About the Speakers Professor Silvano Marchetti, creator and developer of the DMT and SDMT Silvano has been full time professor of Soil Mechanics at L'Aquila University in Italy. He had as teachers Prof. Jamiolkowski at Politecnico of Turin and Bishop, Skempton and Morgenstern at Imperial College in London. In 1981 he was visiting Professor at University of Florida (US) and carried out one year of teaching and research in cooperation with Dr. Schmertmann. He is Author of some 80 papers, mainly on practical foundation problems. He has delivered scientific presentations, general reports, keynote lectures to a large numbers of Universities, Conferences, Institutions. In 1980 he published the basic paper on the Flat Dilatometer (DMT) in the ASCE Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division. This article is one of the 78 Historical Papers selected for reprinting in the ASCE 2003 publication History of Progress: Selected U.S. papers in Geotechnical Engineering, which includes papers by pioneers like Terzaghi, Proctor, Casagrande, and Peck. Allan McConnell Allan is a geotechnical engineer, with 40+ years experience in Australia, SE Asia and the Pacific. He is the conceiver, developer and owner of the specialised geotechnical testing company Insitu Geotech Services (IGS). Allan has experience in most aspects of geotechnical engineering. He is known for his past consulting work on major development projects, including many on soft soil sites, and for his “crusade” to reduce risk and uncertainty in geotechnical engineering. It is this passion for reducing risk and uncertainty that led to the evolution of IGS. Allan’s company IGS operates several DMT and SDMT systems and has been using them on project sites in Australia for around 10 years. This includes local projects such as the major new highway bridge at Kempsey.
