May 21, 2014 Dear Parents and Guardians, Re: Teacher Job Action The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) has announced that teachers will escalate job action by entering phase two, rotating strike action, next week. A full one-day strike is scheduled to occur in the Richmond School District on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Although administrators will be at school on Tuesday, no other staff will be present. There will be no instruction. Parents are encouraged to make alternate arrangements for their children, as we cannot guarantee the adequate supervision required for a safely monitored school environment. There will be no bus service for students with special needs and others who rely on District transportation during the May 27 th strike. Please be advised that school district facilities will also be affected by this strike including the district office and other work sites. All daycares, preschools or after school care facilities housed in Richmond schools as well as StrongStart Centres will also be closed. In addition, Continuing Education classes held in school district facilities will be cancelled on May 27. A number of our schools share their locations with Community Centres (Hamilton, Cambie, West Richmond, Thompson, South Arm for example). While the school buildings will be closed, the Community Centres will remain open. At this time, the BCTF has only announced one date for strike action in Richmond, but there is a possibility that more rotating strikes will occur between now and the end of the school year. We will continue to send notices home if more strike action is announced and to provide regular updates on the Richmond School District website at www.sd38.bc.ca and individual school websites. If you need more specific information about school-related matters during the job action, please contact your school principal directly. Our focus remains on providing K-12 curriculum in a safe and collaborative learning environment and to preserve respectful relationships between all partner groups during job action. Our hope is that this dispute will be concluded quickly and that normal school operations will resume as soon as possible. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, and will continue to provide you with updated information as we receive it. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Sincerely, Monica Pamer, EdD Superintendent of Schools 7811 Granville Avenue, Richmond, BC V6Y 3E3 Tel: (604) 668-6000 Fax: (604) 233-0150
