Delivery of Two Courses at the College

• Provide opportunities that our students would otherwise not have as EHS is a very small school and does not have a mechanical shop or welding facilities.

• Courses have a high practical component, which has been very popular with our students and has in part led to the very high success rate of our students in both of these courses.

Page 15: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Page 24: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Student Testimonial pg 2

• The Welding program is helping me clarify my future career goals by introducing me to new skills and opportunities in the trades industry. I’ve always had an interest in welding, and this program may allow me to pursue it in the future.

Page 25: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Student Testimonial pg 3

• The program has also helped me to obtain high school credits during the regular school day, but while giving me a small taste of the college experience. The field trips we have taken have further enhanced the value of this program. I would highly recommend that other students take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Has the program helped your students catch up on their credit counts?

• The dual credit courses offered at ESCHS over the last several years have enabled our at risk students to catch up on credits and graduate with their peers.

Page 36: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Program Benefits

• For some students taking CAD 1, it has introduced them and encouraged them to pursue their education in the Trades/Technological fields.

• Marketing and Business has also influenced College program choices.

Page 37: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Additional Benefit to DC

The other benefit, is that the students taking dual credit courses is that these courses transfer to their college programs or count towards elective courses enabling the students to have a reduced timetable.  This transfer of credit also happens across various colleges in Ontario.

Page 38: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

Has participation in the courses made a difference in your graduation rates?

• The dual credit courses have definitely made a positive impact on our grad rates.

• Without dual credit courses students would have to come back for an extra semester or take summer COOP as their only option to graduate and pursue post- secondary programs.  Many students who traditionally would not have graduated are not only graduating but are also going to college.

Page 39: SCWI RPT 4 ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF DELIVERY. College Campuses Moosonee Timmins Kirkland Lake Haileybury

In your opinion, what has been the most successful outcome of Dual credits for your students ?

• By far, the most successful outcome for our students is the ability to graduate in a timely manner with same age peers!

• When a student can graduate with their peers and get back on track after a rough or difficult start (due to unlimited number of circumstances) their hope, their self-esteem and their pride is restored.

• Seeing these students on stage receiving their diplomas makes all of us grateful that DSB ONE supports this initiative.

Final Comment

• At ESCHS we are EXTREMELY grateful for having this initiative a possibility, even within our small Northern School.

• The flexibility that was given to us in order to be able to offer the dual credit courses was sincerely appreciated.

•  Students are treated like “college level students” but also given the support they need to succeed.  I am very thankful that I got to be part of this initiative from the beginning and know that it has made a difference in our students’ lives and in their future!

•   Our dual credit teachers have also said that working for Northern College has been a very positive experience.
