Volunteers

The School System has developed and is implementing plans for using school volunteers which promotes and supports volunteers and their involvement in school-related activities.

The School System welcomes and invites all family members, community stakeholders and businesses to bring their enthusiasm, support and skills into our schools.

History

An internal audit completed in April 2013 concerning school based volunteer programs indicated:

• Many schools had good practices in place but procedures and practices were not consistent throughout the school system.

• The school system did not have written policies and procedures concerning volunteer practices.

• The school system did not have a process in place to complete volunteer background checks when deemed necessary.

The Superintendent formed a committee in order to review and develop procedures related to volunteer programs.  The committee included:

History

In June, the committee reviewed other school districts’ volunteer processes and consulted with school based staff who oversee the volunteers in their schools.

The committee recommended to the Superintendent and the Policy Committee the implementation of a Volunteer Handbook. The Handbook was reviewed by the Policy and Volunteer Committee. The Handbook included many of the forms and procedures already in use by the school system.

The Board approved a new Volunteer Policy at their September Board meeting.

 

Building Positive Relationships

The School Volunteer Program is made up of individuals who contribute their personal service to the schools in order to strengthen and enrich the educational experiences of our students.

A volunteer is a person who, working under staff supervision, contributes service without financial remuneration from the school system. The volunteer supports educational activities at the school or outside the school site and includes athletic coaches who do not receive compensation or remuneration for their services.

Volunteer Programs

School Volunteers:

Provide the schools with educational and support services.

Have the support of and work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents, local business and parent organizations.

Work with a volunteer coordinator and an established organizational format.

Volunteer Programs

Volunteer: Level I

All Level I Volunteers work under the direction or supervision of a school staff member. Volunteer duties may include providing:

Classroom Assistance

Clerical Assistance

Library or Media Center Assistance

Cafeteria Assistance

Volunteer Programs

Volunteer: Level II A Level II Volunteer, while working under the direction of a school staff member, may be placed in a situation where they are alone with students.

Volunteer duties may include: 

Tutors - Providing one-on-one remediation

Field Trip Chaperones

Effective January 1, 2014 Level II Volunteers will be required to have background checks and pay a fee of $20.00 that will be effective for a three-year period.

Contact the school of your choice and their Volunteer Coordinator will

assist you in matching up your interest to the school needs.

Effective January 1, 2014 you may sign-up to volunteer on the NHCS website.

How do I Volunteer?

We welcome all parents, guardians, business and community members to

volunteer in our schools.

Volunteers are a vital part of the school system.
