HELLO FELLOW FILM FANS Welcome to this year’s Discovery Film Festival – a festival programmed for and by young people. Over the past few months we have been carefully selecting films from around the world that we believe will resonate with the youth of today and we hope that there is something for everyone. Each one of us has brought our own personal flair to the planning process and we’re looking forward to helping out during the festival itself – all that’s missing now is you! We hope you really enjoy the festival this year!

Rowan and Šean on behalf of Adam, Erasmus, Fin, Jess, Jude, Max, Molly, Rebecca, Tara and Theodore

We’re always looking for young people to get involved with Discovery Film Festival and other film activities year-round at DCA. If you’d be interested in joining our gang, learning more about film and helping to make the festival even better, we want to hear from you! If you’re aged 15—19 and love film – it doesn’t matter if it’s the latest blockbusters or the artiest art house, as long as you’re up for new things – email Mike for more info: [email protected]

“If I could have anyone direct a documentary of my life it would be Taika Waititi – and I’d like Jemaine

Clement to play me, please.” (Rowan)

“Local Hero is one of those films that still resonates today – the

idea of American exploitation in Scotland. The scene that stands

out is when two men stand watching the aurora borealis – it’s so refreshing to see them take a

break from business to spend some communal time admiring the land,

the environment.” (Erasmus)

“Gaear Grimsrud and Amy Dunne are my favourite villains. Her sneakiness

and his silence. Imagine them in a film together!” (Tara)

“My favorite sequence in all of film is Ash’s battle with his own hand in Evil Dead II – he runs the gauntlet, fighting his own hand,

lopping it off and fighting it again! Pure horror comedy perfection.”

(Theodore)

“In my opinion Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle is the greatest movie performance of all time. ‘Are you

talking to me?’” (Adam)

“There should be more musical horror films!” (Max)

“I’d love to spend a week at the hotel in Youth. It struck me as a place

where the quirks and tales of the characters were equally as beautiful as the setting and provided a whole

new perspective on the well-trodden, ‘coming of age’ concept.” (Molly)

“Sleeping Giant has the same thrill and excitement as any other “summer camp” movie, but with a certain depth

and poignancy that makes it really individual” (Šean)

“Jake Gyllenhaal deserved an Oscar for Nightcrawler.

Just saying.” (Rebecca)

“I don’t think any of us are normal people” – Wes Anderson (Jude)

“Watching Memento a second time was so much more confusing

than the first.” (Fin)

“Everyone on the planet has something to gain from watching

more film” (Jess)

OPENING GALAAGE8+

Ten year-old Pari and her 8 year-old brother Chotu live in a picturesque village nestled among the sand dunes in North-West India. Chotu is blind, yet he is anything but sad. Happy, precocious and always ready with a funny remark, he is the life and soul of the village with Pari as his eyes, his guide and his best friend. Pari has promised Chotu that he will be able to see by the time he turns 9 and, as always, Chotu believes her unconditionally. When their family proves unable to fund the required operation, Pari turns to an unlikely source of support – Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood’s biggest and brightest star. When Pari hears that the actor is making a film some 300 kilometres from their village, she determines to take Chotu to find him and together they set out on a journey that will change their lives forever.

What unfolds is a magical journey during which the two children meet a host of colourful characters. Some will help, and some will try to stop them – but throughout it all the audience enjoy the inevitable questions: will they make it? What will Shah Rukh Khan say? Can Chotu regain his eyesight? Does fortune really favour the bold? Infectiously charming, this heartwarming fairytale of an adventure has been feted at film festivals around the world, and we’re delighted to be able to bring this irresistible slice of colourful Rajasthani magic to Tayside for its first ever screening in Scotland.

Our Discovery-curated collections of short films for younger audiences are always a highlight of the festival, and enjoy great success at partner venues across the country throughout the rest of the year. We’re sure 2016 will be no different, with these little gems from around the world, including Germany, France, Switzerland, Hungary and the USA.

There’s a little mouse quietly obsessed with cleanliness, a thrilling high-speed chase through the streets of a French port (on tricycles!) and a reindeer faced with endless avalanches that keep burying his little cabin in the woods. An adventurous tree emerges from the forest sporting a very fetching pair of wellies, a cartoon cat and dog erase their differences and some pitch-perfect piggies go the whole hog...

All these short films are in English or are dialogue free, except one where French is spoken but the storytelling is superbly visual. All the films will be accessible for everyone.

These magical tales will delight children age 3+ and are a colourful introduction to the cinema experience.

Shorts for Middle OnesSun 23 October, 11:45 / Sat 29 October, 11:45 / Sun 6 November, 11:45

Variety is once again the key word in this collection of short films for those aged 8 or older, which present some very different aspects of the world in which we live – challenging, mystical, celebratory, inquiring and fun.

There is the story of a little boy whose lifelong dream of living in the sea with his fishy friends is rewarded through persistence, technical experimentation and the art of beachcombing. An Australian-Japanese family learn to cope with their differences through ingenious edible artworks. We have a cautionary tale for anyone who has moments of uncertainty, plus we learn why taking selfies whilst visiting a new planet isn’t always a good idea...

Most of these films are dialogue free, proving words aren’t always necessary when telling exquisite stories. However, in one film subtitles are used to assist those of us whose Japanese language skills are minimal. Or non-existent.

My RevolutionMA RÉVOLUTIONSun 23 October, 11:00

With the Arab Spring blossoming, in the heart of Paris people take to the streets to show their support. But not 14 year-old Marwann. Despite his Tunisian roots, Marwann is too preoccupied with adolescence – getting his parents off his back, becoming popular at school, and impressing his crush, Sygrid. But when a picture of him ends up on the cover of the biggest newspaper in France he accidentally becomes the face of the Arab Spring. He’s instantly branded as a revolutionary hero and the ‘cool kid’ at his school. To win over Sygrid, Marwann embraces his newfound identity, only to find himself on a journey of self-discovery, first love, and maybe even an actual connection with his roots.

My Revolution really does offer a new twist on the coming-of-age story, where our hero not only chases the girl but also comes to terms with a whole new understanding of contemporary political engagement.

My Revolution is screening in DCA’s weekly Cine Sundays slot, so you can get your cinema ticket, a pre-screening hot drink and breakfast roll all for £7. Alternatively, festival prices still apply!

SAT 29 OCTOBER

Long Way NorthTOUT EN HAUT DU MONDESat 29 October, 11:00

Set in 1882, this is the story of 15 year-old Russian princess Sasha. When her explorer grandfather Oloukine mysteriously goes missing on his latest expedition, Sasha embarks on an epic adventure to find him and his lost ship, the Davai. Rebelling against her family’s wishes, she leaves behind her comfortable St Petersburg lifestyle to face hardship and many setbacks along the way, and her grit and determination get her right to the icy oceans of the far north. But where is her grandfather? Can Sasha and her shipmates survive the harshest of conditions long enough to find him?

Winner of the Audience Award at last year’s prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, this is a truly beautiful animated adventure. The director, Rémi Chayé, was part of the team who crafted The Secret of Kells back in 2009, so it comes as no surprise that the style and tone of this latest animation matches the landscape and characters’ surroundings as much as it did in that earlier film – despite the fact it’s a very different world. And in a city like Dundee, home to ships that made the same kinds of expeditions as the Davai, Long Way North really does help the stories we hear at Discovery Point burst into life.

The WitchesSat 29 October, 13:00

A combination of the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth, DCA’s Dundead Halloween celebration of all things spooky and the work of one of Britain’s finest ever film directors gives us three good reasons to screen The Witches. And it was produced with the help of Discovery favourite Jim ‘Mr Muppets’ Henson!

During a holiday with his grandmother in Norway, Luke Eveshim is told stories about real witches: female demons with a genocidal hatred for children, who emit an odour they find unbearable. Back in the UK and on holiday at a seaside resort, Luke meets a gluttonous but friendly boy, Bruno Jenkins, while getting on the bad side of hotel manager Mr Stringer after his pet mice frighten a maid. Also staying at the hotel are all of England’s witches, masquerading as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, with the Grand High Witch, their leader, attending their conference. Luke inadvertently discovers the witches while playing with his pet mice inside the ballroom, where they are holding their meeting. The Grand High Witch unveils her latest weapon: a formula to turn children into mice, which they will use on confectionery products in sweet shops and candy stores. Can such relentless evil be stopped in time?

AlenaSat 29 October, 18:00

Be the first in the UK to see Alena, a brand new Swedish horror that depicts the harshest of high school realities. Mean Girls meets Carrie in this story of jealous schoolgirls that sees clichéd corridor cattiness turn to sinister twisted gore.

Meet Alena, the new girl at an elite boarding school, an underdog you’re sure to relate to. Into her world comes Filippa, who’s rich, the most popular girl in school, and a bully; Fabienne, caring and kooky, not an outcast, but not your typical ‘cool’ kid either; and then there’s Josefin, a mysterious figure from Alena’s past who’s jealous, controlling and abusive and paves the way for the carnage that follows. It’s a new term and with all the strong characters, rivalries and severe jealousy within the school, things are going to get messy...

Dir: Daniel di Grado Sweden 2015 / 1h23m / Age 15+ Swedish with English subtitles

WHAT OUR DISCOVERY YOUNG AMBASSADORS SAID:“An atmospheric plunge into the workings of the damaged mind”

“an original feel and eerie tone”

“a suspenseful ‘ghost’ story, layered with jealousy and deceit”

“captivating and chilling”

“provoking all kinds of emotion”

EXHIBITION

KATY DOVE An exhibition of video, drawing, painting and prints

Sat 17 September — Sun 20 November

To coincide with this year’s Discovery Film Festival, DCA galleries will be given over to an exhibition of drawings, collages, paintings, prints and animations by the much-loved artist Katy Dove (1970 – 2015). Katy created meditative spaces through her combinations of sound and image, and contemplative responses to colour and rhythm.

Born in Oxford, Katy studied Psychology before receiving a BA from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. Moving to Glasgow, she developed her art practice alongside a number of musical projects, including Muscles of Joy. Solo exhibitions of her work included Transmission Gallery; Platform and GoMA, Glasgow; Collective and Talbot Rice, Edinburgh; Pump House, London and Spacex Exeter. Katy was very active in artist-initiated projects commencing in her student years in Dundee with the Unit 13 group and as part of Full Eye with Anne-Marie Copestake and Ariki Porteous.

Katy was very interested in presenting her work to younger audiences, and found children to be especially receptive to her work.

Secrets of War OORLOGSGEHEIMENSun 30 October, 10:30

Can real friendship survive distrust and betrayal?

It’s 1943, and conflict rages across Europe. The Nazis have occupied the Netherlands, but for 12 year-old best friends Tuur and Lambert not much seems to have really changed: they still go to school each day, and still play war games with their wooden guns in the forest and underground caves just outside their small village. But the realities of the conflict soon intrude on their familiar world: Lambert is bullied over his family’s affiliation with the local Nazi party, while Tuur’s parents and brother are mysteriously quiet on the subject of a resistance group rumoured to be developing in the town. When the boys begin to compete for the attentions of Maartje, a young newcomer to their class, their bond is put to the test. And when Maartje grows closer to Tuur, Lambert’s jealousy sets in motion a series of events that will alter all three children’s lives.

Adapted from Jacques Vriens’s bestselling young-adult novel, which was inspired by events that occurred in the author’s native region of South Limburg, Secrets of War is a gripping account of friendship and courage. Skilfully and sensitively directing a talented young cast, Dennis Bots handles the difficult subject matter with reverence. Both a thrilling wartime drama and an affecting coming-of-age story, the film is a bittersweet ode to innocence lost.

HördurHÖRDUR – ZWISCHEN DEN WELTEN Sun 30 October, 11:00

Aylin, a 17 year-old Muslim girl who’s part of the Turkish diaspora in Germany, finds herself sentenced to community service at a riding school on the outskirts of town after a brush with the law. Beset by trouble at home and school, it is here that, despite all the odds, she begins to find her feet and discover a place in the world in which she feels comfortable and accepted. As time progresses, her unique relationship with the stallion Hördur and her own fledgling dreams are tested to breaking point. Can Aylin truly build a bridge between worlds? And if she can, will others follow?

The director has stated that he sees Aylin as something of ‘a Turkish Cinderella’. Through a programme that is imposed on her as a punishment for bad behaviour she gets to know a world that is the very opposite of hers: a world seemingly only for people of a different class and income level. Her preconceptions are challenged, and she learns more about the world outside the one she’s used to. In an age when some borders are breaking down, and others are being built higher, this story of incomers – both Aylin and Hördur – is powerfully positive.

Hördur is screening in DCA’s weekly Cine Sundays slot, so you get your cinema ticket, a pre-screening hot drink and breakfast roll all for £7. Alternatively, festival prices still apply!

Antboy IIISat 5 November, 10:30

All good things must come to an end…

For the past couple of festivals we have enjoyed the exciting blockbuster adventures of superhero Pelle Nøhrmann, a.k.a. Antboy, who has to juggle protection of his small Danish town with all the pressures of his early teenage years at school. Now, with crime under control, we see him prepare to leave his crime-fighting alter ego behind, only to learn that his nemesis The Flea has just been released from prison. Worse still, a cool new alternative superhero has emerged onto the scene, and Antboy begins to find himself sidelined and treated as a joke in the community. Will Antboy have to rely on a new and unexpected ally as he sets out to face his greatest challenge?

This action-packed finale of the Antboy trilogy sees our hero go out in a blaze of superhero glory (did we ever doubt it?) and features some fantastic set pieces as Pelle/Antboy fights to set things right. For anyone new to the trilogy, the action is all made very clear and easy to follow, and naturally adheres to the comic book and superhero conventions we’ve come to love. Once again though, it’s the human characteristics and challenges that really hit the mark, as we watch Pelle overcome his feelings of isolation and difference to become reconciled with family, friends and foes alike. It’s the end of the Antboy era, but it definitely goes out with a kapow!

By 2017, the global app market will be valued at $77 billion. Over 80% of its developers are male. The annual international Technovation Challenge aims to empower girls worldwide by challenging them to build a mobile app that will address a community problem. Since 2010, nearly 5,000 girls from 60 countries have taken part in this free competition that requires no programming experience to participate in. The winning team gets $10K to complete and release their app, but every girl discovers something valuable along the way.

This fascinating documentary follows a disparate group of high-school students — from locations including rural Moldova, urban Brazil and suburban Massachusetts — as they work towards holding their own in the world’s fastest-growing industry. The apps they create explore topics such as water conservation, proper waste disposal, volunteerism, and the prevention of impaired driving. The winning team may get the cash prize and a chance to complete and release their app, but, along the way, all participants develop skills in critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and innovation. Follow the teams as they try to better their communities through technology and collaboration in this thrilling, heartfelt documentary. Can you spot who is going to win the competition?

Come and see the film, then ask yourself: could you be a participant in 2017? Take the challenge!

Sleeping GiantSun 6 November, 11:00

Teenager Adam is spending his summer vacation with his wealthy parents on the shores of Lake Superior. His dull routine is shattered when he befriends Riley and Nate, mouthy cousins who pass their ample free time staging Jackass-style capers that gradually get riskier and more dangerous, from shoplifting to recreational drugs and cliffjumping. As Adam is drawn into their world, he surprises himself with the extent to which he begins take part, overcoming his earlier caution. But when the revelation of a hurtful secret triggers Adam to set in motion a series of irreversible events, the bonds of friendship are tested and the lives of the three boys are changed forever.

The slow burn towards the dramatic climax could feel somewhat obvious, but the quality of the characterisation and the stunning, natural acting on display distracts you from the inevitability of it all and sucks you into a very real world of teenage pranks and inescapable peer pressure.

Sleeping Giant is screening in DCA’s weekly Cine Sundays slot, so you can get your cinema ticket, a pre-screening hot drink and breakfast roll all for £7. Alternatively, festival prices still apply!

Your NameKIMI NO NA WASun 6 November, 15:30

Once again we’ve teamed up with those lovely people at Scotland Loves Anime to bring you this very special preview screening of a brand new anime title ahead of its UK release! These are always very popular events during the festival so we recommend you book early to make sure you don’t miss out.

This latest film is the brainchild of writer/director Makoto Shinkai, who some have tipped to fill the gap left by the (temporary?) absence of Studio Ghibli, and revolves around two genuinely star-crossed lovers.

Mitsuha is a female high school student who lives in a rural town nestled deep in the mountains. Her father is the mayor and isn’t at home much, and she lives with her elementary school-aged little sister and her grandmother. She yearns for the wonderful lifestyle of living in Tokyo. Meanwhile, Taki is a male high school student who lives in central Tokyo. He spends time with his friends, works part-time at an Italian restaurant, and is interested in architecture and fine arts. One day, Mitsuha has a dream where she is a young man. Taki also has a dream where he is a female high school student in a town in the mountains that he has never been to. Can they uncover the secret behind these mysterious visions?

COMING UP AT DCA

Even when the festival is over, you won’t have to wait long for some more fantastic family cinema at DCA. Looking at what’s coming up in the run-up to Christmas, we’re already very excited about some of the new

films that will be hitting our screens.

Fans of all things Potter will not want to miss Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Popping back in time a little way, we learn of the adventures of writer

Newt Scamander (played by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) as he navigates New York’s secret community of witches and wizards, 70 years before Harry Potter reads

his book in school.

Feel-good film A Street Cat Named Bob will warm the very cockles of our cat-loving hearts – who doesn’t love a scarf-wearing ginger tom who’ll give you a high five?

And finally Christmas is set to come early again this year with the slice of blockbusting mega-action that is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Can’t wait? Neither can we – see you in the Cinema!
