  • AS mentioned before our major foreign exchange earner in Guyana comes in the form of:

Bauxite and alumina, sugar, gold, rice, shrimp, molasses, rum, timber .

  • Only for emphasis : On November 10, 2011.

The Government of Guyana and Sandspring Resources a Ltd, a Canadian company, signed a 600.000000 investment Mineral Agreement for Gold and copper extraction.

It is expected to be fully operational in 2015 and would employ over 1000 persons and yield over 300,000 ounces of gold per annum.

The government would get 5%-8% Royalty on Gold and 1.5 % on copper ,with a 30% annual income tax on the company.

  • Apart from our traditional avenues for gaining foreign exchange, remittances are very important.

But of significance, in 2006 Guyana signed a pact with Norway. This will allow us to received in excess of 250 million US $ over a 5 year period.

The government is required to promote a Low Carbon Development Strategy.

Reduce Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) REDD

  • Our Economy exhibited moderate growth in recent years and this is based largely on agriculture and our extractive industries.

  • Agriculture is the most important sector of Guyanas economy.

It accounts for 36% of GDP, 30% of employment, and 40% of export earnings.

Sugar and rice, account for 74% of agricultures GDP as well as 65% of total agricultural exports.

Approximately 75% of Guyanas sugar production is exported to the EU.

  • In 2006 the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) provided a

loan to the government of Guyana for 21.9 million US Dollars.

This loan is for a 10 year period, intended to boost the countries agriculture diversification program (ADP).

Some of the programs objectives inter alia, are to : 1. Contribute to the export growth rate and reduce volatility

    2. Provide services and institution to sustainably increase in income derived from the export of non-traditional agriculture products 3. To enhance the protection of domestic customers from illness,

and domestic production from diseases and contamination.

  • The ADP is also designed to have 3 Sub-

Components: 1. Promote Private Sector entrepreneurship

    into agribusiness

    2. Improve capabilities of agribusiness export services; and

    3. Enhance business facilitation services within agriculture

  • Improve capabilities of agribusiness export services.

With a focus on institutional strengthening of public services needed to support the ADP.

A.) Support to technology development and transfer. B.) Animal and plant health, and food safety services. C.) Facilitation of foreign market access. D.) To identifying additional potential export chains.

  • GOALS

    OBJECTIVES

    AREAS OF WORK

    ACCOMPLISHMENT

    EXCHANGE NEEDS

  • In March of this year I made an application to participate in the USDA Scientific Exchange Program.

In July I received notification about my successful application to the USDA Program at WSU

I arrived in Pullman (WSU) on October 2, 2011 and quickly settled with guidance and support from my primary contact, Dr. Oumar Badini.

  • Goals

To determine microbiological, chemical and physical hazards associated with the production of pure ( natural or unpasteurized)honey.

To determine FDAs requirement for the exportation of value added honey to US markets.

  • Objective:

To design a HACCP plan for the production of pure honey in Guyana

    To conduct laboratory

analysis for pure honey (Moisture Content and HMF test)

    To attend Basic HACCP

Training Course, October 2011 To attend Good

Agricultural Practices (GAP), Food Safety Program, November 2011

    To attend the 31st Annual

Food Safety and Sanitation Work Shop Conference, November 2011.

  • I visited Des Monies Iowa

with fellow Borlaug Scholar Mr. Charles Diako and our advisor / host Dr. Oumarou Badini, to attend the 2011 World Food Prize.

Former Presidents, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Global Experts addressed the Conferences Theme

The Next Generation: Confronting the Hunger Challenges of Tomorrow

  • I had opportunity to participate in and attend many conferences and presentations on the conference Theme

Key to my learning experience was realizing that Science is Universal but Solutions are Local.

  • During the week of the World Food Prize, the USDA facilitated visits by Borlaug Fellows and other Officials to 4 key establishments in Iowa.

I was privileged to attend the unveiling of the new headquarters of the WFP Foundation (World Food Prize Hall of Laureates).

  • Highlighting the experience was taking part of the World Food Prize Award Ceremony .

In Iowa state Capital, where, President Kufuor (Ghana) and Da Silva (Brazil) were awarded.

  • DATACollection: This activity was

conducted in room 224 (my work station )in the School of Food Science Building at the WSU.

    Literature search on

    Honey progressed.

  • HONEY HACCP PLAN

    Under the guidance and support

of my mentors, Dr. Karen Killinger and Dr. Richard Dougherty.

I design a HACCP Plan for Raw (unpasteurized) Honey

This honey is produced by Rajkumar Apiaries and Honey Works, at Zeezight, West Coast, Berbice, Guyana, South America.

On my return to Guyana this Plan will be validated for subsequent.

  • Time did not allow me to conduct the HMF White method test for Honey.

However ,I was able to conduct both moisture content and aw for honey in the School of Food Science Laboratory at WSU.

  • HACCP-Training Ellensburg. Was exposed how to prepare in detail an HACCP Plan (Oct)

Farm Production Practices for Safe Foods: Good Agriculture Practices Workshop. (Nov)

  • On November 8-9, 2011 I attended the 31st Annual Food Safety & Sanitation Workshop & Exhibit Show.

I was privileged to be exposed to topics (http://ext.wsu.edu/foodsanitation/secondary/REGISTRATION.html ) and sessions that addressed basic sanitation as well as cutting edged issues related to food safety and sanitation.

    I cannot over state the

importance of the subject , The United States Food Safety Modernization Act .

  • We are going to link the WSU to provide extension services, with HACCP , GAP, GMP and Better Process Control School.

With Support from the USAID office Guyana and the USDA.

This support will be channeled via the GFDD (MOH) Guyana, for regulators, industries and other government agencies.

    Progress

  • Order of Priority This is for support directly for Guyanas Agriculture

diversification program. BETTER PROCESS Control School

    HACCP
