SCORING CLINIC PREFACE This is a tutorial created to assist junior

volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures.

Text describing events on the court will appear first.

A score sheet will show how to score these events.

Page 3: SCORING CLINIC PREFACE This is a tutorial created to assist junior volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures

This presentation is the overall process of scoring a match, expectations, & how to guide the score keeper.

SCORING CLINIC PREFACE

It is very common in club volleyball for refereeing (work) team to need to supply up to six players to help with the match: two-line judges (with or without flags), one person to flip the score board, one person to track the Liberoes using the Libero control sheet, one person to keep the official score using score keeper’s sheets, and sometimes a down-ref or R2 (w/ whistle).

Score-keeping, Libero tracking, and line judging will be covered by this presentation.

Page 4: SCORING CLINIC PREFACE This is a tutorial created to assist junior volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures

SCORING CLINIC PREFACE Supplies needed: To practice score- keeping, have

blank score sheet(s), a blank Libero control sheet, a black (or blue) pen, and a pencil at hand.

The objective is to learn the proper procedures for recording events that occur during the match and better prepare you for real life score keeping and Libero tracking.

The more you practice, the better (and more comfortable you’ll become).

Page 5: SCORING CLINIC PREFACE This is a tutorial created to assist junior volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures

SCORING CLINIC PREFACEThe score sheet used in this clinic reflects

the current model being used by SCVA/ USA Volleyball.

However, if a referee requires special notation on a score-sheet, the score keeper should follow the direction of the referee.

Never hesitate to ask the down referee a question (before a set begins or at time-outs).

Page 6: SCORING CLINIC PREFACE This is a tutorial created to assist junior volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures

When the starting Libero replaces a player, write L next to the exiting player.

If the second Libero replaces the starting Libero, write R next to L.

Remember: The SAME player must replace the Libero as the Libero replaced first. (the number replacing the Libero must match that of the player that the Libero replaced).

Enter the Libero number(s) in the Libero box and the starting players’ numbers in the SP Column.

Set 2: Use the bottom portion of the score sheet in a similar fashion to score-keep for Set #2.

Notice: Team A and Team B have switched sides on the score sheet to reflect their new orientation on the court.

Notice: In the example, the two teams kept their same starting players, but have modified their service order by one rotation (reflected on the teams line-up sheet).

•Set 3: (if necessary): Uses a separate score sheet and is done a little differently.

•Note: If there is a title block on this form, it is filled out the same way as the form containing Sets 1 and 2 (if there is no title block, skip it).

Set 3: (if necessary): Uses a separate score sheet & is done a little differently.

- Enter team A’s line-up on both the far left and on the far right of the deciding (3rd) set score sheet.

- Team B’s lineup will go in the center area.

- Team A will be serving first. Mark the 3 X’s for which team will be serving, serve receiving, and for Service Box 1 for serve receive position I. The set starts at 08:55am.

- Use the first two columns to keep track of the score until one of the team’s scores their 8 th point.

- Upon the 8th point being scored (for either team), the teams switch sides of the court and the score keeper now uses the last two columns. They will continue to use the middle column for Team B, but will switch to using the third column for Team A.

- For example: if Team A reached the 8th point first, you’d write an 8 in the circle.

8 A

- The score keeper starts slashing points in column 3 for Team A now (in this example starting with point 9 (leave first 8 points blank).

Whatever score Team A has earned at the switch of sides, is recorded in the “At Chg” circle.”

Set 3: (if necessary): Uses a separate score sheet & is done a little differently.

Note: In the following example, #7 of Team A is serving for the 8th point. Check the service round for player #7 on the far left. Upon Team A winning the 8th point, you move over to the last column. Write team A’s score at the change of sides in the “At Chg” circle on the right.

Repeat the player before #7 (#8’s) exit score (no exit score is recorded on the far left for player #7). Player #7’s exit score [only] will be recorded on the far right.

Note: If Team B would have won the 8th point first, you would record whatever score Team A had earned in the “At Chg” circle and no tic mark or exit score would be recorded on the left.

Set 3: (if necessary): Uses a separate score sheet & is done a little differently.

4 6 6 10

Finish recording the remainder of Team A’s points on the far right. Team B will remain in the middle column for the entire set. Finish scoring set 3 using the same notation as sets 1 and 2.

REMEMBER The Official Scorer is part of the team with the R1, R2,

Libero Tracker, and Line Judges.

The score on the official score sheet is always considered to be the correct score!

If there is a discrepancy and the R1 or R2 has definite knowledge, the score sheet may be adjusted. If the issue cannot be resolved, the official score sheet is the final answer.

The scorer shouldn’t hesitate to ask the R1/R2 for help if/when it is needed – any issues need to be fixed while they are small and still manageable.

Tips to being a successful line judge:

1. Pay attention to the game: As Line Judge, you are an important part of the refereeing team. Treat this responsibly with respect.

2. You have the best view: Never be afraid to make a strong call or close call. You are looking at things from a different point of view than the Head Referee or anyone else.

3. Make your call quickly and without hesitation: Call them as YOU see them. Never look to a team’s bench or the stands before making a call. That looks like you were not sure or you’re looking to see what someone else wants you to call it.

4. Always be honest and judge with integrity: Never lie or make calls to benefit one team or the other. Honor the game of volleyball by always being truthful in your calls, no matter the situation or circumstance. NEVER LET THE CROWD OR AN OPOSING TEAM INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION.

5. Don’t be embarrased if you didn’t see a call: If you missed the play (embarrassing, but still you need to admit it to the HEAD OFFICIAL)

6. Get low to see the ball hit the line: Remember that the volleyball is round and only a small portion actually touches the ground. This small portion must touch some part of the line in order to be IN the court. Thus, it is helpful to be low to the ground when making a close call so that you can see more of the underside of the ball.

7. Have fun: Enjoy yourself, you have one of the best views!
