TITLE
This notebook contains work for Radionuclide Transport in both the saturated zone and - -
concerned with identification of key geochemical processes that may control radionuclide -
hydrochemistry and mineralogy along the groundwater flow paths from the proposed - repository. Typical activities associated with these investigatlons would include
I unsaturated zone (ISIs 20.06002.02.242 and 20.06002.01.232 respectively). RT is

PROJECT
Current experimental activities are fccused on laboratory batch sorption experiments that -~ incorporate materials (groundwater and sonic corings) from the Yucca Mountain region and materials (simulated groundwater) based on the chemistry of the Yucca Mountain region materials. The objective for the sorption experiment is to determine the sorption capability (Kd or sorption coefficient) for a particular radionuclide, solid material and solution typically over a range of pH values. Tasks typically include the following:

Internal analytical ‘Itpndardr’ ne submmed as Mind saw *in the saw group. No k m XRD Standards are aVallaMe for complex mineral assemblages. Pnnrious XRD a n a w l results ham been critically examinad for quality acceptance by inspedion of results of indudad prepared standards with a known n\inaralmmpwitionshnilarb~ expected in the u n k m samples. The internal standards m e prepared using mineral standards with known chemical composition that had also been independently snam using XRD. Qusntitative mineral content was avaluated by mixing measured mass fradbm of several knorm mineral phases to create a known internal standard and by using resulk of previous XRD results of complex mineral mixtures lo examine ratios of measured charadehtic peaks of phases. Fw thk group of u n k m samples. the expected mineral compoeitii of the is not consistent with the available mineral phases used to emate a k m krtsmal standard. lndusbn of standards with mineral composltii (fenomagnesian silicates) awpeded in the samples is highly desired. Therefom. a new basalt rack pwdw standard will be generated for use in evaluating the quality of the XRD analyses. Thk new standard is aeated by aust-dng a basalt rock sample and independently analyzhg its mineral composition by XRD. The independent XRD pattern of the basalt sample along with a separate previously analyred complex mineral bemlcal standard (NBS 99a -sodium feldspar) will then be used in the CIA aaeptance evaluation.
For this analysts. QA accaptance criteria indude:
1. lnspedion of XRD patterns of standards to insure identifmlion of maim minerals cwnprising the standards. The XRD patterns of the standards should be compared to independently or previously produced XRD patlerns to insure consistency in the major mineral charadeW Peak.
2. Qualitative agreemant of peak pmpwtions. Charactefistic peak he!ghts and peak ra th ot the major minerals (e.g.. divine) in the known standards in the Independent XRD patterns should be similar to those in the XRD patterns of the known slamlards provided by the suppbr.
3. Quantitative resub of mharal content of the NBS 99a standard should be within 5% (fa each phase) ofthe mineral content identifii in previous quantitative XRD analyses of NBS 99a
4. Bulk XRD rewlts for the unknown samples should be checked to ensure lhat the major minerals Mentifisd in the samples are condstent with the daracteristic mineral peaks r e p m t e d in the XRD pattern. Jade software at CNWRA shouM be used to load the nsw pattern pmvided by the supplier to facilitate this beck.

Sampk Prepration Samples submitted for whole-mck and clay-tiaction XRD m i d analyses M fm clesnad d obvious drilling contaminants and Ihm disaggregated in a mat.r and p e s k Appmximately fiw gram of each sample M transfcmd to isalnopyl alcohol and pulverized using a McCraPl micronizing mill. % rwul~ant powders uc dried, disaggmgatcd. and packed into aluminum sample holdas to produce random whok-rcrk mounts. A s e p ~ ~ t e split of each samph i~ dispersed in a dilute sodium phosphrce solution using a m i c probe. The suspensions are *a centrifugally size-fractionated to isolate clay-size (<4 micron ESD) materials for a sepsnte clay- fraction mount. The suspensions M then vacuumdeposiIed on silver mmhranc fillen I pmdufe oriented clay minml aggregates. Memhrane m n t s are attached to stainless steel r lup and exposed IO ethyletu glycol vapor for a minimum of 24 hours.
A u l y t i u l Roeedum XRD analyses of the samples m performed utilizing a Scintag or Philip automated poardr diffractomter equipped with a coppcr source (4OkV. 4OmA) and a d i d state or scintill.tioa detector. The whole ruck samples M analyzed over an angular range of 2-60 degrees 24heta u a swn rate of OM degrrelminute. The glycol-solvated clay-fraction m n t s are analyzed over M angular range of 2-50 degrees 2-theta at a rate of 1.5 degrecdminute.
Semiquantitative determinations of whole-rock and phylloailicate mincral amounts M' dom utilizing integrated peak press (derived from peakdecomposition I profile-fitting mehds) ud empirical reference intensity rauo (RIR) factors determined specifically for the diffractotma used in data collection. The toul clay mineral (including mica) abundmc of each sanlpb is duanined from the whole-mck XRD patterns using combined (001) and (hw] clay n i d d k c t i o n s and suimblc: empirical RIR factors.
XRD patterns from glycol-solvated clay-fraction samples are poalyzed using techniquea simila m thcw described above. Determinations of mixed-layer clay ordering and expandability m dom by comparing experimental diffraction dun from the glycol-solvated clay mineral aggregates with simulated one dimensional diffraction profiks generated using the program NEWMOD wrioar by R.C. Reynolds.

I T Objective: To characterize groundwater and collect aliquots for use in sorption
issues.
Samples: CNWRA personnel sampled a two wells (and two intervals per well) at the
experiments in the Yucca Mountain vicinity in order to investigate radionuclide transport
September 2007 sampling event. At the well, groundwater characterization will include field analyses of water temperature, air temperature, conductance, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, pH and alkalinity. Sample aliquots will be collected for

Procedure:
The primary source for pH, OW, conductivity and dissolved oxygen field data is the inline probe. The probe was calibrated (333/82-95) and for pH was idso challenged (33/82-95). Due to the slow flow rate the inline probe recorded data at two distinct time periods. The resulting measurements for pH, OW, conductivity and. DO for each time slice were recorded in the field notebook.
Groundwater samples were collected directly from the well line. The Millipore groundwater filter was attached directly to the well and the outflow lkom the filter was decanted into each of the sample bottles. Sample types, quantities and treatments for subsequent laboratory analyses are listed in Table 1. The groundwater for the alkalinity tritration was filtered before analyses.
The bottles for sample collection for subsequent lab analyses were not rinsed with sample before filling because they were certified. Preservation consisted of 2 mL of 1 : 1 nitric acid into 250 mL of solution. Samples were labeled, parafilmed, ziplocked, and placed in cooler.
