ForewordThe lessons for the fourth quarter of th is yea r

deal with the conditions prevailing in the worldat the eve of Christ's second coming, thereforewe 'as Adven tists who profess to be waiting withexpectancy for this greatest event in the universeof God, should observe every sign related to it.The subject of Christ 's second coming has been

preached for many years, yet with a large number,i t ceases to impress the heart or lead them tomake the needful preparation. The message fortoday is the most solemn that was ever given tomortals and yet there is a continual danger thatbecause of our very famil iari ty with the warningsGod has given, we will become lukewarm in ourexperience and fail to discern the signs of thetimes, and in one way or another allow ourselvesto become bewitched with the world's dream ofprogress and prosperity.

These le ssons are designed to call our atten-tion to the fast fulfilling signs of the end andthe position that God's people must take if theywould avoid the cunning deceptions of Satan inthese last days. We therefore urge all to prayer-fully and diligently study these lessons that theymay be "meat in due season."May this study lead both studen ts and teachers

to a deeper consecration and a more earnest"looking for and hasting unto" the coming ofJesus. May it lead our believers to draw closertogether in Christian fellowship, to unite inmaking intercession for the revelation of theHoly Spiri t, and to be as anxious in our expecta-tion of Christ 's second coming as were God'speople in 1044.

NOTE: "Prophecy not only foretells the manner and object ofChrist's coming, but presents tokens by which men are to knowwhen it is near." . He has warned the world of the day of final destruction,

and has given them tokens of its approach, that all who will mayflee fcom the wrath to come.."Christ had bidden His people watch for the signs of His

advent, and rejoice as they should behold the tokens of theircoming King. 'When these things begin to come to pass, ' He said,'then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption drawethnigh.' He pointed His followers to the budding trees of spring, andsaid: 'When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your ownselves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when yesee these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of Godis nigh at hand.' Luke 21:28,30,31" Great Controversy, pp.304,37,308.2. Why did Jesus censure the Pharise s? 6. What does the Lord call those servants who do not watch?Matt. 24:48.NOTE: "The evil servant does not say that Christ will notcome. He does not scoff at the idea of His second coming. Butin his heart and by his actions and words he declares that theLord's coming is delayed. He banishes from the minds of othersthe conviction that the Lord is coming quickly." Id., p. G3S.7. What will many say when confronted with the message ofChrist's soon coming? Isa. 56:12; 2 Peter 3:4.NOTE: "The world, full of r io ting, full of godless pleasure, isasleep, asleep in carnal security. Men are putting afar off thecoming of the Lord. They laugh at warnings. The proud boast ismade, 'All things continue as they were from the beginning.''Tomorrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.' 2 Peter3:4; Isa. S(i: 12. We will go deeper into pleasure loving. ButChrist says, 'Behold, I come as a thief.' Rev. l(i: IS. At the verytime when the world is asking in scorn, 'Where is the promise ofHis coming?' the signs are fulfilling. While they cry, 'Peace andsafety,' sudden destruction is coming. When the scorner, therejecter of truth, has become presumptuous; when the routine ofwork in the various money-making lines is carried on withoutregard to principle; when the student is eagerly seeking knowledgeof everything but his Bible, Christ comes as a thief." Id., p. (i3S.8. What preparation should God's people make for the great dayof the Lcrd? 1 Peter 1- 3-16.NOTE: "My accompanying angel cried out with awful solemnity,'Get ready! get ready! get ready! for the fierce anger of the Lordis soon to come. His wrath is to be poured out, unmixed withmercy, and ye are not ready. Rend the heart, and not the garment.A great work must be done for the remnant. Many of them aredwelling upon little trials. ' Said the angel , 'Legions of evil angelsare around you, and are trying to press in their awful darkness, that ye may be ensnared and taken. Ye suffer your minds to bediverted too readily from the work of preparation and the allimportant truths for these last days. And ye dwell upon littletrials and go into minute particulars of little difficulties to explainthem to the satisfaction of this one or that . ' ' ' Early Writings,p.119.

"N ow is the time to prepare. The seal of God will never beplaced upon the forehead of an impure man or woman. It willnever be placed upon th e forehead of the ambitious, world-lovingman or woman. It will never be p laced upon the forehead of men or

' Like the priests and teachersbefore the fall of Jerusalem, they look for the church to enjoyearthly prosper ity and glory. The signs of the times they inter-pret as foreshadowing this. But what saith the word of Inspiration?'Sudden destruction cometh upon them.' I Thess. 5:3. Upon allwho dwell on the face of the whole earth, upon all who make thisworld their home, the day of God will come as a snare. It comesto them as a prowling thief." Desire of Ages, p. G35.10. Matt. 24:44.NOTE: "As I hear of the ter rib le calamit ies tha t from week toweek are taking place, I ask myself, What do these things mean? The most awful disasters are following one another in quicksuccession. How frequently we hear of earthquakes and tornadoes,of destruction by fire and flood, with great loss of life and property! Apparently these calamities are capricious outbreaks ofseemingly disorganized, unregulated forces, but in them God'spurpose may be read. They are one of the means by which Heseeks to arouse men and women to a sense of their danger."The coming of Christ is nearer than when we first believed. The great controversy is nearing its end. The judgments of God

are in the land. They speak in solemn warning, saying, 'Be yealso ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of mancometh.' Matt. 24:44." .Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 252.5. have seen the gaiety, the display in dress, the personal adomment. All want to be thought brilliant, and give themselves up to hilarity, foolish jesting, cheap, coarse flattery, and uproarious laughter. The eyes sparkle, the cheek is flushed, conscience sleeps. Witheating and drinking and merrymaking, they do their best to forgetGod. The scene of pleasure is their paradise. And Heaven islooking on, seeing and hearing all " Counsels to Parents,p.340.9. The signs of thetimes are ominous. Coming events cast their shadows before. TheSpirit of God is withdrawing from the earth, and calamity followscalamity by sea and by land. There are tempests, earthquakes, fires, floods, murders of every grade. Who can read the future?Where is security? There is assurance in nothing that is human orearthly. Rapidly are men ranging themselves under the banner theyhave chosen. Restlessly are they waiting and watching the move-ments of their leaders. There are those who are wait ing and watch-ing and working for our Lord's appearing. Another class arefalling into line under the generalship of the first great apostate.Few believe with heart and soul that we have a hell to shun anda heaven to win." Desire of Ages, p. 636.11. To whom also do Ole words of James 5:1-3 apply?

NOTE: "I saw th at these fearful words apply particularly to thewealthy who pro-fess to believe the present truth. The Lord callsthem to use their means to advance his cau se. Opportunities arepresented to them, but they shut their eyes to the wan ts of thecause, and cling fast to their earthly treasure. Their love for theworld is greater than their love for the truth, their love for their

fellow-men, or their love for God. He calls for their substance, butthey selfishly, covetously, retain what they have. They give alittle now and then to ease their conscience, but have not overcometheir love for this world. They do not sacrifice for God. TheLord has raised up others that prize eternal life, and that canfeel and realize something of the value of the soul, and they havefreely bestowed their means to advance the cause of God. Thework is closing; and soon the means of those who have kept theirriches, their large farms, their ca ttle , e tc ., will not be wanted. Isaw the Lord tum to such in anger, in wrath, and repeat thesewords: 'Go to now, ye rich men.' He has called, but you wouldnot hear. Love of this world has drowned his vok:e. Now he hasno use for you, and lets you go, bidding you, 'Go to now, ye rich, men.

"Oh, I saw it was an awful thing to be thus forsaken by theLord, - a fearful thing to hold on to a perishable substance here, when he has said that i f we will sell and give alms, we can layup treasure in Heaven. I was shown that as the work is closing up,and the truth is going forth in mighty power, these rich men willbring their means and lay it at the feet of the servants of God,begging them to accept it. The answer from the servants of Godwill be, 'Go to now, ye rich men. Your means is not needed.Ye withheld it when ye could do good with it in advancing thecause of God. The needy have suffered; they have not beenblessed by your means. God will not accept your riches now.Go to now, ye rich men.' ' ' Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 174,175.7. What fearful doom will those hear who have not done forthe cause of God what was in their power to do? Matt. 2 ~ 41,46.8. needs in the time of trouble?NOTE: "The Lord has shown me repeatedly that it is contraryto the Bible to make any provision for our temporal wants in thetime of trouble. I saw that i f the saints had food laid up by themor in the field in the time of trouble, when sword, famine, andpestilence are in the land, it would be taken from them by violenthands and strangers would reap their fields. Then will be thetime for us to trust wholly in God, and He will sustain us." ECI1'lyWritings, p. 56.U. The things they once hated, they nowloved; and the things they once loved, they hated. The vain andsupercilious became serious and unobstrusive. The profane becamereverent, the drunken sober, and the profligate pure. The vainfashions of the world were laid aside. Christians sought not the'outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or ofputting on of apparel; but the hidden man of the heart, in thatwhich is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quietspirit, which is in the sigh t of God of great price.' Beforethe final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth, there willbe, among the people of the Lord, such a revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spiritand power of God will be poured out upon His children. At thattime many will separate themselves from those churches in which .the love of this world has supplanted love for God and His word. Many, both of ministers and people, will gladly accept those greattruths which God has caused to be proclaimed at this time, to pre-pare a"people for the Lord's second coming." ld., p. 4G4.6. What will Satan do to hinder God's work and keep souls in theapostate churches?NOTE: "The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work; andbefore the time for such a movement shall come, he will endeavLlfto prevent it, by introducing a counterfeit. In those churcheswhich he can bring under his deceptive power, he will make itappear that God's special blessing is poured out; there will bemanifest what is thought to be great religious interest. Oh, it is a great deception, a fascinating delusion, that takes possession of minds when men whohave once known the truth , mistake the form of godliness for thespirit and power thereof; when they suppose that they arc rich andincreased with" goods and in need of nothing, while in reality theyare in need of everything, ' ' ' Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 249,250.8. NOTE: "Yet none need to be deceived. In the light of God'sword it is not difficult to determine the nature of these movements.Wherever men neglect the testimony of the Bible, turning away fromthose plain, soul-testing truths which require self-denial and renunciation of the world, there we may be sure that God's blessingis not bestowed. And by the rule which Christ Himself has given,'Ye shall know them by their fruits,' Matt. 7:16, it is evident thatthese movements are not the work of the Spirit of God." What will the Lord send to such?NOTE: "One who sees beneath the surface, who reads the heartsof all men, says of those who have had great light: 'They are notaff lic ted and astonished because of their moral and spiritual condition.' Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their souldelighteth in their abominations. NaTE: "When Satan and th e Son of God first met in conflict,Christ was the commander of the heavenly hosts; and Satan, theleader of revolt in heaven, was cast out. Now their condition isapparently reversed, and Satan makes the most of his supposedadvantage. One of the most powerful of the angels, he says, hasbeen banished from heaven. The appearance of Jesus indicatesthat He is that fallen angel, forsaken by God, and deserted by man.A divine being would be able to sustain his claim by working amiracle; ' i f Thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it bemade bread,' Such an act of creative power, urges the tempter, would be conclusive evidence of divinity. It would bring the controversy to an en d.

NOTE: "In preaching the doctrine of the second advent, WilJiulI1Miller and his associates had labored with the sale purpose ofarousing men to a preparation for the judgment. They had soughtto awaken professors of religion to the true hope of the church, andto their need of a deeper Christian exper ience ; and they laboredalso to awaken the unconverted to the duty of immediate repentanceand conversion to God. 'They made no attempt to convert men toa sect or party ill religion. Hence they labored alllong all partiesand sects, without interfering with the ir o rgan ization or discipline.

"As his work tended to build up the churches, it was for a timeregarded with favor. But as ministers and religious leaders decidedagainst the advent doctr ine, and desired to suppre ss all agitationof the subject, they not only opposed it from the pulp it, hu t deniedtheir members the privilege of attending preaching upon the secondadvent, or even of speaking of their hope in the social meetings ofthe church. Thus the beli ever s found themselves in a position ofgreat trial and perplexity. They loved their churches, and wereloath to separate from them; but as they saw the testimony of God'sword suppressed, and their right to investigate the propheciesdenied, they felt that loyalty to God forbade them to submit."Id., p. 376.5. Who composed the remnant church in 1844?

NOTE: "Those who sought to shut out the testimony of Cod'sword, they could not regard as constituting the church of Christ,' the pillar and ground of the truth.' These were gaining an influenceover the minds of the inexperienced and unsettling their faith. Some were s ea rching the Bible to build up a faith of their own, independent of the body. Satan exulted in all this; for he knew thatthose who broke loose from the anchor he could affect by differenterrors and drive about with divers winds of doctrine. He gazed in pity on the remnant, then raisedHis hands, and w ~ t h a voice of deep pity cried, 'My blood, Father,My blood, My blood!' Then I saw an exceeding bright light comefrom God, who sat upon the great white throne, and was shed allabout Jesus. Then I saw an angel with a commission from Jesus, swiftly flying to the four angels who had a work to do on the earth, and waving something up and down in his hand, and crying with aloud voice, 'Hold! Hold! Hold! Hold! until the servants of God aresealed in their foreheads." Early Writings, p. 3G.2. Who only wil l receive the seal of God? 2 Tim. 2:19.

NOTE: "The day of God's vengeance is just upon us. The sealof God will be placed upon the foreheads of those only who sighand cry for the abominations done in the land. Eze. 9:5-6.NOTE: "Here we see that the church - the Lord's sanctuary was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God. The ,ancientmen, those to whom God had given great light and who had stoodas guardians of the spiritual interests of the people, had betrayedtheir t rus t. They had taken the position that we need not look formiracles and the marked manifestation of God's power as in formerdays. Times have changed. These words s trengthen thei r unbelief, and they say: The Lord will not do good, nei ther wil l Hedo evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in judgment. Thus'Peace and safety' is the cry from men who will never again liftup their voice like a trumpet to show God's people their trans-gressions and the house of Jacob their sins. The company ofguardian angels around them had been doubled, and they wereclothed with an armor from their head to their feet. They moved inexact order, like a company of soldiers. Their countenances ex-pressed the severe conflict which they had endured, the agonizingstruggle they had passed through. Yet their features, marked withsevere internal anguish , now shone with the light and glory ofheaven. They had obtained the victory, and it called forth fromthem the deepest gratitude and holy, sacred joy." Early Writings,p. 271.5. To whom does the right of succession as remnant churchbelong t i l l her final triumph? 2 John 8,9.NOTE: "This principle bears with equal weight upon a questionthat has long agitated the Christian world - the question of apos-telic succession. Descent from Abraham was proved, not by nameand lineage, but by likeness of character. So the aposte lic suc-cession rests not upon the transmission of ecclesiastical authority, but upon spiritual relationship. A life actuated by the apostles'spirit, the belief and teaching of the truth they taught, this is thetrue evidence of apostelic succession. This is what constitutesmen the successors of the first teachers of the gospel."
