VIBRATORY SCREED — FACTS AND COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONSIntroduction

Whiteman power vibratory screeds offer rugged, heavy-duty,rust-resistant, galvanized steel screed frames with aconvertible design that allows you to construct either an air orengine vibrated machine. Please be sure to fill out the warrantycard supplied with the machine. All warranties are void unlessthese warranty cards are on file with Whiteman Industries.

Heavy-duty Steel Construction — The Whiteman VibratoryScreed uses a triangular frame design, built to take the abuseof rough handling on a jobsite. Unlike the light-weight aluminumscreeds, the steel screed will hold its precise shape better onlong pours and over a longer period of time than aluminum.Additionally, the heavier steel screed will stay down on theforms and will not ride up during a pour like the lighter aluminumscreeds. The Whiteman Vibratory Screed weighsapproximately 14 pounds per foot.

Heavy-Duty Schedule 80 Top Pipe — The WhitemanVibratory Screed features a heavy-duty "schedule 80" top pipe(1" ID) to ensure structural integrity. Each section is threaded(1-15/16" - 16 TPI) to facilitate a coupling system which allowsvirtually any length of combinations. The fine thread adjustmentof the coupling system also allows for a slight crown or invertconfigurations.

Five Different Lengths — Whiteman Vibratory Screeds comein five lengths. 2 ft., 2-1/2 ft., 5 ft., 7-1/2 ft. and 10 ft. sections.NOTE: It is best to allow a minimum overhang past the forms.(6" to 12" is ideal.)

Standardization (Air and Engine Driven) — Whiteman usesthe same frame for both the air and engine driven screeds. The top pipe is drilled and tapped to allow air connections forthe air vibrators.

Screed Blades — The screed blades are constructed of 10-gauge galvanized steel to add rigidity and eliminate rusting. The front blades consist of two 1-1/2" high x 2" wide angles. This gives the screed blades 2-1/2 inches of concretesurcharge and 4 inches of screed surface. The rear (bull float)blade is a single blade 2-1/2" wide. A total of 7 inches ofconcrete surface contact is provided by the Whiteman Screed.

Bolt-on Blade Design — The Whiteman Vibratory Screedfeatures a bolt-on blade design to allow easy replacement ofworn or damaged blades.

Vibrator Air Screed — Air vibrators offer high frequency (upto 9500 VPM’s at 60 PSI) for excellent consolidation of lowslump mixes. The vibrators are placed on 30-inch centers andlocated at both front and rear blades for uniform vibration. Airconsumption is approximately 4CFM for each vibrator at 60PSI. Air Screeds come complete with air connecting hoses,on/off valve with volume control, air gauge and a full flow oilmist lubricator. (1 quart capacity)

Rotating Eccentric Shaft (RES) Vibratory Screed — Therotating eccentric shaft produces over 8000 VPM. The shaft isbuilt of 3/4" diameter, high strength steel with 1-3/8" diameterdual eccentrics bolted on 30" centers. The shaft is supportedby heavy-duty, solid-mounted pillow block bearings. (Thebearings are greaseable and provide long life and solidtransmission of vibration through the lower frame and bladesinto the concrete.)

Propelling the Screed — Several options are available formoving the screed during a pour.

1. Manual Winches — Heavy Duty 2500 lb., 2 speedwinches with 100 feet of 1/8" aircraft cable can be located oneither end of the screed or with the addition of a pulley kit, both sides of the screed can be winched from on side.

2. Hydraulic Winches — By adding a pulley to the rotatingeccentric shaft, power can be harnessed to drive a smallParker hydraulic pump. This pump provides power to an Eatondrive motor driving the winches located on either side of thescreed. The speed of the winch is variable from 0 to 12 feetper minute.

Inverts and Crowns — Whiteman Vibratory Screeds can bealigned to form inverts or crowns with the use of special Invert/Crown Brackets, Flex-Joint or U-Joint kits. Crowns of up to 1/4-inch per foot are considered normal. Most highwayspecifications call for 1/4-inch per foot or 2% crowns. (.25inches per 12 inches)

Commonly Asked Questions:

1. “How wide can I go with the Whiteman Vibratory Screed?”

Recommended maximum length is 65 feet for both air andengine driven screeds. With lengths over 20 feet, the engineshould be mounted on a center section of the screed. This increases efficiency and equalizes the load on thedriveshaft.

2. “What is the maximum slab thickness I can expect toeffectively consolidate?”

Like soil compaction, this is variable. It depends on theconcrete mix, type of forms used, travel speed and othervariables. The Rule of Thumb is: 8 to 9 inches for the REStype and up to 12 inches for the air screed.

3. “At what rate of travel should I work the screed?”

It varies. The men working the concrete should maintain aslight discharge of concrete in front of the screed. (Do not allowconcrete to flow over the screed blades by more than2-1/2".) As you move the screed forward, you should be gettinga nice, creamy surface behind the bull float blade. Increasethe travel speed until the surface deteriorates and then slowdown slightly to achieve maximum travel speed.

11. After the final alignment (see Fine Tuning on page 14)screw the jam nuts into place on both sides of theturnbuckles.

VIBRATORY SCREED — AIR DRIVEN SCREED ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONSThe Whiteman Vibrator operates @ 80 PSI consuming only4.5 CFM of air to provide effective consolidation of concretewithout over-vibration. 30" vibrator spacing is standard on theWhiteman Heavy Duty Air Screed.

Important Notice! The Whiteman #16073 Vibrator is designedto operate in the 7,000 to 8,000 VPM range, the frequencybest suited for concrete consolidation. This specially designedvibrator directs the work force downward, avoiding the flutter-floating action of off-shelf vibrators.

The Whiteman Vibrator receives necessary lubrication througha lubricator built into the air control system. The lubricating oilmust be lightweight and compatible with water. We recommendusing: SAE 10 wt. non-gumming type oil.

Vibrator Operating Tips

NEW MACHINE START UP:

1. FIRST REMOVE THE TAPE ON ALL VIBRATORS

2. Set the lubricator for maximum oil-flow.

3. Use SAE 10 wt. non-gumming oil to fill the hose fromthe lubricator to the top pipe of the screed.

4. Run the screed in interval bursts of air until all vibratorsare lubricating. An oil mist will be visible and oil can be feltat the exhaust ports.

5. HOW MUCH LUBRICATION? While the vibrator isoperating, place your hand about 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) froman exhaust port of the vibrator and keep it there for about30 seconds. (Two exhaust ports are on the same side asthe air inlet port and the other two are 180° from those).Do not remove the exhaust port seals. There should be alight film of oil on your hand if the vibrator is receivingproper lubrication. If no film of oil is visible, increase thelubrication rate.

6. Run the vibrators 2-3 minutes at a time for approximately15 minutes. This will seat the piston to the barrel.

Running the Machine

1. Do not fill the lubricator over 3/4 full. Turn the adjustingscrew slowly until it drips 2-3 drops/minute.

2. Keep clean oil in the lubricator at all times. Do not useregular engine oil.

3. Drain the lubricator and flush the system with cleaningsolvents as needed.

There are two methods for checking the accuracy of yourscreed.

Straight-line method:

1. Place the complete screed on the form edges.

2. Place a nail on the side of the form in front of the screedblades at both ends of the unit.

3. Tie a line to the nail at one end, pull it tightly tothe opposite end and secure it to the second nail.

4. Place a straight edge on the bottom of the screed bladeand compare it to the height of the taught line and adjustas necessary.

5. Using a large crescent wrench, turn the turnbuckle toadjust the screed blades to obtain the proper alignment.

6. Adjustments must be made at each screed junctionthroughout the entire screed.

7. Once the adjustment has been made, tighten all the toppipe jam nuts. Note: be careful not to move the turnbucklewhen tightening the jam nuts.

Measurement method:

1. Place the complete screed on the form edges.

2. Measure the height of the screed blades at each formedge.

3. Compare the height of each junction to the height at theends. Using a large crescent wrench, turn the turnbuckleto adjust the screed blades to obtain proper alignment.

4. Adjustment must be made at each screed junctionthroughout the entire screed.

5. Once the alignment has been made, tighten all the toppipe jam nuts. Note: be careful not to move the turnbucklewhen tightening the jam nuts.
