SLOT SEAM and its use in garments
What is a seam?
A seam is a joint between two pieces of fabric or it is ‘the
application of a series of stitches or stitch types to one or
several thickness of material’.
Types of seams
• Plain seam
• Lapped Seam
• French seam
• Flat and fell seam
• Bound seam
Slot seam
A seam in which a backing strip, beneath the folded seam
line, holds two sections of the garment in place with stitching
parallel to the finished seam line.
It adds durability to the seam and decreases abrasion.
Sewing Method
Step1: Plain seam using basting stitch.
Step2: Cut a strip of fabric, that is of the same width as the
two seam edges.

HOW
• Step3:Lay the strip in place and Turn everything over with the correct

• Step 4: stitch 1/4 inch away from the seam line with a
straight stitch down one side and then back down the
other.

• Step5: Turn to the correct side and remove the basting
stitches to reveal the hidden fabric in the "slot"
Properties and uses of Slot Seam
• Used As a decorative seam finish for tailored garments
usually resembles an inverted pleat.
-When a contrasting colour or textured underlay
