Was Mount St. Helen's Moonstruck Lab Questions
1. I predict that since the gravitational pull on the arth is not strong enough to
!racture the ground "to then cause an eruption#$ or at least not %ake a large
enough !racture to do so.&. There ere a total o! (1 days recorded and 13 sequences )beteen March
1* and +ece%ber ,1- that recorded a %inus tide "1./ and loer#.,. 3 dates had a %a0or eruption during a lo tide.*. 2 days and 11 sequences had no eruption "s%all or %a0or# and a strong
%oon pull.. In only a !e cases do I see both a lo tide and an eruption. So I can't really
call this a relationship.(. There is little or no correlation beteen tides and the eruption o! Mount St.
Helens. 3nly , out o! 1, lo tides did an eruption occur$ %aking it a %ere
coincidence.
4. 5ased o6 the data$ no. 7s said above$ ith such a lo relationship beteenthe tides and the eruptions$ you cannot dra the conclusion that the %oon's
gravitational pull caused the eruption o! Mount St. Helens$ that this as
si%ply a coincidence.
