Seal Removal

• Use the proper personal protective equipment, including safety glasses.

• Place the hub on a wooden surface to protect the machined surfaces of the hub.

Seal Removal

• Use a seal removal tool to remove the seal from the hub.

• Do not strike the bearing to push the seal from the hub.

Component Inspection

• Clean and inspect the hub and all of the components.

• Replace components as necessary.

Seal Replacement

• Read and follow the instructions provided with the new seal.

• Some seals require the use of a designated seal driver.

• Some seals will require that the outside diameter of the seal be lubricated for installation.

Seal Installation

• Clean the seal bore on the hub.

• It may be necessary to use emery cloth or Scotch-Brite to remove nicks, burrs, or foreign material.

• Wipe the seal bore clean.

• Lubricate the inner bearing with the lubricant that will be in the wheel end and place it into the hub.

Seal Installation with Tool

• For seals that require an installation tool, follow the seal manufacturers’ installation instructions.

• Note that you might be required to lubricate the outside diameter of the seal for proper installation.

• Position the seal onto the seal installation tool.

• The seal manufacturer may require that the outside diameter of the seal be lubricated.

• Use a mallet to drive the seal into the seal bore of the hub.

• Drive the seal in until the seal or the seal driver bottom out.

• Visually inspect the seal to insure that it is fully and evenly seated into the seal bore of the hub.

Seal Installation by Hand

• For hand installable seals, follow the seal manufacturers’ installation instructions.

• Note that you may be required to lubricate the outside diameter of the seal for proper installation.

• Lubricate the inner bearing with the lubricant that will be used in the wheel end and place it into the hub.

• If required by the seal installation instructions, lubricate the outside diameter of the seal.

• Press the seal by hand evenly into the bore.

• A rubber mallet or other soft faced tool may be used to gently tap the seal into the bore.

• Be sure the seal is evenly seated and bottomed in the bore.

• Visually inspect the seal to insure that it is fully and evenly seated into the seal bore of the hub.
