Investigating Science
Welcome to your Science homework booklet. This booklet is designed to give you some
extra practise on the key areas in the “Light” section of the course.
You need to carry out tasks 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Then choose either the bronze, silver or gold task – go on, challenge yourself!
Don’t forget to fill in the last page and ask a parent/carer to sign the box on the front.
TASK 1- Light and the eye
Light is needed to help us to see objects. Answer the questions below about light.
1. Circle the correct bold word in the sentences below.
The Sun is luminous/non-luminous because it emits/transmits light.
The light reflects/transmits off an object that is luminous/non-luminous into
your eye so that you see it.
Most objects do not transmit light – they are translucent/opaque.
2. Match the following definitions to the correct keyword from the box below.
Definition Keyword
Gives out light
Does not allow light to travel
through it
Objects that you can see through
Light can pass through but it is
scattered as the object is frosted
Does not give out light
Light bounces off a surface
Light is taken into a material
Transparent Luminous Opaque Non-luminous
Translucent Absorbed Reflected
3. The diagram below shows a book that needs light to be seen. Draw lines and
arrows between the objects to show how the book can be seen.
4. How long does it take for light to travel from the Sun to the Earth?

the words in the box below.
What is the function of the different part of the eye? Find out and write your
answer in the space provided.

description of how the eye works in the space below. Use as many of the
keywords from the box as you can in your answer.

TASK 2 - Reflection
1. Match the keyword to its meaning by drawing lines between them.

mirror
An image that
appears to be inside

A ray that comes
from a light source to
the mirror
A mirror with a flat
surface
A light ray that
bounces off a mirror
2. When light hits a surface such as a mirror, it bounces off the mirror – it is
reflected. When light is reflected in this way it follows a law known as the “law
of reflection”. The diagram below shows the “law of reflection”.
What is the “law of reflection”? Use the diagram above to help you.

4. The diagrams below show what happens to light when it hits a smooth and a
rough surface. The lines on the diagrams show the rays of light.
Using the diagrams above, explain why the light rays are reflected differently
from a smooth and rough surface.

TASK 3 – Refraction
Refraction is another property of light that happens when it travels from one medium to
another. For example from air to water. The diagram below shows what it looks like
when light is refracted.
1. Using the diagram above, explain what has happened to the light ray when it has
enetered the water.

2. Look at the diagram below of light moving through a glass block. This shows
what happens to light when it travels through different materials.
a) On the diagram, mark the line that represents the normal. Also mark the angle
of incidence and the angle of reflection, the incident ray and the reflected
ray.
b) Using the diagram above, write an explanation for the change in the path of the
light. Include words from the box below in your answer. Hint: think speed.

3. How does a lens work? Complete the sentences below using the words from the
box.
We have a lens in each of our ________________. This is a ______________
lens. The job of this lens is to _______________ the ________________ so that
we can ___________. The point at which the rays cross is called the focus or the
_______________________________. The light is ______________________
as it goes into the lens and as it comes back out.
4. Using the information from above, complete the diagram below to show what
happens to the light as it passes through the lens.

5. Fill in the blank spaces from the clues on the next page and then put the words
into the grid.
CLUES TO SOLVE
2 across Light travels in ___________________ lines.
11 across Incoming light is called the ___________________ ray.
1 down It strikes a _______________ between air and a glass block.
7 across At this point we draw the _____________ line
10 across at ___________ degrees to the glass surface.
4 across The air is one _____________ and the glass is the other.
3 down Travelling from air to glass, the light ray is bent or ______________
2 down because light travels _____________ in glass.
5 down The angle of ________________________ is
12 across _______________ than the
8 down
9 across of ______________________ and
6 across bends _____________ the normal.
TASK 4 – Colour
1. White light is made up of seven different colours of light. Using coloured pens or
pencils, show what happens to white light when it enters a prism.
Write a descrption below of what you have shown in your diagram.

2. We can make all the colours of light using three colours. These are known as the
primary colours. Write down the three primary colours of light.

The primary colours of light can be mixed to make the secondary colours.
On the diagram above colour the outer parts of the circles in the primary colours
and where they overlap, in the secondary colours that they make. If you don’t
have the correct colours, label your diagram instead.

it reflects.

TASK 5 – Bronze, silver or gold? Complete one of the tasks below.
Bronze task
Quiz time. Make a quiz about “light” and ask someone at home to answer it. Use the
last page to show the quiz you made .
Silver task
How is the eye like a camera? Both the eye and a camera are designed to produce an
image. Find out how an eye and a camera are similar or different in the way they
produce an image. You can add diagrams too. Use the last page to show your findings.
Gold task
Lenses. When the lens in your eyes doesn’t work properly any more you can’t see very
well. Carry out research on either: conditions that can affect our eyes and ways that we
can correct them or carry out research into how glasses work to help us see better. You
can include some diagrams too. Use the last page to show what you have found out.
