October 04, 2016 the San Diego Section hosted the 2nd Section Technical Meeting of the 2016 – 2017 year. The meeting was held at the Seven Seas Lodge, 411 Hotel Circle South, San Diego, CA with 22 members and guests in attendance. The speaker for the evening was Mr. Randy

Jones from Inspection Technologies Inc.

The Title of his presentation: “Density Measurements of Carbon Based Composite Materials Using Eddy Cur-rent Techniques”

Carbon fiber composite materials are commonly used in aerospace applications but this light weight and very strong material is becoming more popular in automobiles, boats and sporting goods. What if we could add a way to test these materials in a different way to detect other changes in their material characteristics. The basic principle for an eddy current technique to work in a material is that the ma-terial must be conductive. While fiberglass and Aramid composite materials will not work with eddy current tech-niques carbon is minimally conductive. As such, to get a signal on the eddy current display that we can work with. Mr. Jones research using Eddy Currents was based on signal reflection. Mr. Jones presented how he arranged 7 samples in order of the screen deflection. When com-pared to the known densities of these 7 samples there was a direct correlation. This project is still in the research and development.

The talk was well received and had numerous ques-tions concerning; equipment used, what could be different in future studies, applications to other substrates. Chairman Aurapong McAnulty thanked Mr. Jones for his informative talk and presented him with a Certificate of Appre-ciation and a speaker gift. To close the meeting Chairman McAnulty acknowl-edged new first time attendees. The evening concluded with the regular raffles and a 50/50 cash raffle. Raffle prizes were sponsored by the Section and Larry Olsen. All in attendance had a good time.

one of their major treatment plants. The project included (at that time) the world’s largest pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete reser-voir, large diameter welded steel pipe, stainless steel process piping, chemical piping, storage and containment features, and associated structures. By the project’s end, he was promoted to Chief Inspector, and was responsible for quality assurance inspection, testing, and examinations for the Owner.

In 2004 he took a position with Richard Brady and Associates as a Resident Inspector and later as a Construction Manager for a major distribution and transmission pipeline(s) replacement project for the City of Huntington Beach, California and a pressure control and hy-droelectric facility project for the San Diego County Water Authority.

In 2006, Mr. Davis took a permanent position with San Diego County Water Authority (regional wholesaler, servicing 24 member agencies) as a Senior Engineering Technician, a position that he currently holds. Responsibilities include Quality Control and Quality Assurance oversight for major construction projects and off-site fabrication in-cluding large diameter steel pipelines, tunnels, pump stations, largest roller compacted dam raise project in the western hemisphere, sev-eral large diameter pipeline relines, and currently on the Carlsbad Desalination Project conveyance steel pipeline which is the largest desalination project in the western hemisphere. Mr. Davis is the Wa-ter Authority’s Subject Matter Expert for fabrication and field welding of steel pipe, and consults the Engineering Department and member agencies on welding design and issue resolution.

AWS Activities

Mr. Davis is the current Chairman of AWS Section 92 that represents San Diego California and Yuma Arizona (Student Chapter), and AWS District 21 (Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and Southern California) Deputy Director, and is a member for the City of San Diego Community Col-lege District, Yuma High School and Community College District and Grossmont Union High School District’s advisory panels for their welding programs.
