ALTERNATIVES TO REDUCING NOX AND SOX
10.11.2016 [Presentation name / Author]3
CHANGE TO MGO
Run full time on Marine Gas Oil
(MGO).
Convenient
Small investment
High operating cost
Future availability?
CONVERT TO LNG
Convert engines to run on gas
(LNG).
A solution which also reduces
NOx and particulates
Investment cost
LNG availability
USE Exhaust Gas Cleaning
Install an exhaust gas
cleaning system (scrubber).
Works with high S HFO
Lowest total lifecycle cost
Use everywhere
Easy operation
ROI depends on fuel oil price
difference between low S fuel oil
and high S HFO (scrubber)
FUEL SWITCH
Switch to low sulphur fuel in
SECA.
Flexible
Small investment
High operating cost in SECA
Fuel change over procedures
Lube oil TBN management
Fuel availability?
Short term solution

WÄRTSILÄ SCRUBBERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
6
• Efficient scrubbing technology, removing both SOx and particulate matter
• Scrubbing changes SOx back into sulphates, which occur naturally in seawater
• Our tests show that we often get far below the set equivalent of 3,5%S down to 0,1%S.
Thus removing even more sulphur oxides than required by the rules.
• Better for the environment than MGO, as it saves energy (refinery) and removes some
black carbon (PM ≤ 2.5 µm)
• Water treatment units installed on all installations – even in Open loop
• Water treatment will ensure compliance even at tricky conditions e.g. start-up.
• Water treatment will ensure that harmful heavy metals (from the engine soot) will not
be released into the environment

• Early experience on board Zaandam indicated that advanced open loop scrubbing water treatment was necessary, when problems with sheening arose.
• Problems with open loop water discharge will most often arise during start-up of the system, when a plume of particles will be going through the pipes. Without correct water treatment this will be discharged into the ocean and possibly lead to rule breaking.
• Wärtsilä is committed to following both current and future legislation, as well as providing the best and most environmentally sound technology for our customers.

SOLUTION FOR YOU

Open loop scrubber – sea water operations • Slightly higher power demand than CLS
• Does not need caustic soda
Applications: main alternative for ocean-going ships
Closed loop scrubber – closed loop operations• Independent on seawater alkalinity
• Zero effluent discharge an option
• Low power demand
• Needs caustic soda as a reagent
Applications: seas with extremely low alkalinity and for operators
looking for continued closed loop operation
Hybrid scrubbers – open loop / closed loop operations• Flexible system
• More complex system
Applications: ships requiring full flexibility of operations
