Sonas MacLeanSonas was born and brought up on

the coast of Caithness in the farnorth of Scotland where she learnedan appreciation of the sea and a love

of coastal scenes and small harbours. Awarded a B.A in Drawing

and Painting she has received several awards and public

commissions and is a regularexhibitor throughout Scotland.

In her work she combines colour,composition and tones to distil theharmonies and moods she sees in

the landscapes around her.

Sonas is an exciting new talentappearing in the Ecosse catalogue

for the first time in 2006.

His art is highly collected and his designs for buildings suchas the Glasgow School of Art and House for an Art Lover have brought himlasting fame and much retrospective praise. He met the Artist MargaretMacdonald, who was to become his wife in 1893. They married in 1900.

Margaret Macdonald MackintoshA member of the “Glasgow Girls”, an active group of Artists based in Glasgowat the turn of the Century, Margaret Macdonald married Charles RennieMackintosh in 1900. The Glasgow Girls included Bessie Macnicol, Annie Frenchand Jessie M King, and all went on to greatly influence the Art Nouveau andIllustrative movements. Margaret often contributed to her husband’s projects.

has been a series of oils onArgentine Tango, which fits with a

desire to depict elegance in thehuman figure and harmonious

interaction between men andwomen. He took tango lessons for

over a year before his first picture onthe subject.

Born in Greenock, Andrew graduatedfrom Glasgow School of Art in 1988.

In his early twenties he received 2Elizabeth Greenshields awards,which enabled him to travel and

work in Italy and Spain, producingfigure compositions conveying a

timeless lack of action. He has hadone man shows, notably in

Edinburgh and Amsterdam and hasexhibited in many group shows

across Britain.

Alexander MillarAlexander Miller is a modern phenomenon firstpublished by Ecosse in 2004. Virtually unknown

until 2003 his humorous paintings have explodedon the art scene, most noticeably his paintingsdepicting flat capped men in a variety of poses.

Born in 1960 in the little village of Springfield, 5 miles from Kilmarnock, his images reflect

memories from his childhood. Although growingup in the 60’s, village life in Springfield was stuck

in what seemed more like the 40’s and theseimages have been the inspiration behind our

selection of prints.

Sam SkeltonBorn in Glasgow in 1949, Skelton began his

career as a graphic designer, studying atGlasgow School of Art and only recently - as

demand for his paintings has grown - hasconcentrated on art full-time.

Skelton’s subjects are nostalgic evocationsof Scotland’s industrial past: working classheroes, a couple on a park bench, children

at play, and groups of men in dark overcoatswatching football.

The influence of the great industrial painterJ S Lowry is clear and Skelton’s paintings

are suffused with the dark, low light ofScotland in winter often with the factory roof

on the horizon line.

Skelton exhibits in Glasgow, London andDublin and is being put forward for the

National Gallery, London, in 2006.

John Campbell MitchellBorn in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, he studied at RSA (Royal Scottish Academy) schools and settled in Edinburgh forthe rest of his life. A painter of expansive land scapes and seascapes he is best known for his work in oils but he wasalso a watercolourist of some merit. He was elected to the RSA in 1918 before his death in 1922.
