2017 SILVER BEAVER AWARD
Before Submitting a Nomination Contact the nominee’s Scout unit leaders,
District or Council leaders, religious leader, fellow members of civic organizations, spouse, and/or Scouts they have worked with over the years. Contact anyone that may help in gathering information to complete the
nomination form. Ask for reference letters, they are not required but are helpful to the selection committee. A maximum of three letters of recommendation, one per category, may be submitted along with the nomination.
Nominations by immediate family members are not recommended, but will be
considered.
Complete sections 1, 2 & 3 as completely and neatly as possible. Use of this form, and typewritten, is preferred and highly encouraged. If you don't know the exact dates of service (month/year or year) ensure you verify that the positions served are correct, not forgetting to add any awards received, including scouting, religious and civic. It is to the nominee’s advantage to amplify their service…completeness versus length is paramount. Be sure to add your nomination statement as to why you feel this Scouter should receive the Silver Beaver Award. Remember to have the completed application turned in to the Council Office no later than 5PM on Monday November 6, 2017.
You may • email the nomination form
(including any letters ofrecommendation) to DonaJohnston athttp://[email protected],
• print out the form and drop it off,• or mail it to the Council Office.
If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

Outdoor Ethics Offerings
At University of Scouting
The Chancellors are building a new College
into the structure for the 2017 University of Scouting. Opening on November 4th will be the College of Outdoor Ethics! This College will take the Outdoor Ethics/Conservation classes that you have found in previous years in the different/various Colleges and house them all in one easy to search location.
For those courses that are moving from their previous College, you will see them cross-listed in their previous location. For example, the Outdoor Ethics Orientation Course for Cub Scout Leaders that was listed at C-149.1 in last year’s catalog might appear as OE-100.1 this year in the Cub Scout College.
We have a couple of NEW offerings and some that we are bringing back after a hiatus. New this year for our female Scouts and Scouters only is the Women’s Backcountry Hygiene: Peeing, Pooping, Periods, and More (OE-400)! We will also have a brand-new class called Outdoor Ethics Guide – Why Should Your Unit Have One? (OE-200) and a Tread Lightly! Awareness Workshop (OE-100.3). Make sure that you check out these new
offerings. The Outdoor Ethics
Training Team looks forward to the ribbon cutting on our new College by filling our classes with excited students. This year’s classes include:
• OE-100.1 Outdoor Ethics Orientation for
Cub Scout Leaders (returning) • OE-100.2 Outdoor Ethics Orientation for
Boy Scout, Venturing and Sea Scout Leaders (returning)
• OE-100.3 Tread Lightly! Awareness Workshop (new)
• OE-101 BSA LNT 101 (returning)
• OE-200 Outdoor Ethics Guide – Why Should Your Unit Have One/ (new)
• OE-300 Conservation Awards and Program (returning from hiatus)
• OE-400 Women’s Backcountry Hygiene: Peeing, Pooping, Periods and More (new for females only)
• OE-500 Hornaday Award Program (returning from hiatus)
We look forward to seeing you there! Meredith Blackwood College of Outdoor Ethics Dean

SAVE THE DATE: 10th ANNUAL LDS
MERIT BADGE CLINIC
Calling all Scouts! Please save the date,
come participate in and celebrate together the 10th Anniversary of the Annual LDS Merit Badge Clinic November 10th and 11th, 2017. This event is open to all Scouts regardless of their Troop sponsorship or locale.
Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this Clinic is free of charge to all participants and features Merit Badge Counselors that are registered, trained and eager to share their time, experience and talents with Scouts seeking advancement opportunities!
Last year, 940 Scouts attended and worked on a whopping 1,998 merit badges. A total of 199 Scout Troops were represented across 11 Clinic venues. Scouts from the Triangle, outlying areas and as far away as New York attended. The Scouts collected 3500 pounds
Occoneechee Scout Sign November 2016 Vol. 13 #11 Page 5
of food for a number of local food banks, demonstrating that the Scout Slogan “Do a good turn daily” is written on their hearts.
Friday evening, November 10th will feature a three-hour Merit Badge Clinic block followed by morning and afternoon Clinic sessions on Saturday, November 11th. This looks to be a very special weekend for advancement opportunities, fun and fellowship with Scouts! We hope to surpass last year’s attendance and food donations as we celebrate 10 years of Scouting excellence at the Clinic!
For more information on this special 10th Anniversary Merit Badge Clinic go to LDSMeritBadgeClinic.com.
Registration will be available mid-October at www.meritbadge.info.
Look for the event under November 10th.
