish you all good health. Enjoy the weather! Sean

What is community? As a principal of an elementary school, I have always strived to create a sense of community in each building in which I have worked. I have made mistakes and had some successes, but generally I believe that the folks in my schools (staff, students and families) have usually experienced a sense of warmth for each other.
