HELLO! my name is
What is a medical scribe?
• An integral member of a medical treatment
team who: – Assists in the ER or a clinic
to write patient medical charts
– Is interested in a future
career in medicine
– Wants to be ahead of the
curve in medical or PA school
This is SO much better than shadowing!
And what do they do?
• Accompanies medical providers to patient
rooms in the ER or clinics
• Listens to and documents patients’
complaints in the chart
• Records all follow-up care during the
patient’s stay, including:
– Physical findings during examination
– X-ray and other scan results
– EKG interpretations
See patient with provider
Exit room & review chart details with
provider
Enter labs, X-rays,
document consults &
more (advanced workflow)
Recheck patient and document treatment updates
Discharge or admit the patient
A typical scribe shift
Why doctors need scribes
• Most hospitals use electronic medical
records (EMR) for documentation—can
be time consuming for providers
• They want to spend more quality
time with patients
• They can see more patients
• Doctors are burning out
from long hours
& scribes can help!
Med school must haves
• Helps prepare you for med school with
real-time on the job training & valuable
clinical hours
• Turns book learning, like medical
terminology and A&P, into life learning
• Forge incredible mentorships
with providers who can…
• Write more meaningful
recommendation letters
I’m learning
while watching
and documenting.
How cool!

Do I need special training?
We’ve got
you covered Scribe U online was so helpful!
Not only did I master medical
terms, I learned what an HPI is,
how to write it, what signs are
associated with which diseases
and so much more!
Our docs teach on the job
And they have great advice...
Dr. Crowley from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall says: “So, you think you’re a good scribe? You could always be better. A few of my tips include 1. Be on time to your shift 2. Think like a doctor 3. Pay attention to the patient (LOOK UP from your screen
while documenting!) 4. Follow trends—start to recognize what symptoms match
which diseases 5. Be present mentally at all times 6. Ask questions and more questions”
Dr. Wasserman, Medical Director from Good Samaritan Hospital in New York says: “The best scribe keeps an open mind and tries to work within protocols while always asking the right questions to stay on their toes. My short list for the best scribe qualities are • Organized • Detail-oriented • Interested in learning more about medicine • Efficient • Has good oral and written communication skills”
I was a PhysAssist Scribe… My favorite scribing
experience was being part of the ER team. It
was a great way for me to kick off being a
lifelong learner!
Brian O. 1st year medical student
PhysAssist Scribe for 2.5 years
Jared K.
1st year medical student
PhysAssist Scribe for 2 years
I scribed from '08-'11 in DFW and helped PhysAssist start two programs. I'm currently a practicing ER PA in Tulsa, where my husband, who scribed from '09-'10, is a second year Emergency Medicine resident. We could not be more appreciative of the opportunities provided by scribing. We met each other and fulfilled our dreams as providers! Cassandra W., PA-C

Transitioning to medical school is
stressful as it is, but scribing set me way ahead of my peers!

Who is tutoring right for? Group prep classes are built to serve large groups of students and teach them the
entire test. If you only need to work on certain sections of the exam, are starting
very low on the scoring scale, need to achieve a 90th percentile plus score on the
exam, or if your schedule is just too hectic to work with a set prep-class schedule,
tutoring might be your best option.
