A. CENTRAL CHALLENGE • 240 POINTS

1. The Intent of the ChallengeTo solve this Challenge, the team will create and present a story about 1 or more characters on a secret mission. The team will research 2 sciences of hidden communication: Cryptography and Steganography. During the Presentation, the team will reveal the contents of 2 secret messages. One secret message,

the Pre-Crypted Message, will be designed by the team prior to the tournament. The other secret message, the Insta-Crypted Message, will be given to the team to encrypt and decrypt during the Presentation. The team’s Presen-tation will also include a Disguised Character and a team-created Gadget that performs a secret or unexpected task.

2. The StoryYour challenge is to tell a story about a secret mission. The secret mission could leave a small impression, or it could change the world.

a. The team will create and present a story about 1 or more characters on a secret mission. The story will include a Disguised Character, 2 secret messages and a team-created Gadget.

b. The secret mission may be any type of task or project that the character(s) seek to perform without others finding out. The story may be set in any location, real or imaginary, and during any time period. The story may feature any characters the team wishes, real or imaginary.

c. One character, the Disguised Character, must conceal its identity by being in disguise during a part of the Presentation. At some point during the Presentation, the Disguised Character must also portray its true identity. The Disguised Character’s identity may be concealed using costuming, props, dialogue, acting, or any other means the team chooses.

d. The team will earn points for the creativity of the story. (D.1.a) A story is more creative when there is original development of the storyline and characters.

e. The team will earn points for clear and effective storytelling. (D.1.b) Clear and effective storytelling means that the story has a beginning, middle and end, and is presented in a way that is easy to understand.

f. The team will earn points for the dramatic portrayal of the Disguised Character. (D.1.c) Dramatic portrayal refers to the theatrical style, method or manner used to represent the character in both disguised and undis-guised forms. This may include costuming, props, dialogue, acting, etc.

i. There may be more than one character in the story that uses a disguise, but only one may earn points for

D.1.c. On the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge, the team will identify and de-

scribe the Disguised Character that will earn points.

3. The Secret MessagesIf a group wants to keep their mission secret, it is important to communicate in a way that only they can understand. For instance, businesspeople encrypt important data and children sometimes speak in made-up languages. What creative methods will your team develop to hide its secret messages?

a. The team will research Cryptography and Steganography.

i. Cryptography is the science of creating and solving codes and ciphers. It is used to transmit secret informa-

tion by making a message confusing so that others do not understand it.

ii. Steganography is the science of concealing messages or information within common or non-secret things.

b. The team’s story will include 2 secret messages.

i. One secret message will be the Pre-Crypted Message. It will be designed and encrypted before the

tournament. The team will create the content of the Pre-Crypted Message. The content of the Pre-Crypted

Message must be decrypted and revealed during the Presentation and integrated into the story.

ii. The other secret message will be the Insta-Crypted Message. It will communicate a secret tournament-pro-

vided word or phrase that the team randomly selects just prior to the Presentation. The team will design

the methods for the Insta-Crypted Message before the tournament, and will encrypt and decrypt the

Insta-Crypted Message during the Presentation. See Section E for Special Tournament Procedures for the

Insta-Crypted Message.

c. Both secret messages will use Scientific Principles to encrypt and decrypt their content.

i. Each secret message must use Scientific Principles from Cryptography, Steganography, or a combination of

both. In addition to these principles, the team may include elements of other scientific fields such as

mathematics, computer science, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.

ii. The team must use different methods of encryption for the Pre-Crypted Message and the Insta-Crypted

Message. The team should describe, on the Tournament Data Form, the two methods of encryption and

how they are different.

d. The Pre-Crypted Message and the Insta-Crypted Message may be presented in any order.

4. The Pre-Crypted MessageHidden knowledge can be uncovered in surprising ways. You will keep the audience guessing as the characters in your story reveal the secret content of the Pre-Crypted Message.

a. The secret content of the Pre-Crypted Message will be team created. The secret content may be a message of any length and may be presented in any form.

b. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the Pre-Crypted Message and its secret content. The team should also describe the Cryptography and/or Steganography, as well as any other scientific methods, used to encrypt and decrypt the content of the Pre-Crypted Message.

c. The team will earn points for the creative use of Scientific Principles to encrypt and decrypt the content of the Pre-Crypted Message. (D.2.a) This may include any team-created devices or tools used to conceal and/or reveal the content of the message. This may also include any methods of secret communication that the team might have developed and/or creatively expanded from previously existing methods.

d. The team will earn points for the dramatic effect of revealing the Pre-Crypted Message’s content. (D.2.b) This score considers the theatrical and/or visual effect of how the team shows the process of decrypting the

Pre-Crypted Message and of how the team reveals the message’s content. The team should reveal the content of the Pre-Crypted Message in a way that is clearly observable from 25ft (7.62m) away.

e. The team will earn points for the integration of the Pre-Crypted Message into the story. (D.2.c) This means that both the process of decrypting the Pre-Crypted Message and the contents of the Pre-Crypted Message play a meaningful and important role in the story.

5. The Insta-Crypted MessageWhen working on a secret mission, it is important to think and act fast. During the Presentation, the team will demonstrate its quick encrypting and decrypting skills when one team member encrypts a message and the rest of the team decrypts it.

a. Prior to the tournament, the team will choose 1 team member to be the Encrypter. The Encrypter’s task will be to encrypt the Insta-Crypted Message during the Presentation for the rest of the team to decrypt. The En-crypter must not help the rest of the team decrypt the Insta-Crypted Message.

b. The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied message to encrypt and decrypt. The message for an Elementary Level team will be 1 word. The message for a Middle Level team will be a 2-word phrase. The message for a Secondary or University Level team will be a 3-word phrase. Some example messages that could be selected at the tournament are “trumpet,” “dark hallway,” and “jumping over puddles.” See Section E for Special Tournament Procedures for the Insta-Crypted Message.

c. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the Cryptography and/or Steganography, as well as any other scientific methods they plan to use to encrypt and decrypt the Insta-Crypted Message and how these are different from the methods used for the Pre-Crypted Message.

d. The team will earn points for successfully decrypting the Insta-Crypted Message. (D.3.a) This means that the decrypted word or phrase matches the original word or phrase given to the Encrypter.

e. The team will earn points for the creative use of Scientific Principles used to encrypt and decrypt the Ins-ta-Crypted Message. (D.3.b) This may include any team-created devices or tools used to conceal and/or reveal the message. This may also include any methods of secret communication that the team might have devel-oped and/or creatively expanded from previously existing methods. The methods used to encrypt and decrypt the Insta-Crypted Message must be different from methods used in the Pre-Crypted Message. If the team uses very similar methods for the 2 secret messages, it may receive lower scores for D.3.b.

6. The GadgetClever tools and devices are essential for carrying out a secret mission. To keep others from discovering their secret purpose, gadgets are often disguised as common items such as a phone hidden in a shoe or a hat with helicopter propellers. Here is your chance to create the gadget of your imagination!

a. The team’s Presentation will include a Gadget that seems to be a commonplace or everyday item and that performs or appears to perform a secret or unexpected task.

b. The Gadget must operate using Technical Methods during the Presentation. Technical Methods refers to the use of principles in fields such as chemistry, computer science, electricity, hydraulics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, or structural engineering. Other technical fields are also acceptable.

c. The team may design the Gadget to perform its actual secret task using Technical Methods. Or the team may design the Gadget to use Technical Methods to produce a theatrical effect that makes it appear that the Gadget has performed its secret task. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the Gadget’s secret task and the Technical Methods used during the Presentation in the Gadget’s operation.

d. The team will earn points for the creative integration of the Gadget into the story. (D.4.a) This includes the role of the Gadget as it appears as a commonplace or everyday item in the story.

e. The team will earn points for the Technical Design of the Gadget’s construction and operation. (D.4.b) Techni-cal Design is the plan for carrying out or accomplishing a task. A well-designed Gadget shows careful planning and can be demonstrated using effective, efficient, and reliable Technical Methods.

f. The team will earn points for the Technical Innovation of the Gadget’s construction and operation. (D.4.c) Technical Innovation is a new, unique or creative way to carry out or accomplish a task using Technical Methods.

g. The Gadget must be a team-created or team-modified object. If the team makes modifications that are simply decorative to a commercially-made object, it will receive low scores for Technical Design and Innovation. (D.4.b and D.4.c)

h. The team will earn points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design based on all Technical Methods actually used or attempted during the Presentation to operate the Gadget. If the team attempts to operate the Gadget and is not successful, the team may still earn points for the Technical Innovation and the Technical Design of the methods used in the attempt to operate the Gadget. The team’s score for Technical Design may be affected. (D.4.b and D.4.c)

7 . Team Identification SignThe team should provide a free-standing Identification Sign (ID Sign) of approximately 2ft x 3ft (0.6m x 0.9m) displaying the team’s Team Name, Team Number, School/Organization (if different from Team Name), and Level. It cannot be used as a scoring element. See “Team Identification Sign” section in Rules of the Road for further information.

B. TEAM CHOICE ELEMENTS • 60 POINTS

In addition to the above requirements, the team must present TWO creations called “Team Choice Elements” that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. The team may create anything it wishes for Team Choice Elements including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical actions, etc.

1. The team must present both Team Choice Elements as part of the 8-minute Presentation and each Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to the team’s Central Challenge solution. Each Team Choice Element must be described briefly on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge.

2. A Team Choice Element may not be a specific item that is required in the Central Challenge that is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identified and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road.

3. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for the creativity and originality of the Team Choice Element, for the quality, workmanship, or effort that is evident, and for the integration into the Presentation. Evaluation of Team Choice Elements is subjective.

C. PRESENTATION AREA

1. Floor Surface: Destination Imagination strongly suggests that the Presentation Area be a large space with a hard floor such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very short-napped carpet. The team should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces.

2. Area Size: The minimum required overall size of the Presentation Area is 8ft x 10ft (2.44m x 3.05m) for all tournaments. The minimum required size of the Launch Area is 4ft x 4ft (1.22m x 1.22m). The Drop Box is 1ft x 1ft (30.5cm x 30.5cm), and will be in a corner of the Launch Area, adjacent to the Presentation Area, and nearest the audience. The team may use any additional space that tournament officials designate as available, but the team should be prepared to present its solution in the minimum space.

3. Electrical Power: A single 3-prong electrical outlet will be provided at the edge of each Presentation Area for the team’s use.

EXAMPLE LAYOUT OF A PRESENTATION SITE:

Note that the actual layout will vary from tournament to tournament. The Launch Area may be either to the right or to the left of the Presentation Area. The Drop Box will be in a corner of the Launch Area adjacent to the Presentation Area. The team may check with the Tournament Director for the exact layout.

E. SPECIAL TOURNAMENT PROCEDURES FOR THE INSTA-CRYPTED MESSAGE1. In the Prep Area, one team member will randomly select a closed envelope containing the secret word or

phrase that is to be used as the Insta-Crypted Message. The team member will give the envelope to the Prep Area Appraiser without opening it.

2. In the Prep Area, the team will identify which team member is the Encrypter.

3. Before the team’s 8-minute Presentation begins, an Appraiser will place the team-selected closed envelope containing the secret word or phrase in the Drop Box. The Drop Box is a 1ft x 1ft (30.5cm x 30.5cm) taped square on the floor of the Launch Area, adjacent to the Presentation Area, and nearest the audience. (See Section C for details about the Presentation Area.)

4. The Encrypter may retrieve the closed envelope from the Drop Box at any point during the 8-minute Presentation. Once the Encrypter retrieves the closed envelope, the Encrypter must move to the Launch Area. The Encrypter will then open the envelope and begin encrypting the secret word or phrase to create the Insta-Crypted Message. Once the Encrypter opens the envelope, the Encrypter must remain in the Launch Area while he or she encrypts the Insta-Crypted Message.

5. The Encrypter may use any research, props, or materials to encrypt the Insta-Crypted Message. The Encrypter must be visible to the Appraisers throughout the encryption process. Once the message has been encrypted, the Encrypter should return the original message to the envelope. The Encrypter will indicate in one of two ways that the message is ready to be transmitted.

a. If the message is encrypted in a written or physical form, the Encrypter will place the encrypted message in the area of the Drop Box.

b. If the Encrypter intends to communicate the encrypted message using sight, speech, or sound, he or she must stand in the Drop Box to transmit the encrypted message.

6. Once the Encrypter places the written or physical form of the Insta-Crypted Message in the area of the Drop Box and/or begins to communicate the Insta-Crypted Message, the other team members may begin to decrypt it. They may use props or materials to do so, but they must not reuse any of the exact same props or materials that the Encrypter used to create the message. While team members work to decrypt the message, the team may also continue to present the story to the audience.

7. The Encrypter must not help the other team members decrypt the Insta-Crypted Message. However, while the team is decrypting the message, the Encrypter may continue to be involved in the Presentation. If the Encrypter assists in decrypting the Insta-Encrypted Message, the team will earn zero points for decrypting the message. (D.3.a) The team will also receive an Illegal Procedure deduction for D.3.b.

8. When the team members have decrypted the message, they must clearly write the decrypted word or phrase on a team-provided sheet of paper and place it in the Drop Box. After the Presentation, an Appraiser will retrieve the paper from the Drop Box to check that the message was correctly decrypted.
