Sealless Magnetic CoupledCentrifugal Pumps acc. to EN 22858 / ISO 2858
Type KML / KMB / KMR / KMV
General
DICKOW-pumps of the series KM are seallesscentrifugal pumps. The static containment shell forms a closedsystem with hermetically sealed liquid end.
Applications
Magnetic driven KM-pumps are designed toimprove plant and personnel safety.Especially when handling toxic, explosive orother dangerous liquids which react on contactwith the atmosphere. The KM-pumps operatemaintenance-free and the magnet couplingsreplace double acting mechanical seals withexternal fluid reservoirs and the necessarycontrol equipment.
Maximum capacity appr. 70 m 3/h (300 US-gpm),differential head 65 mLC (213 ft).Temperature range -30°C to 200°C (-34°Fto 390°F), working pressure 16 bar (232 psi).
Hazardous area
Together with the required Ex-drive motors, theKM-pumps can be applied in hazardous areaGroup II, Category 2. The pumps meet the basicsafety and health requirements of Explosion-proof Directive 94/9 EC and are suitable forplants with increased safety requirement. For close coupled pumps (KMB/KMV) thecontainment shell temperature is limited whenusing ex-motors. The values are available onrequest.
Designs
Horizontal design KML/KMB/KMRThe pumps are single stage, volute casingpumps with closed impellers, back-pull-outdesign, with end suction and top dischargeflange. Sturdy legs are provided for footmounting on the base plate.Capacity and casing dimensions complywith EN 22858 / ISO 2858.
Vertical design KMVType KMV is available as a space savingvertical inline-design.
Containment shell
The containment shell is designed as apressurized vessel to separate the pumpagefrom the atmosphere.
The containment shell is not used as anadditional bearing holder. No dynamic stressoccurs.
The containment shell is bolted to the bearinghousing in a manner that allows removal of thebearing bracket (KML/KMR-pumps) respectivelyof the drive motor (KMB/KMV-pumps) togetherwith the drive rotor without draining the pump.
Magnet coupling
The single elements of the multipolar magnetcoupling are manufactured of permanentmagnet material Cobalt Samarium with unlimitedlifetime. The magnets in the driven rotor arecompletely encapsulated, not in contact withliquid. Power is transmitted to the hermeticallysealed liquid end by a bank of external magnets.Inner and outer magnet rings are lockedtogether by magnet forces and work as asynchronous coupling. The inner magnet ringtransmits the required torque direct to theimpeller. Overload of the magnet coupling andslipping will not cause demagnetization iftemperature monitoring is available. Themagnets are designed for electric motors, directon line starting. Should a subsequent increaseof motor power be required, i.e. when installing alarger impeller, the nominal power of couplingcan be increased with additional magnets.
The maximum drive power is approx. 17 kW at2900 min -1 (28 HP at 3500 min -1).
Internal clearances
The internal clearance between rotor andcontainment shell is appr. 1,0 mm.
Containment shell protection
The clearances between drive rotor and motorsupport lantern respectively between bearingbracket and containment shell are arrangedsuch that rubbing of the magnets on thecontainment shell will be avoided, even in thecase of worn out ball bearings.
Casing drain
Complete drainage of casing and magnet end ispossible through casing drain. No additionaldrain in the containment shell area is required.
Outer ball bearings
The drive shaft and the drive rotor of KML-pumps are made of one piece. The drive unit issupported by generously dimensionedantifriction bearings, grease filled for life andprotected against environment by a radial sealring.
KMB/KMV-pumps have the drive magnet fixedon the motor shaft in overhung position. No additional antifriction bearings (as neededin KML-pumps) and no flexible couplings arerequired.
The drive shaft of KMR-pumps is carried bygenerously dimensioned oil lubricated antifrictionbearings, rated for 25000 operating hours. Theoil bath is protected against the atmosphere by alabyrinth seal. Oil level is controlled by aconstant level oiler and an additional sight glass. The oil chamber is sealed against the magnetcoupling also by a labyrinth seal.
Sleeve bearings
The pump shaft is carried in a sleeve bearing, positioned in the pumped liquid. Standardmaterial is pure sintered Silicon Carbide withdiamond layer for dry-run capability. SiC ishighly resistant to corrosion and wear andapplicable for all kinds of liquid. Its highhardness and wear resistance grants bestpossible availability. The Silicon Carbide partsare shrink fitted or elastic mounted andtherefore, protected against shock and thermalstress.
NPSH-conditions
The fact that the internal circulation flow withelevated temperature is led back to dischargehas no influence on the NPSH-value. Specialimpeller design achieves low NPSH-conditions.
Balanced thrust loads
The thrust loads of the closed impellers arehydraulically balanced by impeller back vanesand injection holes. Any remaining loads areabsorbed by the thrust bearings.
Monitoring
Connection for temperature detection elementfor containment shell surface temperature isavailable as standard. Dry running protectionand monitoring of ball bearings and containmentshell temperature with the patented "mag-safe"system is highly recommended.
Internal circulation
Pumps in operation generate eddy currents inthe metallic containment shell which heat up theproduct in the gap between rotor andcontainment shell. This heat is dissipatedthrough an internal circulation. The internalcirculation flows from discharge, directly behindthe impeller, through the magnet area and is ledthrough the pump shaft. Shaft bores create apressure increase forcing the circulation back tothe volute casing.
The effect of pressurizing the magnet end andthe sleeve bearing prevents vaporization of thepumpage in this area.
