About Science Weekly Five Science Weekly Five is a program easy to implement and change to meet the needs of you and your students. This program is great for grades 3-4, but could work at other grade levels as well! The ac?vi?es can be completed in as liRle as 15 minutes each day once your rou?nes are in place. The prepara?on is very simple and is a great way to supplement your science program. With the stress added to other subjects with standardized tes?ng and NCLB, The Science Weekly Five is a great way to cover all standards in depth and keep students interested and mo?vated. Its all about sta?ons! The sta?ons are the same each week; you just trade out materials for the concept you choose. Sta'on 1- Read and Comprehend (short reading passage with paraphrasing ac?vity and sentence stem) Sta'on 2- Explore! (Hands-on ac?vity to create a model or diagram) Sta'on 3- Organize It! (Using a graphic organizer or diagram to help students organize abstract concepts in a concrete, visual way) Sta'on 4- Center Ac?vity (Ac?vity to further explore a concept) Sta'on 5- Vocabulary (Cut and paste matching of terms and deni?ons and a Vocabulary Four Square for one important term)

Setting Up 1. Print and laminate the Science Weekly Five Signs and Science Weekly Five Direc?ons. The signs help establish an organized climate for the ac?vity and the direc?ons will be the same for each ac?vity for all of the weeks. Use a folder, baggie, or basket for each sta?on to contain all of the materials. Dierent color baskets clearly labeled with the sta?on name work nicely if you don't have dierent areas of the room to store the materials. 2. Print o the lesson of your choice and follow the direc?ons on the Teacher Resource Page to prepare the materials. The prepara?on is always as easy as possible and requires only basic supplies. 3. Each student gets a Student Recording Packet for the weekly ac?vity. Either have students glue the Student Recording Packets in their science journals or keep them in folders. There are two types of Student Recording Packets included. The rst can be folded into a booklet and stapled. The second can be copied as is, front and back, then stapled. 4. On the rst day of the week, have students glue their Student Recording Packet in their science journals. They need to ll in the ?tle and complete the K(Know) and W(What I Want to Know) on the cover of their Packet before going to a sta?on. This should take about 5 minutes. 5. Group students and complete the ac?vi?es. 6. Aher comple?ng the last ac?vity, give students about 5 minutes to complete the last page of their Student Recording Packet with what they learned and complete the L of their KWL.

Tips and Tricks Grouping Students You may want to create the groups yourself at rst un?l the students get used to it. You can also have cards the students draw from a "Sor?ng Hat" that have the dierent ac?vi?es listed in a dierent order, one ac?vity per day. There are 5 sta?ons, so for a class of 25, you should have 5 students per group. I ran 5 copies and laminated Weekly Rou?ne Bookmarks and the students draw one each week to know what order they will go in. Establishing a Climate of Learning Excellent management is key to maximizing ?me on task. Chances are the students will enjoy the ac?vi?es, but they do need to be taught how you want them completed. Rules or norms for the classroom during Weekly Five ?me will help students understand the expecta?ons. What do I do while the students are working? I see the teacher's role as a facilitator of learning. The ac?vi?es should be completed without teacher assistance for the most part. You can pull a small group during this ?me, walk around and supervise student work, or work with students in a sta?on you think your students may nd more challenging. The nice thing is that you have many choices!

Management Tips Here are some of the things I do to help manage sta?on ?me: 1. Some?mes I have a parent volunteer that comes in to help. I have him help with the sta?on that requires the most support. 2. Vocabulary sta?on and Reading sta?on require very liRle support because it is the exact same rou?ne each week. That way, it's easier to supervise the other 3 groups. 3. I have a folder for each sec?on with the laminated sign, laminated direc?ons, and any student pages inside. I keep them each in 5 dierent parts of the room that easily accommodate the ac?vity. 4. I randomly group the students for this because I group them by abili?es, needs, and interests most of the ?me. I use the Grouping Bookmarks. 5. I start each class with Science Weekly Five, so no ?me is wasted. They come in, put down their things, and immediately get to work. 6. I set a large ?mer for 15 minutes and give a 5 minute warning. 7. I keep a lot of resources and books on the topic around in case the students need to look something up. They can also use any of their own personal resources, notes, or journals. 8. I encourage group work and collabora?on, but the conversa?ons must be two things: on topic and using a whisper. 9. I insist that they read the direc?ons and discuss with their group before asking me a ques?on about what to do. I rarely get any ques?ons about what is expected. 10. I have cute s?ckers that I give out for excellent work. Some of the kids really do quality work and they like the recogni?on for it. 11. For grading, I assess the general quality and thought that went into crea?ng 1 or 2 of the weeks for each 6 weeks. I do not grade all of them because they are s?ll in the learning process when comple?ng them. 12. Occasionally, I have them trade Student Recording Packets and give each other glows and grows on their work. 13. Have fun with it! Kids love ac?vi?es, doing cut and paste, and learning! 14. I assign a student to be the "Sta?on Checker" that makes sure everything it put where it belongs at the end of sta?on ?me. 15. I have a voice monitor for each group that makes sure the volume level is appropriate. 16. When a group nishes their sta?on early, they clean up and silently increase the quality of their Student Recording Packets at their seats.
