What is the SunMast™?

The Scotia SunMast™ is a solar-powered outdoor lighting column designed to help cities and businesses achieve the environmental goal of zero-emission street lighting.

The SunMast™ uses PV solar cells integrated in the body of the mast to generate renewable energy and provide a source of revenue to offset the cost of electricity. The system supplies power to the grid during the day and imports what it needs at night, creating the potential for zero-energy lighting or a net energy gain.

Connected to the grid, the Scotia SunMast™ is the only solar lighting solution suitable for illuminating roads and highways in line with European norms and regulations.

Power station by day.

Electricity grid

Daylight strikes the photovoltaic cells and is converted to electricity.

An inverter in the base of the mast converts the electricity from DC to AC for export to the grid.

There are no batteries – all power is exported.

The SunMast™ uses a new type of PV solar cell especially developed for lower-light applications and integration into vertical structures. The cells don’t require direct sunlight and are designed to work well under cloud cover.

Even in the UK and Northern Europe, a SunMast™ has the potential to produce more energy than it requires for lighting.

Electricity grid

Power for lighting is imported from the grid in the normal way.

Street light by night.

Why not use batteries? The SunMast™ doesn’t use batteries because of the demand for a fail-safe and compliant road lighting solution. Battery-powered systems struggle to store enough power to keep a street light running through the night, and require regular replacement since they have a limited lifetime. By connecting to the grid, the SunMast™ overcomes the challenge of storing power and ensures reliable operation throughout the night.

A grid-connected system is essentially two different systems with no direct connection between the PV panels and the lighting components. None of the power generated by the SunMast™ is used by the light source directly.

Bella Center P5 Car Park, Copenhagen.

Scotia put its solar-powered outdoor lighting columns under the scrutiny of some of the world’s leading environmentalists at the Copenhagen Climate Conference, to demonstrate the feasibility of emissions-free lighting even at northern latitudes.

The project was conceived to support the Bella Center in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint in the run up to the UN climate conference, held in Copenhagen December 2009. The goal was to provide Scandinavia’s largest conference centre with an attractive, well-lit outdoor environment – but without contributing any carbon emissions.

A total of 7 SunMast™ WP480s were used each able to generate 251 kWh per year and !tted with two 60W LED luminaires. The result is a fully compliant lighting system that generates more power than it consumes with a reduction in CO2 emissions of 1 tonne per year.

Frequently asked questions.

Does it work in cloud or low light conditions? Yes. The cells in the masts are a new kind of low-light sensitive PV cells that don’t require direct sunlight, and in fact work well under cloud cover. It is possible for a SunMast™ to generate all the energy needs of a streetlight – even in northern Europe.

Does the system require batteries? No, the system is connected to the national power grid. At night, when the cells in the mast are not generating energy, electricity is bought from the utility company in the normal way. By day, all energy is exported and sold to the grid.

How often do the solar panels need cleaning? Due to the vertical positioning of the panels, normal rainfall prevents the accumulation of dirt and debris.

Why not use batteries? We have opted not to use batteries because of the demand for a fail-safe and compliant road lighting solution. Battery-powered systems struggle to store enough power to keep a street light running through the night, and require regular replacement since they have a limited lifetime. By connecting to the grid, the SunMast™ overcomes the challenge of storing power and ensures reliable operation throughout the night.

Do the solar panels actually power the lights? No. A grid-connected system is essentially two different systems. There is no direct connection between the PV system and the lamp. None of the energy generated is directly used by the light source.

Can power be generated by the east and west faces? Yes. Situated for example in London, the east and west faces each produce around 75% of the south face, so combined, the east and west faces generate 50% more energy than the south face alone.

What sort of projects are suitable for SunMast™ installations? The SunMast™ is intended for use on roads and highways. The most important aspect to consider is the location of the site. Solar masts must receive as much light as possible. The best location for solar PV is in exposed areas. Shadows cast by trees and neighbouring buildings must be avoided.

Can the mast generate more electricity than the lamp requires? It depends. The electricity produced by the solar cells is a way of compensating for the electricity that the lamp consumes. Whether it does so partially or completely depends on the application and what steps are taken to minimize energy consumption. But with the right use of lamps and controls, it is quite possible to achieve a net gain of electricity.

Is the SunMast™ complicated to install? No, the SunMast™ is installed in the same way as other non-solar lighting masts. And electrical installation follows the same procedure as other solar installations.

How long can I earn money on a SunMast™ system? A FiT period is guaranteed for a period of up to 25 years in most countries.

Does the streetlight conform to road norms and standards? Yes. The SunMast™ is tested against EN40 norms for metal masts in Europe.

Will it work in winter? Yes. The vertical placement of PV panels is adapted to low altitude sunlight, and even if there are only a few hours of daylight in the wintertime, the mast will still produce energy.

How much electricity will a mast generate? The exact amount varies according to the height of the mast as well as factors such as latitude, orientation, weather, ambient temperature and even the proximity of reflective materials such as water, glass or snow. Scotia provides detailed analysis for projects in your area.

Will it work in any environment? The mast is designed to function in all weathers including temperatures of up to 60°C. Wind loading issues are avoided by integrating the PVs into a streamlined vertical design, with no top-mounted panels. The system is IP66 rated and protected against impact and abrasion.

How can I earn money on exporting electricity? Earning money on solar electricity is structured differently from country to country. In Europe a much used system is the feed-in tariff (FiT) system where producers of solar electricity are guaranteed a fixed price per kWh of electricity fed back into the grid under a multiyear contract.

As the masts are connected to the grid wouldn’t it be better to centralise the PVs in a single solar installation? That is an option, but by adding PV systems to light columns we make use of structures which are already in place. The lighting columns serve a double purpose. In this way, installation costs are kept to a minimum. You could call a SunMast™ a distributed small scale BIPV system.

Is it profitable? How much more expensive is a SunMast™ than a conventional mast? A SunMast™ is about double the price of a conventional streetlight. However, the SunMast™ allows you to benefit from feed-in tariffs. That means the PV system can pay for itself within 8-15 years depending on which country the system is installed. The remaining part of the FiT period will provide profits that will go towards the cost of the streetlight itself. And, by adding lighting controls to the system, further savings can be made on the electricity consumption benefitting the overall system economy.

Don’t PV systems generate less energy than was used for their production? No. This is a myth. After approximately 1.5 to 3 years, a PV system will have generated as much energy as was needed to produce and install all its components. Over a PV system’s lifetime of more than 30 years, it will produce far more energy than was used to create it.

How is the mast protected against vandalism? The bottom 2m of the SunMast™ are without panels to protect them from graffiti. All solar panels are laminated with toughened safety glass and are designed to withstand mechanical impact in accordance with the requirements of EN/IEC 61215 and EN/IEC 62262 IK08. To avoid theft, the panels are glued to the mast and cannot be removed without using special tools.
