WELCOME TO THE 2010 SCOTTDALE FALLFESTIVAL Welcome to the 2010 Scottdale Fall Festival. This year will be the 36th year for the festival. Although the festival has had many names over the last 36 years, the principles never changed. The festival has always been a festival for the community of Scottdale. The idea started with the 100 year anniversary celebration of Scottdale. A group of Scottdale citizens created a celebration for the 100 year anniversary Festival. This group of people then decided to have an annual festival called the Scottdale Coke Heritage. This festival was started in 1974. The festival would change names several times over the years until its present day name, The Scottdale Fall Festival. The present day name of the Scottdale Fall Festival has been around now for 13 years. This is one of many events that the citizens of Scottdale can be proud of. This festival was created by the community of Scottdale; for the community of Scottdale. Over the last 36 years the festival has attracted people of all ages and helps promote local businesses in our community. This three day celebration has many events such as a dog show, live entertainment, a race, ethnic foods, children’s area, a teen dance, and much more. A list of events, food, and entertainment can be found on pages 4-9. The Scottdale Fall Festival committee thanks you for attending and making this festival bigger and better each year!

Mahajibee Blues Officially started in 2000, Mahajibee was created like many other bands by playing for fun in the basement. They played their first gig at a Christmas party with a handful of tunes and a lot of luck. From there they performed in a few more local clubs and opened for Johnny Angel and the Halos at the North Side Summer Celebration 2001 to which they have been invited back every year since. They released another CD in 2004 and Mahajibee opened for two more shows that year at The Hard Rock Cafe in Station Square. 2005 marks the return of former guitarist Mike Bowen (2002). They opened up for the legendary Deep Purple on the main stage at the Rib America Food and Music Festival at Chevrolet Amphitheatre, Station Square on Saturday, June 11th. They’ve been invited back to Avonworth, Mellon Square, USX, The North Side Celebration and the Spot Bar Blues Festival. They also were invited to participate in the Carnegie Festival’s “Blues on Main Street!” in September.

Switch

Switch plays a wide variety of music that appeals to a all ages. The band is celebrating their 16th anniversary and hopes to be together for 16 more. The band continues to please crowds throughout the tri-county area.

“Get ready to dance in your seat!”

PURE GOLDWith signature acappella vocals and four-part harmonies, Pure Gold delivers diverse sounds and

musical styles with a stage presence that transcends audience ages and backgrounds. Bringing the golden age of American vocal harmony to performances from Radio City Music Hall to The Waldorf Astoria and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pure Gold doo-wops their way through the decades, performing material from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as well as a blend of blues, standards and original material to highlight their unique talents and range.

Pure Gold is synonymous with quality. The highly-polished band orchestrates the perfect mood with music, adding ambiance and excitement to any affair. Pure Gold has performed at countless engagements from corporate events to wedding receptions, birthday parties to anniversary celebrations. Pure Gold has been afforded the opportunity to play for The National Football League (NFL), The National Hockey League (NHL), and Heinz USA.

Norm Nardini Norman spent the late 60’s and early 70’s doing covers and learning the ropes. In 1971,

while living in Boston and attending the Berklee School of Music, Nardini spent a week playing guitar for music legend Big Mama Thornton and George “Harmonica” Smith at The Jazz Workshop. It was a great education. After two more releases, 1976’s “Dirty Diamonds” on the Kama Sutra label and 1978’s “Ruff Cuts” on Mad Dog Records.

The 1981 release “Eatin Alive”, recorded live at Cleveland’s legendary Agora Club, received a 4 Star Review from Rolling Stone’s record guide. 1983 saw the CBS release of “Norman Nardini and The Tigers”, which featured Norman’s longtime friend, Jon Bon Jovi, on background vocals.

In 1998, Moondog Records released “There Was A Time”. Through the years, Norman has continued to develop his guitar playing, song writing skills and stage persona. At this time, we are proud to present “Redemption”. Also, Herman Granti appears as special guest on keyboards along with Phil Brontz on Tenor Sax.Mercedez

When it comes to excitement and high-energy entertainment, few bands come close to the energy of Mercedez. Whether you’re seeking a dance, funk or hip-hop style group, or simply a band that will “rock the house”, Mercedez surpasses all your expectations! Best described as “edgy, high-energy dance that rocks”, Mercedez delivers an electrifying stage show with enough diversity to please everyone. They artfully blend the extremes of rock and hip-hop together in a way that is uniquely Mercedez. Featuring both male and female vocals, their versatile and explosive sound will have everyone up and dancing all night!

Mercedez…an exceptional act that truly will drive you to dance!

METROMetro was formed in 1989 out of a shared love of music

and a passion to entertain fans while having a great time doing it. A mix of the hottest dance hits, all-time rock favorites, and lively party songs make Metro one of the most unique and entertaining dance bands around. The dynamic five-piece ensemble consists of Elisha Costello (lead vocals), Steve Marchetti (guitar, lead vocals), Chris Caruso (bass, lead vocals), Jim Lishego (keyboard, vocals) and Bob Breakiron (drums, percussion).

A truly diverse band, Metro’s members each bring unique talents to the stage and deliver high-energy shows that make their faithful fans dance all night. Metro’s fun-loving spirit and undeniable musical talent come together and make people return to see and hear the band time and time again.

For more information about Metro and for a complete schedule of shows, visit www.unbridledband.com. Or Unbridled Band and Metro Band Facebook.

The HolidaysMore than 50 years ago, five young men from Clairton, PA, had a dream. They wanted to be

entertainers. The Holidays debuted in 1958. In 1962, the group disbanded and all members went their separate ways, some to raise families and some to fulfill military obligations. In 2001, one of the originals, along with the female singer, retired. At that time, Lou Ann Shields was introduced to The Holidays audience as the new female singer. In 2002, the group recorded it’s first CD, For Your Love, at West Hills Productions, produced by Radioactive Gold disc jockey, Dave Justice. In 2009, the vocal group went back to being called “The Holidays.” The current vocal members of The Holidays consist of Sam Ferrella, in his 11th year with the group also manages and promotes the group. In February of 2005, The Holidays released their second CD called “Keepin’ the Sound Alive”. Their CD entitled “Here and Now” was released in March 2007. Once again, the name “The Holidays” are back on the lips of the DJ’s and their fans. In 2008, “Collectable Records” took the best of The Holidays and released a CD called, “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.” In 2009, The Holidays went International with Crystal Ball Records CD release of “Doo-Wopin Around The World”.

2010 promises to be another great year and time for The Holidays. Great harmonies, great music and great performances along with a new CD release later this year. And....The legacy continues.

The Sweet ShoppeScottdale has always had a candy shop in town. When the Record

Den closed Scottdale was without a candy shop; until The Sweet Shoppe opened in July of 2009. Suzie the owner said she made the shop in Scottdale

because she could always remember a little candy shop in town. She has lived in Scottdale and she remains in Scottdale to this day. Suzie’s Sweet Shoppe is very similar to the candy shops of the past. The Sweet Shoppe sells all of the regular candy, along with some old favorites. One item that remains on the sales list is the old fashion penny candy. The shop also sells ice cream, coffee, popcorn, smoothies and much more. This sweet Shoppe in Scottdale is the only location. Suzie said, “The Scottdale fall festival is a wonderful event and she will be open during the festival, so stop by the shop!”

Southmoreland School District Mr. Dan Clara and Mr. John Lee were excited to discuss the changes that the Southmoreland School District recently went through. The principal for Southmoreland Middle School is Mr. Dan Clara and the principal for the Southmoreland Elementary School is Mr. John Lee. The School was built in 2008 at a cost of 20 million plus dollars. Both principals said that the design of the new school was well thought out and that the students have a better learning environment. The design of the school reflects the Scottdale community with old town photos and murals throughout. Both the entrance to the middle school and the elementary school are very bright and welcoming. The middle school is modern with the latest up to date technology. The new library windows at the elementary school represent the Coal and coke ovens of our past industry. This is an example of how the new schools were designed to represent the community of Scottdale.

Mr. Dan Clara joined the Southmoreland School District in 2008. Before Southmoreland, he was an assistant principal at Gateway High School; where they had more students in one lunch period than Southmoreland has in their entire school. By having a smaller student body, Mr. Clara said that he was able to know the students better. During the student transfer from the Alverton school building to the new school building in Scottdale Mr. Clara was the principal. He said it was a challenge to move a school but with the help of Dr. Scott and the administration they were able to move the students without trouble. The new school building

was improved with new technology and better computer labs. The school has a computer lab with thirty computers and a smart board so the students can learn better. It also has thirty mobile laptops that teachers can use at their convenience. Also, the new building was one of the nicest schools Mr. Clara has overseen. The middle school has a mixture of veteran and new teachers. Mr. Clara said, “The veterans give a good insight to the new staff members, so it makes a better learning environment for the kids.”

Mr. Lee, a principal of 20 years, is now the Southmoreland Elementary School principal. Before Southmoreland changed the division of grades Mr. Lee was principal of grades kindergarten through sixth. Today he is principal of grades second through five. Mr. Lee said, “It was better when I knew the kids at the start of their school career.” When the kindergarten, first and six grades left; Mr. Lee said he missed the activities that each grade participated in. For example, the sixth graders Laurelville trip and the kindergarten’s box day. He also mentioned that it was different having seven third grade classes. The school remodeling went well with few complications. Mr. Lee remarked that the contractor did a nice job. He went on to say a little new mixed with a little old made a perfect blend for a new school building. The original floor plan layout remained the same with more colorful and brighter classrooms. Mr. Lee said it makes a better learning environment for the staff and students. Also he said, “If you just add some color the learning environment it becomes better.” With the new school came new technology. The Elmo carts are one of the newest technologies that the teachers can use. These carts have document cameras on them that will project the document on to a screen. One of these carts can be found in every classroom at the new building. Mr. Lee went on to say that the students and teachers are excited to use the new technology. Last school year there were eleven teachers that retired from the elementary school. The school will be a different environment without those teachers, but a good school has a mix of new and veteran teachers. Change is a good thing when you make it a good thing. The last comment that Mr. Lee had for the festival was, “We are here for the kids.”

JJ’S PIZZAOne of the newest pizza shops to open in Scottdale is JJ’s Pizza.

Owner Jeffery James Wishart opened the shop on September 31, 2009. The pizza shop was named after Jeff’s first and middle name. Jeff enjoys running the pizza shop and went on to say, that everyone has their niche; owning the pizza shop is his. Jeff said that once he graduated college he started working in his field of study; he quickly learned that he did not want to work behind a desk. Items on the menu include; pizza, Stromboli, salads, and much more. With all the pizza places in Scottdale Jeff said there is enough business for everyone. He enjoys the Scottdale community and the Scottdale Fall Festival. Jeff believes the festival brings people to Scottdale and he will be open during the festival. Jeff said that creating a pizza shop was difficult; he had to create a menu and buy all the equipment needed to make pizza. Many people do not know how hard starting a new business can be, said Jeff. JJ’s Pizza delivers not only to Scottdale but to Mt. Pleasant, Dawson, and East Huntington. Jeff said, “The pizza shop is open all day everyday even during the festival. So come check us out!”

FOX’S Pizza DenOne of the older pizza shops located in Scottdale is Fox’s Pizza. Fox’s is owned by Jason Vies and Jennifer Olack; they have owned the shop

for twelve years now. Jason was excited to sit down and discussed their business with the Scottdale fall festival. He said that the Scottdale community has not changed much and neither has the pizza making process. Fox’s sells many items including pizza, hoagies, salads,

spaghetti, wings, and much more. Jason and Jennifer are originally from Scottdale and have both enjoyed the festival for many years. Jason said there were two previous owners that owned Fox’s before them. Fox’s

pizza has been in the same location on Pittsburgh Street for the last twelve years. Jason went on to say that they always add something new

to their menu every year. This year Fox’s will be serving Italian beef and pierogies during the Fall Festival.

The Table Coffee Shop The Table coffee shop located on 217 Pittsburgh Street opened on August 1, 2009. Deb Haddad was excited to sit down and discuss her business with the Scottdale Fall Festival. Deb said, they opened the coffee shop in order to get to know the Scottdale community. It’s a place for the younger generation to go and hang out. Even though she has some older customers the majority of her customers are the middle aged and younger generation. Deb said, “It was hard to start a business in small community with a small store front, but she loves where she is in the Scottdale community.” The Table Coffee Shop offers a wide variety of coffees and teas. All of their drinks are organic and she has 50 plus items on the menu. Homemade soups are available every day. Deb said, “This is the only shop, however it would be nice to expand.” She also said that the Coffee Shop is here to stay. There is always something happening at the Table. Some of the events include; music on Saturday nights, birthday parties, showers, homeschooling, and game night. She has an organic co-op program that includes dry goods, spices, and a variety of beans that are hard to find. You can become a member of the co-op program by visiting the Coffee Shop. The Table Coffee Shop is also on facebook and has a website at www.coffeegamescommunity.com. So go online and check them out or stop in during Scottdale Fall Festival!

THE SCOTTDALE BANK & TRUST COMPANY

Scottdale Bank and Trust company was established on February 25, 1901. It is one of the oldest banks in Westmoreland County and one of the few banks in western Pennsylvania that did not fail after the moratorium in 1933. The first offices were in the Hill House Hotel and remained there until a new three-story bank building was complete, located at 161 Pittsburgh Street, Scottdale. In 1971 the bank moved to its present location. In January 1979, the Scottdale Saving and Trust company changed its name to the present name of Scottdale Bank and Trust. 1984 marked a significant milestone in the bank’s 83 year history by acquiring two additional offices, one in Connellsville and the other in Mt. Pleasant. The two offices were formerly Yough Valley National Bank. Presidents that have served are; J. W. Ruth (1901 - 1905), J. S. Parker (1906 - 1930) B. C. Fretts (1931-1933), B. F. Keister (1934 - 1938) D. C. Keister (1939 - 1964), Ray E. Kiefer (1965 - 1984), Marilyn K. Kiefer (1984-2002), and Donald F Kiefer (2002-present). Lynn Andras started working with the bank in 1972. She was excited to discuss the Scottdale Bank and Trust Companies history with the Scottdale Fall Festival. Lynn enjoys working for the bank and said, “at times it is challenging and difficult”. She likes the Scottdale community and enjoys the Scottdale Fall Festival. She went on to say that the community is warm and helpful. The Scottdale Bank was inspired to help the community of Scottdale. Lynn said, even though there are banks around, the Scottdale Bank and Trust Co. tries to provide a personal service with no gimmicks. The Bank employs around 56 full time employees in the four offices. The Scottdale Bank and Trust Co. offices are Scottdale, Countryside (Mt. Pleasant), Connellsville, and the Tri-town (Vanderbilt) Office. The hours of operations are: the lobby Monday thru Thursday 9 AM to 3 PM, Friday 9 AM to 7 PM, drive-in Monday thru Thursday 8:30 AM to 5 PM, Friday 8:30 AM to 7 PM, and Saturday 9 AM to 12 noon. Also, there is a 24 hour depository and letter drop. The Scottdale Bank and Trust Company continues to be locally owned, locally managed, and locally concerned. This allows them to provide all the advantages of a full service bank in a way that larger more impersonal banks cannot.

The Scottdale Public Library100 Years and Counting!

On November 07, 2010, the Scottdale Public Library will celebrate 100 years of service to the community. Through a vision of A.L. Keister ,and financial gifts from brothers Fenton and B.F. Keister, the establishment of a public library was presented to the town of Scottdale in 1921. The original collection was housed in the Scottdale High school, where it remained with annual funding from the Keister Family and the Scottdale School Board under the direction of Miss Daisy Mary Smith. After the death of Mr. Keister, the people of Scottdale enthusiastically voted to support the public library through taxation. The Borough of Scottdale formally took over the financial obligations on January 1, 1921 and continues to help support the library to this day. On August 1, of the same year, the library was moved from the high school to the Funaro Building on Pittsburgh Street where it remained for a little over a year. Many will remember the library’s next home on Pittsburgh Street at the Brennan Building which was formerly known as the Hurst- Cook Building. The second floor home of the library had wooden floors and a pin could be heard dropping among the 18,758 volumes on the tightly packed shelves. Ruth Kritschgau and Lucy Watson kept a close eye on books and no talking was permitted. In 1967 the library again moved by the forming the now famous book brigade across Pittsburgh Street to 231 and the Marion Eicher Building. The library expanded to 235 Pittsburgh Street under the directorship of Joann Guesman. The library saw the addition of the Beth Ann Johnson Children’s Room in 2000. Shortly after, the Library Board under the direction of Judith Ermine and Library Director, Patricia Miller began plans to raise funds for a new, permanent home for the library. The entire town joined forces to raise the funds necessary to construct the new building. A professional grant writer gave advice, national foundations, school children and a capital campaign raised the funds to receive a matching Keystone Grant. Glenn and Carole Johnson, the Marilyn K. Kiefer Foundation, Tom and Judy Ermine and Charles and Maryellen Fischer sponsored rooms in the new library. Once again the town gathered to move the library and the collection itself was moved in one day. The library was dedicated and opened in August of 2008. The circulation for the new library has increased by 47 percent. Continued support from the R.K. Mellon Foundation and a partnership with Jacob’s Creek Watershed Association made an adjoining garden area possible in the summer of 2010. Today, the library is constantly busy. You may visit the library 24 hours a day, seven days a week on their web site and reserve, renew or pay fines online. Miss Daisy Mary Smith, Edna Krouse, Elizabeth Thomas, Winifred Wagner, Ruth Kritschgau, Lucy Watson, Velva Reid, Irene Zozula, Jean Snyder, Joanne Guesman and Anita Fabian would be shocked at the number of programs Children’s Director Rhonda Allison conducts each year. Some of the earlier Directors may ask where the card catalog is and be surprised when they are directed to a computer. Each of these wonderful women and the boards they served under all contributed to the present community treasure that is the Scottdale Public Library.

Scottdale Fall Festival Scholarship Winner

The 2010 Scottdale Fall Festival scholarship is awarded to a Southmoreland senior. This person is involved in the community and has displayed leadership qualities. The 2010 Scottdale Fall Festival scholarship winner is Rachel Zaffina. Through her High school career Rachel was involved in many activities ranging from tennis to the art council. Rachel was the vice president of the class of 2010 and involved in many clubs. Rachel plans to attend St. Vincent College in order to earn her Bachelor’s degree in teaching. Her goal is major in elementary education and minor in special education. She said, “Being a teacher would help me give back the education I had been given, and hopefully be an inspiration to a student, just like the teachers have been for me.” She went on to say “Even if I was to only make an impact on one child’s life, it would be worth my time.” She would like to be that teacher that everyone is comfortable coming to, no matter what the situation. She would like to minor in special education because she believes those children are not given the same opportunities as the main stream students.

Frank Kapr Funeral Home Inc.In March of 1954 Frank Kapr Sr. started the Frank Kapr

Funeral Home. Today, Frank Kapr Junior operates the funeral home. Frank Junior started helping his father when he was 12 years old. Frank wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, which is why he operates the funeral home today. Frank said, “I love what I do, it’s my life.” The Frank Kapr Funeral Home is unique in several different aspects. The staff is really caring and respectful to the families who have lost loved ones. Also, the staff members try to make the service reflect the loved ones personality and what they liked to do. The funeral home also provides funerals for family pets. In 2002 Kapr built the Frank Kapr Community Center. The center was created to give the families a place to gather and spend time with each other. A garden was added to the right side of the funeral home a few years ago. Frank said, “The biggest reason I put in the garden was because I never had a back yard.” He went on to say that he also wanted a fountain when he was little. Therefore, a fountain was added to the garden and made a perfect center piece. Frank said this is the only funeral home in the area that has a garden and a community center. The only other funeral home to have these facilities is located in Pittsburgh. Frank loves the community and said Scottdale has changed over the years. He also said that the community continues to grow and evolves with the twenty-first century.
