SCOTT EVANS
PERSONAL PROFILE I am originally a structural engineer from New Zealand, where I completed my University
studies and structural engineering practice. Here I worked on a variety of projects including
new developments and refurbishments of existing and earthquake damaged projects. This
experience gave me exposure to some amazing projects and allowed me to develop my skills
in both the structural engineering and project management areas.
I am currently employed as a Design Manager at an architectural firm in Abu Dhabi,
undertaking project and design management roles in delivering large scale projects. In this
role, my most valuable skills include my ability to communicate effectively with all members
of the team in achieving project goals and outcomes. I also have a range of skills in BIM,
project management, design co-ordination, quality assurance and construction knowledge
which I can contribute towards the projects I am involved in. I am incredibly passionate
about the engineering and construction industry and would like to further develop my skills
and career within the industry.
SKILLS & ABILITIES Communication
As part of my current role as a design manager, I have experience with effective communication
with the whole design team from the technicians to directors and clients.
I have experience with developing systems and relationships with clients. In particular, I
am the client contact with a number of large projects and development companies in
Abu Dhabi including Aldar, ADNOC and Miral.
Computer Skills and Analysis
I have analysis experience using ETABS, SAP and Microstran which I have use to analyze
and review complex buildings and systems.
I am also proficient with excel and I have helped to establish and program spreadsheets
for structural calculations, project management and programming tools.
I have extensive experience with 3D BIM modeling on a number of large projects, this
includes using modeling in a multidiscipline format from conceptual development to
shop-drawings and construction. I have experience with a range of software including
Revit, Bently’s Microstation and Tekla structures.
Abu Dhabi Authority Submissions
As part of my current role I have had significant experience with authority submissions in Abu
Dhabi including: UPC, ADM, DOT, ADCD etc.

Risk Management
My experience with risk management has helped me to develop effective management
systems and improve project outcomes. This has been developed from the values of my
current company and through a number of risk management courses and workshops.
Experience in leading edge seismic engineering
I have experience in designing new and innovative structural systems. For example the
experience I have with analysis and design of BRB systems in multi-story buildings. The
projects I have been involved in which utilize BRB technology, are ground breaking in New
Zealand and while their use is increasing, these projects are some of the first incorporating
this technology in New Zealand.
I have witnessed and studied the engineering failures exposed by the Canterbury
Earthquakes. As a result, I have firsthand experience of poor seismic design and detailing
and the improvements to design standards to remediate these issues.
Focused and willing to learn
I have a strong willingness to learn and enthusiasm for developing new ideas and concepts.
I am very willing to learn from my colleagues and I use that knowledge and criticism to
develop my skills.
Academic achievement
I have excelled at university gaining excellent grades and have managed to improve them
throughout. I received my degree with 1st class honors and finished my last year with an
average between A and A+.
EDUCATION BATCHELOR OF ENGINEERING (BE(HONS)) - UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY
I received a First Class honors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury in
2012. As part of this degree I majored in structural engineering and finished my degree with a
GPA of 8.2 in my final year.
Canterbury University has a well-established Engineering degree which is accredited as part
of the Washington Accord. The structural engineering department is at the leading edge of
seismic engineering and has contributed to a number of innovative seismic systems, including
low damage systems such as post-tensioned rocking frames and walls.
EXPEREINCE SHANKLAND COX, DESIGN MANAGER
January 2016 - Present
Shankland Cox is a long standing company in the UAE, which began in Al Ain in the 1970’s
and have completed a number of major projects all over the UAE including in Abu Dhabi, Al
Ain and Dubai. Their main services focus is on architectural design but also include a
number of engineering disciplines.
My current role at Shankland Cox is as a design manager for the architectural team. This role
mainly focuses on managing the production and quality assurance of design documentation
to ensure it meets office standards and project requirements. This includes the
multi-disciplinary coordination and clash detection to ensure coordinated designs and
documentations are developed.
ENGENIUM, STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
December 2012- December 2015
Engenium is a well-established structural engineering consultancy in New Zealand. Their
primary work is based around two key areas, industrial building design for which they are
leaders in the New Zealand and multi-story steel design. The latter being a focus of my design
development and experience.
I began at Engenium in 2012 as a graduate structural engineer. My primary role was as a
design engineer, however I also had experience in construction review, seismic
assessment and strengthening, design review, project management and assisting as an expert
in a civil case. In my time at Engenium, I have learnt about key engineering and design
principles and I have applied these to complex engineering projects.
PROJECTS YAS MALL HOTEL, ABU DHABI
This project is currently being designed as a new hotel facility adjacent to Yas Mall and
includes a number of innovative design features. Shankland cox are undertaking this project
as part of the design team lead by Aukett Swanke. My role in the project is to act as the Design
Manager for the areas responsible by Shankland Cox, this mainly focuses on the Authority
liaison and BIM model production and subsequent 2D drawings.
My Authority liason function focuses on managing the production of documentation, quality
control, responding to queries and attending meetings to ensure that the apropriate
submission are made and approved on schedule. As part of this function my role is to
communicate this to the client as it has been identified as a key risk to the project schedule.
As part of the BIM production, my role is to manage the design development including
highlighting design and co-ordination issues and resolving these at design team meetings and
client workshops.
MEDCAR, CHRISTCHURCH
This project was a redevelopment of prominent site at the western entrance to the Central City.
The existing building has been demolished to make way for a new 5 story office building, which
will house a Porsche dealership and medical offices on the upper levels.
My role in the project was as the primary design engineer and also to work with the design
team in developing the design. This project has complex architectural components due to its
prominent location, high end showroom on the ground floor and varied use of each floor. It
also incorporates innovative the Buckling Restrained Brace (BRB) system as the primary
lateral load resistance.
BUILDING A ALEXANDRA PARK, AUCKLAND
Building A is the first building in the development of the Alexandra park raceway into a series
of high end apartment buildings. The main building is has two 8 stories towers above ground
and a two level basement. The primary systems are insitu concrete walls and steel-concrete
composite floors.
My role in the project was the primary designer of the gravity structure including suspended
floors and secondary structural elements. This project was complex due to the geometry
defined to meet the architectural design and multi-use of car parking, retail and apartments in
the same building. As a result, I designed a number of transfer structures which were required
to maintain these systems. GREY DISTRICT AQUATIC CENTRE MEDIATION AND REPAIRS, GREYMOUTH
As part of this project we acted as the engineering expert for the Grey District Council. The
Aquatic Centre which was developed in 2008, was designed with timber rafters over the main
pool hall. These rafters were undersized by the original designer and they crept to
approximately 200mm over a period of 2 years. The council filed court action against the
original designer and associated parties.
My role was to undertake all the required structural analysis of the roof system and to establish
the capacity of the roof system. There was concern from the community that the roof may
collapse in a similar way to another stadium in New Zealand. We also completed the concept
design for the repairs during the mediation and worked with the contractor
to complete these repairs. This project taught me about the application of engineering and its
relationship to the law. It also helped to reinforce my understanding of engineers’ roles and
responsibilities to our communities.
