iSPACE, the STEM Learning Place, a non-profit organization, serving the Greater Cincinnati Region makes learning exciting by providing engaging and immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs to schools, families and the community. iSPACE programs are aligned with national and state educational standards and complement teaching curricula but they reach beyond the formal classroom setting to spark curiosity and inspire interest in STEM. iSPACE uses best practices in innovative programs to help students and educators build confidence and interest in STEM knowledge and careers. Programs and partnerships are designed to fill the region’s future workforce in manufacturing, technology, research, health care and other STEM-related fields.

“From the teacher perspective a field trip at iSPACE is out of this world!”

“My students were engaged and stepped up to make sure they didn’t let (their classmates) down. iSPACE is inclusive and the staff handles special needs students with grace and dignity making them included, but also being aware of how to meet their needs.”– Carrie Murray , Hopewell Elementary

During 2015, twenty-three area educators engaged in the iSPACE STEM Educators Academy which is an 18+ hour content-based professional development for teachers.

“I cannot say enough thanks for making this free for us and for giving us the tools and lessons we NEED! Through you having us experience the learning itself, you also gave us the same enthusiasm to go share the lesson as our students will eventually feel. As the year came to a close and my students tested, I not only felt like I taught them the necessary components of our standards, but I was also excited

that we had so much fun studying them together! Again, I cannot say enough positive about the

training I have received this year through iSPACE”.

– Tish Wodetzki, 5th grade teacher, John Foster Dulles Elementary

IGNITE Engineering

Hartwell and Roselawn-Condon first graders…our region’s youngest engineers. iSPACE is bringing IGNITE Engineering to two CPS schools. This is year two for this same cohort of students who will be engaged in this program for the next five years as we work with under-served students, schools and educators to develop our region’s future STEM workforce.

“Our class has learned an amazing amount of skills this year from being involved in iSPACE. The adult leaders are wonderful, very knowledgeable, skilled and good with the children. In my 28 years of teaching, this is definitely the best program that has been brought to our students from an outside source. I am amazed how the children are able to incorporate these skills in other parts of the learning process. I wish every school student had such a terrific opportunity, but I am glad that my class has been able to experience this wonderful program.”

– Kathie Russell, Hartwell Educator

Sixty young women grades 5 through 12 participated in our annual Spaghetti with Betty event to celebrate girls in STEM.

“iSPACE hosted our 2nd annual Spaghetti with Betty dinner to honor past iSPACE Board member, Betty Huck, a longtime advocate for girls in STEM and to recognize young women in our region who are involved in STEM activities and interested in

STEM careers. Besides having dinner with professional women in STEM, the girls were captivated by keynote speaker, Whitney Gaskins, visiting professor with the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, the only African-American female currently teaching in the faculty of the College of Engineering. The girls also engaged in a hands-on STEM challenge.”– Lori McAlister, iSPACE

Banner Schools ProgramIn 2015, iSPACE established our Banner School Program whereby school districts commit to providing a full grade level of students iSPACE hands-on programs for a minimum of three years. In 2015 three districts were named banner schools and several more will be added in 2016.

iSPACE 2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Spaghetti with Betty – Celebrating Girls in STEM

“I love how the sessions are applicable to all of us (because we all teach 5th grade science!!) I have been to other workshops where only some things are lessons that I would do. With this program, I can literally do 100% of the lessons, which is awesome. I love how we receive the free science materials for our classrooms. I am using rocket launchers now and LOVE THEM. I also am grateful for the relationships I have formed through the program. They are invaluable as we try and navigate this crazy job called teaching!”– Rebecca Williams, Mason Intermediate School

“I attended an iSPACE Summer Camp the first time when I was 12 and was hooked! I was excited about the creativity and problem solving challenges that iSPACE robotics program provided. iSPACE inspired me to want to be involved with STEM and robotics at my school. Today I am the Build Team Lead on my FTC Team 5040 Loveland

Nuts and Bolts, involved with INTERalliance and worked on our schools Showcase Project for Tech Olympics. I am grateful to iSPACE for giving me the opportunity to excel in STEM.”– Garrett Royal

“Technology touches nearly every aspect of our modern day lives. This technology is derived from doctors, scientists and engineers who have a yearning for advancing the human condition through science. Much like athletic or artistic achievement this yearning begins and is fostered through what you experience as a child. iSPACE is Cincinnati’s focal point for developing interest in STEM and bringing forth a fervor in future generations in Cincinnati that feed the ad-vancing of the human condition. Cincinnati based companies need this workforce, the United States lacks sufficient growth for said future workforce. iSPACE is here to help.”– Tom Simpson, Senior VP and CTO Cincinnati Bell
