PROJECT INFORMATION PACKET SCIENCE FAIR WOODLAND ELEMENTARY Science Fair : Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Sponsored by Woodland PTA

CONGRATULATIONS!! You’ve taken the first step towards the exciting challenge of a science fair project! Expect to have fun, work hard, and learn a great deal about a topic that truly interests you. 2nd and 3rd grade students – it’s a voluntary, at-home project. You may choose a demonstration, or an investigation. 4th and 5th grade students – teachers require a science investigation project. Check with your teacher if you aren’t sure if it’s an investigation. Also, this is an at-home project. Everyone, doing a project ON YOUR OWN will help you learn more about the total process. No partners, please. Remember it is YOUR responsibility to do the work. Adults can assist you in gathering information, materials/ supplies, plus monitor your work.

Project Choice Demonstration: a procedure that explains a principle and how /why something works. This project will include a TITLE, MATERIALS, PROCEDURE, HOW IT WORKS AND WHY IT WORKS, SOURCES.

Investigation (Required for 4th and 5th grade): Conduct a controlled experiment to test a hypothesis. Include: QUESTION, HYPOTHESIS, MATERIALS, PROCEDURE, DATA/RESULTS, CONCLUSION, SOURCES.

Resources Available There is a shelf in the library with lists of possible projects, science books, and science books on the shelves (500-630s). Some suggestions: Hundreds of Science Fair Projects for Students or Elementary School Science Fair Projects. You can ask parents, friends, and teachers for help. Also, if you have Internet access, it is an excellent source to find ideas. Be sure to make it your own rather than just copy what someone else has done. Some website suggestions: www.all-science-fair-project.com www.sciencekids.co.nz www.sciencebuddies.org

Next Steps 1. Read over the information about the project in this packet.

a. Parts of the Project- pgs. 2-3b. Presentation Scoring (optional for 2nd-4th grade) pg. 4

2. Research, read, research… Determine what you would like to learn more about. Then decide ifit will be a good project for you. Talk to your parents about what is needed.

3. Complete the Science Fair Entry form (due March 7) to reserve a place in the gym. Forms areavailable from your teacher, in the library, or outside Mrs. Lamfers’ classroom (in the annex).

4. Be creative! Get started! Check the calendar to help you stay on track to complete the projecton time! Share with others what you’re doing!

Any questions? Contact Mrs. Lamfers. Email, leave a voicemail, or give a written message to the office.

PARTS OF THE PROJECT A. Written Report B. Materials C. Display Board

A. Written Report -- 7 parts*A Written Report form is available. You may sign up in your classroom for a report form. *2nd

and 3rd graders, select either a demonstration or investigation.*All written information should also be on the Display Board.

1. TOPIC, TITLE, (demonstration) OR

QUESTION (investigation)Demonstration example: How Plants GrowInvestigation example: Do plants grow better with plain water or Diet Pepsi?

2. Demonstration: Explain what you want tofind out.

Investigation: HYPOTHESIS – A statement about what I think will be the answer to my question.

Example: I want to find out what will happen if I give the plant coffee instead of water.

Example: If I give one plant water and one Diet Pepsi, the watered plant will grow more.

3. MATERIALS – What supplies will I need?Equipment and materials needed for myproject. Make a list and try to geteverything before beginning.

Example: two potted plants (same size and kind), Diet Pepsi, water, water dropper for measuring liquids, ruler, graph paper, journal

4. PROCEDURE – What am I going to do?

Write down the steps to take.Do it in numbered order. Then, I’ll follow my plan and adjust it ifI need to.

Investigation: be sure to test thehypothesis many times not just oneday, one time.

Example: 1. Label potted plants 1 and 2. 2. Put plants in a warm place.3. Day 1 measure the plant height and graph it.4. Each day put 10 milliliters of water in Plant 1 and10 milliliters of Diet Pepsi in Plant 2.5. Measure the plants every day for three weeks andrecord measurement on the graph (to the nearest ½centimeter).6. Check to see which plant grew more.7. Keep a journal of plant growth in drawings andwords.

5. DATA COLLECTING/RESULTSDemonstration: EXPLAIN How and WhyIT WORKS

Keep accurate records of what you do each time. Investigation: Keep the variables the same.

Show results with data tables, journal, photographs, drawings, charts, graphs, or a combination of these.

Examples:

Page 4: SCIENCE FAIR ENTRY FORM Project Title:...Electrical outlet needed? Circle if YES ... materials/ supplies, plus monitor your work. Project Choice . Demonstration: a procedure that explains

6. CONCLUSION – How can I apply thisnew information?Demonstration: WHY did it happen?WHAT did I learn?Investigation: State whether or not myhypothesis was correct/true or not.Once the investigation is done, studythe results and come to a conclusion. Then determine WHY it happened. Besure to include data.

Example: Plant 1 (water) grew from 7cm to 10cm with a growth of 3cm. Plant 2 (Diet Pepsi) grew from 7cm to 12cm with a growth of 5cm. My hypothesis was wrong. The plant given Diet Pepsi grew more. This might have happened because of where I placed the plants, with Plant 2 having more sun or in a warmer area. To start with, Plant 2 might have been slightly taller than Plant 1. This result does not mean I am going to feed plants Diet Pepsi. I should try this again to see if I get the same data/ results.

7. SOURCES AND REFERENCES – Books, websites, articles I usedWrite down the books, websites, and magazine articles used to support my project. I’ll givecredit to the sources of my information. Besides, others might want to know what sources areavailable for my topic! Use this format (including italics, periods and commas):(2nd/3rd graders- need author and title only)

Book – Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date. Reference (encyclopedia, etc.) – “Title of Article.” Name of Reference. Edition or Volume number. Year. Page(s). Example: "Science is Fun." The Science and Inventions Encyclopedia. 3rd ed., 1997. Internet – Author/editor (if available). “Title of article.” Site URL. Publisher. Publication Date. Date of access. Interview – Person’s Last name, First name, type of interview (in person, phone, text, Facetime). Date of interview. Magazine – Author’s Last name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Magazine name, Day Month Year, Page number(s).

B. MATERIALS

Bring materials and equipment you used in your project for others to view. If it’s too messy or easily broken, bring some of your materials, or include only photos! If your display needs electricity, be sure to mark it on the Entry Form. YOU also need to bring an extension cord. Don’t forget the written report!

C. DISPLAY BOARD

YOUR NAME goes on the back! The Display Board should stand on its own. Consider cardboard, tagboard, or foam board. Boards can often be purchased at Dollar Tree, Walmart, Fred Meyer, Hobby Lobby, or Office Depot. Hint: Get it early!Table space is approximately 36”x36.”

Be sure to work neatly and carefully! The written report (typed or hand written) can be enlarged to place on the Display Board! Information can be arranged the way you think it will be easy to read and in a logical order. Top to bottom, left to right. Name on the back?
