Welcome to the Careers Network Science, Engineering and Technology Fair. This event aims to provide you with the opportunity to meet a select, high quality group of employers and discuss employment opportunities for 2014.

Page 3: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FAIR - Intranet home€¦ · apprentices, and help them achieve exceptional results from the outset. We look for technology-focused, intellectually agile people,

Hints and tips to help you make the most of the

Science, Engineering and Technology Fair Plan to leave the fair with more than a collection of brochures, sweets and pens. With a bit of preparation, you can gain a lot more by having informative conversations with representatives and perhaps making your mark with some of them…

Have a few questions prepared in advance to help introduce yourself to employers (and smile!)

Read this Fair Guide and be well informed about what employers have to offer, in

terms of graduate opportunities and work experience, before you approach them.

Research the employers through the careers pages of their web sites.

Ask specific questions which indicate that you have done some background research. You may have limited time to make an impact so make sure you’re prepared.

Give the impression of being reasonably well focused on the sort of work you

want, why you would like it and why you would be good at it.

Don’t restrict yourself to talking to just a few employers. A Fair is an ideal time to talk to companies you haven’t heard of before.

Employers will not usually be collecting CV’s on the day, as you will be

encouraged to apply through their normal channels. However, a well-prepared CV might be useful when introducing yourself.

Before leaving an employer, you may find it helpful to make a note of the name of

the person you spoke to. It may be useful if you wish to contact the employer at a later date.

Formal dress is not required, but aim for a generally smart appearance.

Aim to arrive early and give yourself plenty of time to look around and ask

questions. This publication is also available in alternative formats, please request them from: [email protected]

The PSA (Activity) will help you to:

• Develop your skills via involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Entrepreneur & Innovation (EI) The University of Birmingham’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation department can assist you in exploring and reaching your potential whether you want to be enterprising in an organisation or as an entrepreneur. Either will significantly advance your employability while at University.

In the current climate, employers are now seeking a different kind of candidate. They seek students and graduates with not only qualifications which suggest a higher level of ability for the job, but also experience which demonstrates the skills, ability and tendencies to think and act “differently” and “creatively” to a problem or project. They want enterprising people.

An enterprising person shares the same sets of skills and qualities as an entrepreneur. They can demonstrate and apply typical enterprising skills in their degree course, their work experience, within their extra-curricular activities or in employment.

Come and find out how you can be enterprising whatever your choice of career and about our free start up programme BSEEN (part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund).
