INTRODUCTION

A scintillometer survey was conducted on July 31, 1976 on Noranda's Paw Creek 1-76 property. The survey was initiated to

outline the extent of uraniferous occurrences known to exist on

the property. The author was assisted by G. Heavysege; senior

geological assistant, B. Jose and M.J. Murray, junior geological assistants.

A grid was flagged and chained over the surveyed portion of the property at the time of the survey. Four contiguous, unpat- ented mining claims were surveyed these being:

L OCA TI ON AND ACC Bj3S

Paw Lake is centered at 52 O 45'N latitude and 94 O 00"W longitude, 208km north of Red Lake, Ontario. Float or ski equipped aircraft is the most practical means of reaching the lake but a navigable water route does exist between Deer Lake via the Severn River and a river flowing south out of Paw Lake.

The property lies 1,6km east of Paw Lake and can be reached by a creek 0.5km to the north.

Reconnaissance traverses carried out during July, 1976 as a result of a Kenting radiometric airborne survey in 1975 resulted in the staking of four claims. A ground scintillometer survey was conducted after the staking. Trenching operations followed and 11 additional claims were staked enlarging the property to 15 contiguous claims.

No other work by any company is known in this area.

Page 3: SCINT SUR PAW CREEK 1-76€¦ · S C IN T l LLOMETE R J5 U RVETY METHOD Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 were used for the survey. All readings were taken at a height of 1m

GENERAL

All rock on and surrounding the property is granitic in com

position. The area is part of the Berens River subprovince of

the Canadian Shield and is Archean in age.

Pink granite aplite banded with white granite pegmatite are

the main targets for exploration. High scintillometer readings

and heavy uranophane stain are associated with these phases.

These two phases are distinctly banded at 110 along which most

of the uranium mineralization occurs.

White to grey weathering granodiorite-trondhjenite comprises

the bulk of the rock and is non-radioactive. Minor phases within

this rock type include xenolithic granodiorite and hybrid

equivalents.

It appears that the uranium mineralization and granite fol

low a subsidiary break sub-parallel to the Bearhead Break and

may be related to a separate and distinct intrusive phase.

METHOD

Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 were used for the

survey. All readings were taken at a height of 1m above the ground

surface and notations were made at each station on the type of

terrain present (i.e. swamp, outcrop or overburden).

.Chained and flagged lines trending north-south were established

for the purposes of the survey. A total of 5.33km of line was

surveyed with 203 readings taken.

For the purposes of this survey any reading greater than

100 cps is considered to be significant.

RESULTS

A large zone of continuous radioactivity was mapped from

LOO, 270S to L740E, 660S at a trend of 115O . Intensities of

200cps are common along with heavy uranophane staining in this

anomalous zone.

The zone is continuous and extends off the surveyed farea both

to the east and west. The zone is on strike with the Paw Lake 1-75

Page 4: SCINT SUR PAW CREEK 1-76€¦ · S C IN T l LLOMETE R J5 U RVETY METHOD Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 were used for the survey. All readings were taken at a height of 1m

although the latter is approximately 7km to the north

west.

RK COMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

The radioactive zone outlined by the survey has been trenched

with good results. In order to test this zone at depth a diamond

drill hole on L120E, BOOS at an azimuth of 180O , dip 45O to a

depth of 500 feet is recommended. Further work should be

contingent on the results of the drill hole.

Respectfully submitted,

GEOPHYSICAL REPORT

S CIN TILLOMETER SURVEY PAW CREEK 1-76

INTRODUC^ON

A scintillometer survey was conducted on a flagged grid during the period July 1st to July 10th, 1977. The survey was initiated to outline the extensions of uraniferous occurrences known to exist on four adjoining claims held by the company. The author was assisted by D. McNeil, junior geological assistant.

Eleven unpatented mining claims, contiguous with the original four claims were surveyed. These surveyed claims were:

To the west of the original claims:

KRL.457698 KRL.457702

KRL.457699 KRL.457703

KRL.457700 KRL.457704

KRL.457701 KRL.457705

and to the east of the original four claims:KRL.457695

KRL.457696

KRL.457697

These claims were recorded August 24, 1976.

The following report is supplementary to a report by B. Berger (Paw Creek 1-76) .

LOCATION

Paw Lake is centered at 52Q45'N latitude and 94O00'W longitude, 208 km. north of Red Lake, Ontario. Float or ski-equipped aircraft is the most practical means of reaching the lake, but a canoe route exists from Deer Lake via the Severn River and a river flowing south out of Paw Lake. The north west corner of the property lies 70 meters south of the southeast shore of Paw Lake and the northern boundary extends eastwards for 3.6 km. The eastern claims are reached via a creek flowing to the north of the claim group. This creek bisects the most easterly claim.

PRE VIOUS^ WO RK

Reconnaissance traverses carried out during July, 1976

Page 7: SCINT SUR PAW CREEK 1-76€¦ · S C IN T l LLOMETE R J5 U RVETY METHOD Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 were used for the survey. All readings were taken at a height of 1m

result of Renting radiometric airborne survey done in 1975,

showed the presence of uranium staining and, as a result four

claims were staked. A ground scintillometer survey was conducted

after the staking, and trenching operations followed. Eleven

additional claims were staked in early August of 1976, enlarging

the property to fifteen contiguous claims.

No work by any other company is known in this immediate area.

All bedrock on and surrounding the property is granitic in

composition. The area is part of the Berens River subprovince

of the Canadian Shield and the rocks are Archean in age.

Pink granite aplite associated with white granitic pegmatite,

are the main targets of exploration. High scintillometer readings

are associated with these phases and the heavy uranophane staining

appears to be restricted to the aplitic granites. These phases are

distinctly banded at 110O in the west and 90O in the east. Dip is

unknown .

White to grey weathering granite comprises the bulk of the

outcrop and was found to be non-radioactive. Minor phases within

this rock type include xenolithic granodiorite and hybrid equivalents,

The uranium mineralization and granite may according to Berger

(1976) , follow a subsidiary break which lies sub-parallel to the

Bearhead Break and may be related to a separate and distinct

intrusive phase.

SC IN T I LLOMETER SURVEY

Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 was used for the

survey. All readings were taken at a height of one meter above the

ground surface and notes were made of the type of terrain present

at each station, (ie. swamp, outcrop, overburden)

Chained and flagged lines trending north-south were established

for the purpose of the survey. The lines were spaced at 120 meters

apart, and stations were marked at 30 meter intervals. A total of

15.2 km. of line was surveyed with 526 scintillometer readings taken.

Two test lines were run over the original four claim group as a check

Page 8: SCINT SUR PAW CREEK 1-76€¦ · S C IN T l LLOMETE R J5 U RVETY METHOD Exploranium scintillometer model GRS-101 were used for the survey. All readings were taken at a height of 1m

instrument operation and background readings and to tie the two

surveys together.

RESULTS

The west eight claims had two main zones of anomalous

radioactivity. The largest extends from line 240E at 780N to

line 600E at GOON. Readings of 140 cps. were common and readings

as high as 170 cps. were recorded.

In the east three claims, no anomalous readings were found,

however three small areas of uranophane staining were located on

outcrop. The individual zones strike at 90O and are en echelon

at a direction of 65 .

Reconnaissance traverses off the property located uranophane

staining close to the south property boundary. However, in general,

intensity of readings decreased away from the property. A traverse

to the east south-east indicated no uranium staining or radiometric

anomalies.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

The anomalous areas in the west eight claims are significant.

Anomalous scintillometer readings in conjunction with uranophane

staining, warrant further examination of the area. Two diamond

drill holes are recommended as follows:

1) Line 960 20S Azimuth Oo dip 45O depth 125m.

2) Line 600 660N Azimuth 180O dip 45O depth 170m.

It is also recommended that an additional nine claims be

staked to the south of the property to cover significant uranophane

staining.

Further work on the property should be contingent on the results

of the two drill holes.

Respectfully submitted,

B.C. Shultz, Senior Mapper, Northwestern Ontario Division.
