terested show filled by
their knowledge.
Also, there was a com-
petition of the best
scientific picture. In
addition of our own sections, SQU stu-
dents, Al Bellah high school, RG16 and
one of the groups in Injaz competition
were participated in this event. Orga-
nized well, a lot of information and ex-
cellent were the comments that men-
tioned by the respective Dean and
guests for Science Festival. At the end,
the names of winners were an-

Applied Sciences Department staff and students participated in the First International SQU Chemistry Conference on Recent Trends in Drug Development. (10-12th November 2015) The conference focused on a wide range of themes toward drug discovery which included synthetic products in drug discovery, drug protein interactions, molecular modeling, natural products of medicinal plants and Omani medicinal plants. Internationally renowned scientists were invited in the conference for presenting their research. There was active participation from Applied Chemistry staff and students in the international conference as detailed below:
Dr. Mohammed Silwadi gave an oral presentation on "Development of Novel and New spectroscopic Methods for Determination of Impunities and Degradation of Tricyclic Dibenzazepine Class of Drugs". The poster session also in-cluded contributions from Dr. Devadoss ( Environment friendly process for the preparation of aromatic aldehydes using Ce3+/Ce4+ redox mediator in methanesulphonic acid), Mrs. Amatur Rouqia (Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial studies of some Novel Chromeno-Oxadiazole Analogs) and Dr. Dhanalakshmi (Antiinflammatory stud-ies of nanocomposition of fluorinated hydroxyapatite). Students from the department, Khadija Al Ghawii and Asma Al Harassi, also presented a poster entitled "Extraction of pectin and its role in pharmaceutical industry". Also Ms. A. Al Mahrouqi who is an alumnus from APS, presented a poster on "Spectrofluorimetric determination of diphenhy-dramine HCl in pharmaceutical preparations using eosin as a complexing agent". The work presented by the students was carried out in the Applied Sciences Department under Dr. Syed Najmul Hejaz. Abstract for the poster entitled "Extraction and Characterization of essential oil from Frankincense" by Awadh Kalshat, student from APS (under the guidance of Dr. Shinisha Sujesh) was also accepted for the poster presentation. Also participating were Dr. Taqveem Banu and Dr. Shinisha Sujesh.
The conference offered a great opportunity for the participants to interact with the scientific community at large. Moreover it also provided a valuable learning experience for the participants as sessions included cutting edge re-search presented by eminent scientists and pioneers in the field.
