In our quest to elevate the youth of our community, we are once again striving to raise funds for our annual

Chamber Challenge for Education auction. This past June, Scott County sent around 50 children to JA Biz

Camp in Louisville for a 5-day experience in the business world.

The children road a bus to Louisville each morning and returned in the evening around 4pm. While there, they

were given jobs and tasks to accomplish that paralleled the business world. Some were accountants, clerks,

bank tellers, business managers, and some ran for office! The week culminated in a pizza party that was spon-

sored by MASP and the EDC, in conjunction with the generosity of donations during the year to the Education

fund. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely and gained valuable insight into the world of business.

Most the monies it takes to send our children on this exciting educational adventure, $185 per child, will be

raised at our auction on Monday, October 6, 2014 at the Knights of Columbus. The evening starts at 5 and ends

around 8pm. You may donate items for our auction by calling Sandee Owens at 812-595-0380 and arranging

for pick-up, or drop items off at the Chamber offices. Additionally, booth space is still available. If you would

like to sponsor one or more children, sponsorships are also available by calling the number above.

There is already a waiting list of children to attend next year’s event in Louisville. Please help us be able to

send all who want to attend. Our children will benefit from your generosity and our community reaps the re-

wards of an educated, excited, connected group of children who experience the love of small town.

Annual United Way Day

of Caring. Whether you

cleaned, painted, raked, or another chore, you made a difference in our commu-

nity. We saw people leading by example, to their friends, family and co-workers!

Over 100 people of all ages came out on Saturday, September the 13th to engage in

our Day. We would also like to send out a special THANK YOU to those that partici-

pated in giving, Pepsi-Co, Growby’s Rent to Own, Save A Lot Food Store, Jay C’s

Food Store, Toller’s Bar-B-Que, Multi-Color Corp, Grace Christian Academy.

We heard from many of you who described your experiences as rewarding, challeng-

ing, eye-opening, fun, humbling and fulfilling. And we received thanks from project

leaders who thanked and praised the helpful, hard-working volunteers.

As we join together to LIVE UNITED, we are reminded that we have the power to

facilitate change. Be someone that is a DOER instead of a TALKER and help build

the strength of our neighborhoods, schools and bolster the health of our community

In The Spotlight : Alpha Combat Training Sponsored by

We recently had a Ribbon Cutting for Alpha Combat Training Center and were

curious as to how this all came about. Joe tells the story in his own words.

“After approximately 10 years in a career in Law Enforcement, I decided

it was time for a new chapter in my life. In my years of service, I recognized

seeing myself responding to several dispatch calls in which I had to deal with

single mothers trying to raise troubled young adult males. I further recognized

my calling when I began coaching junior high and high school wrestling at

Scottsburg. I would listen to the young boy’s daily struggles and would try my

best to be a father-figure to them during their hurtful times. It was during these

events, both on the streets patrolling and in wrestling practices, that I felt a calling from God to open what is

now known as Alpha Combat Training Center, which includes programs for teenagers e.g. jr high/ high

school boxing league, Brazilian jujitsu, karate, after-school strength and conditioning classes, as well as,

women’s only cardio boxing classes and men’s beginning boxing classes. The saying is really true…. “It

takes a whole community to raise our kids.” Whether we know it or not, our kids are affected by everyone

that’s around them and their actions.”

“Our facility is diverse in so many ways. When a person walks in the front door, they won’t find any

fancy dumbbells, exercise machines, or treadmills. You will find pieces of equipment designed to make you

actually use your bodyweight to burn away those stubborn calories. Our daily workout programs are de-

signed for all levels of fitness. All of our daily workout programs are set-up on timed intervals so you don’t

have to worry about keeping up with the individual next to you.”

Hours of operation are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10am-12pm. Monday, Wednesday, Friday:

3pm-9pm. Tuesday, Thursday: 3pm-9pm, and Saturday morning classes: 9am-1pm. The facility is located at

1625 West McClain Ave, Scottsburg, across from Wal-mart and next to Big O Tires.

Some times the good things take our time instead of the best things. Prioritizing is paramount to success.

There are good things that take our time, and even better things, but our focus needs to be concentrated in

the best areas to maximize our efforts.

Scott County Discovers: Home Helpers Sponsored by By Diana Hahn

THE HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!

Mike and Becky St. Clair of Home Helpers of Scottsburg, IN

were honored as the Home Helpers International Franchise As-

sociation’s 2014 Franchisee of the Year during the 15th Annual

Public Affairs Conference on Sept. 16 in Washington, D.C. This award recognizes

outstanding franchise establishment owners and honors their performance and con-

tributions they have made to enhance the growth and development of franchising.

“Mike and Becky truly deserve this award,” said Emma Dickison, President of Home

Helpers and Direct Link. “They embody the dedication, leadership and entrepreneurial vision it takes to be

successful in with Home Helpers.”

Mike and Becky were also honored with the 2014 Home Helpers President’s Award at our national conven-

tion in Las Vegas in May.

The Franchisee of the Year Award program is a major component of the IFA’s Public Affairs Conference,

which brings more than 400 franchise business leaders together in Washington, D.C. annually to carry the key

messages of franchising to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. During the two-day event held on Sept. 16-17, fran-

chise industry leaders met with more than 200 congressional offices about issues important to the future of

franchising such as business tax extenders, health care and National Labor Relations Board Joint Employer

Status.

I stopped by to talk to Mike about their latest award. The place was teeming with activity when I walked in.

Mike was gracious enough to take a few minutes out of his busy schedule to talk to me. This all started in

2007 when Mike lost his job at Freudenberg. Not wanting to move again, Mike decided to take control of his

future by owning his own business. After some research, Mike and Becky decided to launch Home Helpers.

After jumping through hoops for several months, Mike decided to take a job elsewhere to have a steady in-

come until Home Helpers got off the ground. Becky decided to quit her job to devote the hours needed to

grow their business. There came a point when Mike was working at Pepsi, that the business needed his full

attention and he decided it was time to concentrate his resources on building Home Helpers and quit his job.

Putting in long hours, 7 days a week, it was a labor of love. The St. Clairs have seen their business steadily

grow to the point of employing close to 200, with plans to increase not only their employee base, but client

base also. Home Helpers does Companion Care, Attendant Care, Home Care, & In-Home Nursing, among

others. They service from Richmond to Lawrenceburg, and east of 65 from Greenwood to Louisville, encom-

passing the southeast part of the state. The plan is to continue to grow so at some point, they can hand over a

healthy, growing company to their daughter, Shelby, who works in the business with them now. Shelby at-

tended IUS as a full-time student while working 40 hours for “mom & dad” until she finished her degree,

“with honors” a proud dad added. I’d say she got her work ethic from both of them and the future looks bright

for Home Helpers!

This is a great honor and accomplishment, and we commend Mike and Becky for their efforts and success.

This coming Saturday October 4th, the Scottsburg FFA Chapter will be putting on its 4th Annual Fall Prospect

Beef Show. This show is designed for individuals looking to showcase their cattle that were born after January 1st

of this 2014 year. The show has been continuing to grow over each year and has increased to over 50+ exhibitors, along with

their family and friends. Classes are organized by age division of the exhibitors and breed of the animal, and many great

awards are handed away. These include a diverse assortment of ribbons, banners, cash prizes, and various other special

awards for breed winners and overall champions!

The Scottsburg FFA encourages the public to come out to the Scott County Fairgrounds to watch and support the fantastic

showmen and their animals, as well as the astounding organization that puts it on! Breakfast as well as lunch will be served at

the FFA Food Booth. The show will begin around 11am on Saturday at the 4-H Livestock Arena at the Fairgrounds! The

Scottsburg FFA hopes to see many faces there!

Meet the Chamber: Derek Everhart Sponsored by By Diana Hahn

I cannot begin to explain the honor of getting to know this

next person on our Board, and I have to say that he is most

definitely a quality individual. Sometimes I have to remind

myself that this young man is still in high school, for his

insight and communication skills are far beyond his years.

Derek Everhart is one of our Jr Board members from Aus-

tin High School. Hailing from Austin, Derek is a senior this

year, in addition to obtaining sophomore qualifications

from Ivy Tech. He plans to attend Butler University in Indi-

ana to study Pharmaceutical Sciences and get his Doctorate in Pharmacy. In the short time

I have had the pleasure of working with him, I am in awe of this young man’s focus and

wherewithal to step into the issues that our community faces with confidence and clarity

of purpose. He seems to have a gift of seeing the problem and presenting much needed

solutions.

Derek says he enjoys “all aspects of life.” A favorite spot to vacation is Panama City

Beach. He likes the diversity of the winter and summer seasons. In his down time, he finds

the Scream Series interesting to watch.

The quote that stirs Derek is one that we should all take note of. Grace Harper stated, “The

most dangerous phrase in the language is: We’ve always done it this way.” Derek says, “ I

would like to see Scott County more unified and undivided by our petty “Austin vs Scotts-

burg” issues. I would enjoy seeing our school systems overhauled, possibly even AHS &

Crothersville High consolidated. I would like to see more activities in Scott Co to promote

drug and alcohol abstinence.”

Derek is striving for solutions that are not the same things we’ve done before. I think with

a little cooperation and some freedom to work, this young man and his peers will see that

things move in the right direction. County me in!
