exAMinAtion deveLopMent iteM writing trAining & introduction to onLine iteM writingMondAY, june 24 This session will consist of a presentation to orientate Diplomates to the item writing process. The presentation will provide a brief overview of content development/validity, standard setting, the purpose of item writing, and item development. The main focus will be on item development including: requirements for item writing, acceptable item formats, style guidelines, item classifications, and item review and approval process. An introduction to the online system for item writing will immediately follow the presentation. Open to all Diplomates.

exAMinAtion deveLopMent workshopsMondAY, june 24 & tuesdAY, june 25 Based on the current need for each specialty, activities performed during these workshops will include written exam item writing, item review and approval by board/committee members, review of candidate comments made during the previous test administration, writing and review of oral cases, item referencing, and written exam review. Open to all Diplomates.

For the security of exam content during the annual meeting, most item and exam development has moved to an electronic format. Bringing reference materials and laptops are strongly encouraged for exam development and would be productive in helping to facilitate your involvement with this CME activity.

He has practiced emergency medicine for 16 years. His presentation will provide an overview of medical software applications that can help provide safer medical care and decrease the risk of adverse outcomes.

LingAppA s. AMernAth, Md, will present New Technology Improving Patient Safety. Dr. Amernath is chairman and medical director of Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica, NY, and clinical assistant professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He has practiced emergency medicine for 20 years. His presentation will give an overview of the use of electronic medical records and ultrasound guided procedures to increase patient safety.

Arthur L. berMAn, do, FAAiM, will present Preventing Transmission of Hepatitis B and C in Healthcare Providers. Dr. Berman practices gastroenterology at Florida Digestive Health Specialists in Largo, FL. He is an adjunct clinical professor at NOVA Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine and an assistant clinical professor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has practiced gastroenterology for 27 years. Dr. Berman will outline ways for healthcare providers to prevent transmission of hepatitis B and C, as well as signs, symptoms, and treatment options.

joseph M. dAMiAni, Md, FAAprs, will present Infant and Pediatric Abduction & Abandonment. Dr. Damiani is the owner of West Texas Plastic Surgery. He has 30 years of experience in plastic surgery. As a former hospital chief of staff, Dr. Damiani helped develop and implement a program to prevent infant abduction. He will discuss healthcare facility policies and procedures related to infant abduction and abandonment.

jAck v. greiner, do, phd, FAAss, will present Preserving the Ocular Surface’s Role as a Barrier to Infection. Dr. Greiner is a clinical associate scientist at Schepens Eye Research Institute, director of the Boston Ocular Surface Center, and director of Clinical Eye Research of Boston. He has academic affiliations with Harvard Medical, Tufts University School of Medicine, and the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has 25 years of experience in ophthalmology. Dr. Greiner’s presentation

will cover the identification, treatment, and prevention of dry eye diseases that can cause irreversible damage to the ocular surface.

surinder k. kAd, Md, FAAiM, Mph, MbA, will present The Fen-Phen Debacle. Dr. Kad is medical director of Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, part-time hospitalist at Baptist Hospital Northeast and professor at St. Catharine College. He has been in practice for over 38 years. His specialties include internal medicine, nephrology, and geriatrics. Dr. Kad will discuss the history of anti-obesity drugs, the link between Fen-Phen and pulmonary hypertension, and treatment modalities for pulmonary hypertension.

oMoFoLAsAde b. kosoko-LAsAki, Md, FAAss, will present Domestic Violence and its Ocular Manifestations. Dr. Kosoko-Lasaki is associate vice president of health sciences and professor and chief of ophthalmology at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. She has practiced ophthalmology for 35 years. She will discuss a multi-specialty team approach to the treatment and prevention of domestic abuse – particularly in the case of ocular trauma.

LoAFMAn, Md, Mph, and sAntinA wheAt, Md, Mph, will co-present Integrated Medication Management: Moving Beyond Medication Reconciliation and e-Rx to Really Improve Clinical Outcomes and Avoid Adverse Drug Event. Dr. Loafman is an assistant professor at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, chief clinical integration officer at Norwegian American Hospital and co-chair of the National Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative, H.R.S.A. He specializes in family medicine and obstetrics and has been practicing for 21 years.

Dr. Wheat is a third year resident in the Northwestern-McGaw Family Medicine Residency in Chicago, IL. This presentation will describe a team-based care and systems approach used for high-risk inpatient units and complex service lines that has been used successfully in outpatient settings to bring chronic conditions under control.

Dr. Loafman and dorothY A. dschidA, Md, will co-present Preparing for Obstetrical Hemorrhage: Knowledge, Processes, Resources and Team Skill Development Needed to Prevent Avoidable Harm. Dr. Dschida is a third-year resident in the Northwestern-McGaw Family Medicine Residency in Chicago, IL. This presentation will provide an overview of an evidence-based educational program that has been developed to manage and prevent obstetrical hemorrhage.

Dr. Loafman and sheivA jAhAnbAn, Ms, will co-present Improving Perioperative Patient Safety Through a Standardized, Evidence-Based Process and a Medical Education Project Team. Ms. Jahanban is a fourth-year medical student at Ross University School of Medicine. This presentation will describe ways to make pre-operative care for patients safer and more effective.

LesLie MukAu, Md, FAAep, FAcep, will make two presentations. Dr. Mukau is chief of staff and attending emergency physician at El Centro Regional Medical Center in El Centro, CA. He has been practicing emergency medicine for 25 years. In Applying Lean Methodology and Current Best Practices to Emergency Department Operations: An Efficient Way to Improved Quality, Outcomes and Patient Safety, Dr. Mukau will explain how the application of Lean Methodology to healthcare can dramatically improve ED and hospital operations while boosting patient satisfaction scores. In Reducing Risk of Radiation Exposure from Computed Tomography: New Perspectives in Improving Patient Safety, he will discuss the rise in the use of diagnostic imaging procedures, cancer risks associated with these procedures, and strategies to reduce radiation exposure.

MArk pAstin, phd, will present Risk and Responsibility. Dr. Pastin is president of the Health Ethics Trust in Alexandria, VA. He has served as an ethics advisor worldwide since 1973. This presentation will help physicians define their specific roles in reducing risks to patients and advancing patient safety. This presentation includes samples of risk reduction strategies along with metrics that can be used to test the effectiveness of these strategies.

MAdonnA ringswALd, do, FAAiM, will present Teach-Back Method: Preventing Readmissions and Medication Errors. Dr. Ringswald is medical director of hospital medicine at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange, KY. Her specialties include internal medicine and hospital medicine. She has been practicing for 27 years. Dr. Ringswald’s presentation will give physicians a tool they can use to improve communication with patients, decrease medication errors, and reduce hospital readmissions.

wM. MAcMiLLAn rodneY, Md, will present Safety Guidelines for Office Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Sedation. Dr. Rodney is president and CEO of Medicos para la Familia, Memphis and Nashville. His 36 years of practice includes surgical family medicine obstetrics, emergency medicine, and medical mission hospitals. Dr. Rodney will discuss improvements in office anesthesia, regulations, ASA risk classification, and reimbursement.

dAnieL Y. wAng, Md, will present How Does Medical Board Investigate If Being Sued? Dr. Wang is a full-time emergency physician at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, CA, and a part-time emergency physician at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister, CA. He is also an expert reviewer for the Medical Board of California. He has been practicing emergency medicine for eight years. Dr. Wang’s presentation will provide an overview of the role of state medical boards in lawsuits brought against physicians.

registrAtion inForMAtionAll attendees MUST REGISTER for the 2013 House of Delegates and Annual Scientific Meeting in order to attend any sessions including business meetings, continuing medical education activities, and/or certification examination development workshops.

Every effort will be made to ensure that the published schedule, as stated in the brochures, will be followed. However, changes beyond AAPS control may occur. AAPS is not responsible for notifying registrants of program changes prior to the meeting.

CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION: A confirmation packet will be mailed within two (2) weeks of receipt of your registration form and PAID IN FULL registration fees. MEETING ATTENDANCE AND CANCELLATION POLICY: ALL PERSONS ATTENDING AAPS MEETINGS ARE REQUIRED TO REGISTER AND PAY THE APPROPRIATE REGISTRATION FEE IN ADVANCE REGARDLESS OF PURPOSE OR THE NUMBER OF MEETINGS ATTENDED.
