Catherine Howe specializes in modern andcontemporary American art, the history ofphotography, and the ways in which the historyof art dovetails with the history of scienceand technology. At Williams, she teaches theintroductory survey to Western Art, the historyof photography, and seminars such as

We’re particularly excited to introduce you toTarragona, a seldom-visited yet spectacular ancient gem that is the oldest Romansettlement in all of Spain. View the Pont del Diable, a stunning bridge thatformed part of a Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century B.C. TUESDAY, APRIL 21: VALENCIA, SPAIN After lunch, call at Valencia, the “City of Gold.” Discover the Old Town with its UNESCO-recognized Lonja de la Seda, a former trading center and silk exchange; the Central Market; and the spectacular 14th- to 15th-century cathedral. Admire the striking architecture of the famed City of Arts and Sciences complex designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava. Here you may enjoy entrance to the museum complex or take a guided walking tour of the old city before returning to Sea Cloud II. B,L,D

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22: TARRAGONA, SPAIN Arrive this afternoon in Tarragona, the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Visit the Pont del Diable, an imposing bridge that formed part of an ancient Roman aqueduct. Then take a guided visit to the Archaeological Museum, founded in the 19th century and host to the remnants of the Roman wall. We will also tour the Roman Circus, where horse and chariot races were held in the 1st century. Later, visit the Roman Amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century and remodeled in 224 A.D. Return to the ship in time for a midnight sailing. B,L,D

THURSDAY, APRIL 23: DAY AT SEA After a morning lecture, savor your last day sailing as Sea Cloud II makes her way to Côte d’Azur. Observe the crew as they practice the art of trimming the sails by hand. B,L,D

FRIDAY, APRIL 24: MARSEILLE, FRANCE Arrive this morning in the lively port city of Marseille. Tour the 19th-century Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde and the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art, housed in a cutting-edge building. Return to the ship for a special Marseille-inspired lunch while you enjoy an afternoon onboard sailing along the French Riviera. B,L,D

SATURDAY, APRIL 25: NICE, FRANCE / RETURNDisembark Sea Cloud II early this morning and transfer to the airport for flights home. B

An optional postlude in Nice and the French Riviera is offered from April 25–28, 2020.

THURSDAY, APRIL 16: DEPARTUREDepart by air for Seville on an overnight flight.

FRIDAY, APRIL 17: SEVILLE / CÁDIZ, SPAIN Arrive today in Seville, Spain, and drive to Jerez de la Frontera for a tasting of its native sherry. Transfer to Cádiz, an ancient port city. Enjoy lunch before exploring the city’s landmarks. Start at the 16th-century Plaza de San Juan de Dios in the heart of the city, and admire the beautiful town hall and the Basilica of San Juan de Dios. Step back in time to the Roman Theatre, the oldest in Spain, dating from the end of the 1st century B.C. Finish at the Cathedral, which was begun in the 18th century and took over 100 years to build; its architectural styles range from Baroque to Rococo to Neoclassical, and the building is host to a beautiful, elaborately carved wooden choir stall. Transfer to Sea Cloud II and set sail for Gibraltar this evening. L,DSATURDAY, APRIL 18: GIBRALTAR, UNITED KINGDOMBe on deck as Sea Cloud II approaches the legendary Rock of Gibraltar. Step ashore and transfer to the Europa Point Lighthouse for magnificent ocean views. Then make your way to the Apes’ Den to see the famous Barbary macaques, and visit the Great Siege Tunnels, a series of passageways In the northern end of the Rock. Following lunch, attend a lecture during an afternoon at sea. This evening the captain hosts a welcome reception and dinner. B,L,R,D

SUNDAY, APRIL 19: MÁLAGA / MOTRIL, SPAINIn the port city of Málaga, birthplace of Picasso, enjoy an exclusive, before-hours visit to his eponymous museum. After lunch, stroll through the exquisite palace courtyards, with their grand vistas, and the gardens of the Generalife, featuring water courses and fountains. TUESDAY, APRIL 21: VALENCIA, SPAIN After lunch, call at Valencia, the “City of Gold.” Discover the Old Town with its UNESCO-recognized Lonja de la Seda, a former trading center and silk exchange; the Central Market; and the spectacular 14th- to 15th-century cathedral. Admire the striking architecture of the famed City of Arts and Sciences complex designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava. Here you may enjoy entrance to the museum complex or take a guided walking tour of the old city before returning to Sea Cloud II. B,L,D

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22: TARRAGONA, SPAIN Arrive this afternoon in Tarragona, the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Visit the Pont del Diable, an imposing bridge that formed part of an ancient Roman aqueduct. Then take a guided visit to the Archaeological Museum, founded in the 19th century and host to the remnants of the Roman wall. We will also tour the Roman Circus, where horse and chariot races were held in the 1st century. Later, visit the Roman Amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century and remodeled in 224 A.D. Return to the ship in time for a midnight sailing. B,L,D

Enjoy lunch before exploring the city’s landmarks. Start at the 16th-century Plaza de San Juan de Dios in the heart of the city, and admire the beautiful town hall and the Basilica of San Juan de Dios. Step back in time to the Roman Theatre, the oldest in Spain, dating from the end of the 1st century B.C. Finish at the Cathedral, which was begun in the 18th century and took over 100 years to build; its architectural styles range from Baroque to Rococo to Neoclassical, and the building is host to a beautiful, elaborately carved wooden choir stall. Then take a guided visit to the Archaeological Museum, founded in the 19thcentury and host to the remnants of the Roman wall. We will also tour the Roman Circus,where horse and chariot races were held in the 1st century. Later, visit the RomanAmphitheatre, built in the 2nd century and remodeled in 224 A.D. Start at the 16th-century Plaza de San Juan de Dios in the heartof the city, and admire the beautiful town hall and the Basilica of San Juan de Dios.Step back in time to the Roman Theatre, the oldest in Spain, dating from the end ofthe 1st century B.C. Finish at the Cathedral, which was begun in the 18th century andtook over 100 years to build; its architectural styles range from Baroque to Rococo toNeoclassical, and the building is host to a beautiful, elaborately carved wooden choirstall. TRAVELING WITH YOUNicholas Howe teaches at the intersection ofenvironment and culture. A geographer by training,he teaches courses on landscape interpretation,the politics of climate change, religion andenvironmentalism, and the role of rivers insociety. He authored Landscapes of the Secular:Law, Religion, and American Sacred Space (2016)

and co-authored Climate Change as Social Drama (2015). Nicolasholds a B.A. from Columbia and an M.A. and Ph.D. from theUniversity of California, Los Angeles.

Catherine Howe specializes in modern andcontemporary American art, the history ofphotography, and the ways in which the historyof art dovetails with the history of scienceand technology. At Williams, she teaches theintroductory survey to Western Art, the historyof photography, and seminars such as

“Ambrotypes to Instagram: The History of the PhotographicPortrait.” Catherine holds a B.A. from Barnard College and anM.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The Spanish Riviera and Côte d’Azur are as historic as they are beautiful,dotted with venerable Roman ports and archaeological marvels dating backmillennia. Join us as we sail the Mediterranean coastline from Cádiz to Nice onthe elegant Sea Cloud II, stopping to behold the dazzling masterpieces of artand architecture that inspired everyone from the Phoenicians to Picasso. Weare thrilled to feature two Williams study leaders for further educational enhance-ment to this special itinerary: Nicolas Howe, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Faculty Affiliate in Anthropology and Sociology, and Catherine Howe, Lecturer in Art.

In Cádiz, the lively ancient port city, admire the oldest Roman theaterin Spain and gaze at the formidable 18th-century Cathedral. Board Sea Cloud II and sweep through the famous “Pillars of Hercules” to Gibraltar, where youwill ascend to the top of its mighty rock. Vibrant Málaga, birthplace of Picasso,awaits, and then Granada, where you will roam the exquisite palace courtyardsof the UNESCO-listed Alhambra and the fountain-filled gardens of the Generalife.

After a marvelous day on the high seas, call at Valencia to discover its majesticOld Town and the castle-like Lonja de la Seda, a 15th-century silk market andawe-inspiring Gothic masterpiece. We’re particularly excited to introduce you toTarragona, a seldom-visited yet spectacular ancient gem that is the oldest Romansettlement in all of Spain. View the Pont del Diable, a stunning bridge thatformed part of a Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century B.C. A private guidedtour of Tarragona’s Archaeological Museum is available, and you can explore thecity’s Roman circus and amphitheater. The vividly blue waters of the Côte d’Azurwill carry you to Marseille, where you will bask in the murals and Byzantine mosaicsof the 19th-century Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde, and hurtle back to thefuture at the city’s cutting-edge Museum of Contemporary Art.
