* Hard to Soft Glass GradingsDirect Seal I

* Metallic gradings between hard andsoft glasses have been much soughtafter to avoid the well known objec-tions to the all-glass gradings. Aboutthree years ago G-E metallic gradingwas developed to permit sealing softglass tubes to hard glass exhaust sys-tems. These gradings have worked outsatisfactorily under production condi-tions wherever they have been used, and, it is believed, will give satisfactionunder the most adverse circumstan-ces. All of the recognized objectionsto the all-glass grading (fragility, high

initial cost, low dielectric strengthand inability to withstand high ten-peratures) have been materially re-duced by means of this new device.G-E grading consists of two glass-

to-metal seals, one hard glass and onesoft glass, brazed together. The stand-ard gradings are equipped at one endwith 13 mm. B-1 Lead Glass Tubing, and at the other with 13 mm. 772 HR(Corning) Nonex. Information andprices with respect to the furnishingof these gradings with other glassessupplied on request.

two new products of outstanding merit* TABLETS CALCIUM PHOSPHATE COMPOUND WITH VIOSTEROL 10 D SQUIBB

Recently published papers emphasize again the marked calcium deficiency existing in agreat number of patients. Proper calcium therapy requires the administration of calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin D in proper combination.

These tablets supply calcium and phosphorus in approximately optimum ratio and ampleVitamin D to facilitate their absorption and utilization. Each tablet contains 9 grains Dical-cium Phosphate, 6 grains Calcium Gluconate and 245 Steenbock units of Vitamni D in theform of Viosterol. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus is as 1.625 to 1.

They are indicated for those conditions which may be benefitted by calcium admninistra-tion. Marketed in bottles of 50 tablets.

* PROLACTIN SQUIBB-A highly purified, aqueous solution of the lactation-stimulating hoimone ofthe anterior pituitary gland. It is prepared according to the method developed by Dr. 0. E.Riddle of the Carnegie Institute at Cold Spring Harbor.

Physiologically assayed. Clinical tests show it to be effective in stimulating milk secretionin women whose milk is inadequate.

WXith two injections, intramuscularly, 24 hours apart, clinical effect usually begins within24 hours and in the majority of cases induces lactation up to approximately the normallevel. No progressive effect with higher dosages.

Has no other endocrine effect. No possibility of upset in the child because Prolactin isfree from other hormones of the anterior lobe. Marketed in 5-cc. vials containing 40 birdunits per cc.For further information, write Professional Service Department, 745 Fifth Ave., Newn York

For research purposeswe offerPure, Crystalline

CAROTENE(Pro- Vitamin A)

of highest vitamin A activity. This is the firstfraction of carotene crystals from the ether ex-tract of dried carrots. It is relatively rich in betacarotene, which is believed to be twice as potentbiologically as alpha carotene. [Professor RichardKuhn, Chemistry and Industry 52, 981 (1933)].

Biochemists and physicians are increasingly in-terested in the functions of carotene in man andin animals because of its presence in the bloodstream and in various organs, and its relation tothe building up of resistance to infections.

This makes it important to have a source of purecarotene of known potency for accurate investiga-tion of these and related problems. We are sup-plying carotene of high purity to leading researchand educational institutions in this country andabroad, for research investigations and for lecturedemonstration.Write for prices and information. AT THE close of the day, at the end of theweek, at the turn of the year, when yourmind ranges back to sum it up, what countsfor most?

Is it not the people you spoke to and whatyou said to them and what they said to you?The ideas born in conversation, the new slantgiven to your thoughts by a word or two,the greetings and farewells, the hopes con-fessed and questions answered-these anda thousand other vocal expressions make upthe story of our lives. To be cut off from human contact is to

live but part of life. The wonder of the tele-phone is that it multiplies human contacts,

B E L L T E L E P H O N I

restores broken ones, strengthens strainedones and constantly develops new ones.

Just think of this the next time you usethe telephone. With no greater effort thanthe calling of a number or the turning of adial, you can speak to almost anyone, any-where. No place or person is far away whenyou can say "I'll call you up."

Is this somebody's birthday? Is someone in another townbeing married or celebrating a wedding anniversary? Thesound of your voice and your good wishes will brightenthe day. The rates are low. You can make a daytime sta-tion-to-station call to most places 75 miles awayfor about50c. During the evening and night periods many rates areI5%o to 40%o lower than in the daytime.

IF- - - -

Says A. C. VEATCH:"To the mass of students, bothyoung and old, a knowledge ofgeology has value only as it formspart of a broad cultural back-ground. Dr. Snider 's work[EARTH HISTORY] is uniquein meeting this requirement, andsince this is true it seems to mealso better as an introduction togeology for those who intend tospecialize in any one of its manyaspects than the courses generallygiven. My view in this last par-ticular is based on experiencewith many assistants, trained ingeology in many different collegesand universities, who, it seemedto me, would have been bettergeologists if they had had abroader initial background thanthat apparently afforded by thecourses they had received.
