Southland Hospital

Where will I work?

Located in New Zealand’s most southern city of Invercargill, Southland Hospital is a modern 180+ bed secondary level University teaching hospital.

All specialties and some sub-specialties are provided at Southland Hospital.

The Hospital is set on a large park like campus to the east of the CBD. Parking is available, and free, for staff and patients alike.

The Hospital is a short drive away to the seaside town of Bluff, well known for its oysters, and the Catlins—a place of hidden waterfalls and amazing treasures.

The CBD, with funky boutiques, cafés, bars and restaurants is located centrally and only 5 mins drive from the Hospital.

Southland Hospital is just a 2 hour drive from Queenstown or a ferry ride away from Stewart Island, and so there is always plenty of adventures to be had.

What work will I do?

House Officers, SHOs and Registrars are all part of the RMO team at Southland Hospital

House Officers and SHOs work across specialties including General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, ED, O&G, Paediatrics and Psychiatry .

Registrars also work across the specialties including, Anaesthesia, ED, General Surgery, General Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, O&G and Paediatrics .

What about training?

As a University teaching hospital, Southland Hospital is well suited to providing a great training experience to RMOs.

Regular teaching events available include formal teaching such as Ground Rounds, Journal Clubs and Radiology Meetings.

Southern DHB trainees are well supported to achieve the requirements set by their training body including access to exam prep-aration courses and other conferences or courses.

Southland Hospital RMOs have great access to the newly built simulation centre. This state of the art venue can be used for regular RMO teaching.

Where will I live?

The province of Southland offers a relaxed pace of life with Invercargill residents able to travel across town by car in about 10 minutes.

Due to the location of Southland Hospital, there are great opportunities to rent or buy. For those that wish to live further afield, many Southland residents will live rurally and travel to Invercargill for work daily.

Oreti Beach is a perfect place to head to in the weekends and after work. With 26 kms of smooth sand and beach to explore, it is no wonder motorcycling hero Burt Munro used this as his race track.

Who will I work with?

RMOs work in multidisciplinary teams that in-

clude students in training.

The traditional medical team model of Special-

ist, Registrar and House Officer exists at South-

ern DHB. This close knit team provides for a

supportive learning environment where bedside

teaching and other formal training is a regular

occurrence.

Southland Hospital Specialists work closely with

their RMOs and provide working experiences

that are designed to enhance and extend the

skills and capabilities of the RMO team.

What about my family?

Invercargill is a great and safe city for families to live in. Southlanders are, by nature, friendly folk who will make newcomers feel welcome and help them become part of the local com-munity.

The relaxed pace of Southland enables families to enjoy a fantastic work life balance. With the wonderful treasures of the Catlins, Fiordland and Queenstown at their doorstep, it is no won-der many families spend weekends and holidays experiencing the great outdoors.
