Investigating Science Careers

The purpose of this project is to introduce you to science related careers. When you think of science related careers what are some common things that come to mind? Doctors? Nurses? Chemists? Biologists? There are hundreds of careers out there that involve science and it is important that we are aware of them!

Go to the following website to answer these questions about science, math and engineering related careers: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/science_careers.shtml?From=Tab

1. Pick FIVE careers from this list and answer the following questions for EACH career (Note: THREE of these careers need to have the “In Demand” notation beside them):

a. What classes in High School should you take if you wanted to have this career?b. What type of post-secondary education (degree, Master’s etc) do you for this

career?c. What is the estimated yearly salary of someone working in this career?d. Briefly in 5-7 sentences describe the nature of the work involved with this career.e. Under the “On The Job” section: pick 3 things that these people do at their jobs

that you think would be interesting and explain why you picked them.

2. From your list of five choose ONE career that interests you the most. (Decide quickly because each person in class must choose a different career!)

a. Create a presentation about the career you chose. You must have a visual aid and a short handout for your classmates. You must discuss why you chose this career as well as the five parts from Part 1 in your presentation and your handout. *Note: Your handout should have blanks on it that your classmates need to fill in as you give your presentation*

b. Create THREE Multiple Choice or True/False questions about the career you chose. The questions AND answers must be handed in.

Part Three:Handout For Classmates/Test Questions (10 marks for handout, 9 marks for test questions)

- Is the handout only one page?- Is the handout nicely organised?- Are there at least 10 blanks on the handout that the class can fill in as the presentation progresses?- Is the handout handed in the day before the presentations? - Is the “answer key” for the handout given to the teacher BEFORE the presentation?- Are the three test questions handed in on the day of the presentation?
