June and July are the busiest months at Midlothian Public Library because of Summer Reading! Summer Reading is an important part of every child’s education. Numerous studies show that children who do not read in the summer lose reading skills, while the skills of those who do read hold steady or even improve, putting them in a better place to achieve academically come fall. Studies also show that family participation in literacy activities greatly benefit children’s learning. So this summer, whatever your age, make it your goal to read, read often, and to join together as a family in learning! Our summer reading theme this year is Reading by Design. This theme “is inspired by the creativity of authors, illustrators, builders, inventors, artists, architects, and everyone who makes our world a more interesting, livable, accessible, and beautiful place. In turn, we hope it inspires readers to explore their own creativity and design new worlds for themselves and for all of us” (iREAD). On a related note, this summer we will be offering a series of all-ages programs called Midlothian by Design, in celebration of the Village of Midlothian’s 90th anniversary. These programs will include an opening reception of a gallery wall and display case exhibit of photos and artifacts from the Midlothian Historical Society, a walking tour of Cottage Row at Midlothian Country Club, and a Tree Walk to view historic trees in Midlothian, co-sponsored by the Morton Arboretum. (See inside for more information!) Looking forward, the Tree Walk will lead into a number of opportunities to “go green” at the library in the coming months. In August, we will collaborate with Midlothian Park District, the Village of Midlothian, and the Morton Arboretum to begin the Community Tree Champions initiative to build a volunteer corps to inventory and care for trees in Midlothian. In addition, we have received a PLACE (Public Libraries Advancing Community Engagement) grant to offer a series of adult education programs on climate change. Far from being boring or academic, this series is designed as a “book club meets science café” about ordinary citizens’ resilience and adaptation to extreme weather events. Discussions will be co-facilitated by a librarian and a NOAA scientist. The library enjoys the support of Rain Ready in this effort. Stay tuned for our August- September newsletter for details. In the meantime, enjoy reading, enjoy family, enjoy Midlothian, and enjoy nature! As she tries to research a murder and a case of switched identities, she starts becoming part of the story.
