Computer Help Center

Second Year competition WinneR

The 4Help Service Center is a place on the campus of Virginia Tech where students and faculty can go to get help with anything computer or technology related. In addition to its role as a building where one can receive computer assistance, the 4Help center also functions as a place of assembly. Members of the university and residents of the surounding town of Blacksburg can use the stairs and rooftops as areas for gathering.

VIRtualApartments

In a world in which virtual reality is a luxury, some people are able to work from anywhere, while others are grounded with more traditional occupations. The freedom that virtual workers have allows them to lead a more itinerant lifestyle.

Virtual workers do not own houses; instead they rent living space inside duplexes owned by non-virtual workers. The living quarters of the both the renters and owners is connected directly to the common living area that is shared by all residents of the duplex in an effort to maximize interaction. This deeper connection allows visitors to have more meaningful experiences at each of the locations that they visit.

Community Arts Center

For the third year competition, the objective

was to design a place that could serve as

a residence and studio for a visiting artist,

as well as a public gallery. The building’s

design is a balance between the emulation

of characteristics of surrounding historic

structures and more modern elements

that to properly address the current time,

while still allowing the to fit in with its

surroundings. As a more civic-minded

gesture, the stairs leading to the gallery

terrace double as seating for a live outdoor

music venue, with the hope being that it acts

as a destination for community gathering.

Room AND Garden

The room and garden project is

an exercise in thinking small. The

only constraints were a sloped

site, a room totaling 96 sqaure

feet, and an outdoor space.

The exterior space is inspired

be Japanese gardens, with its

meandering yet controlled path

to the room, which acts as a

focal point. The room serves as

a meditation space at the end

of the path and features many

exposed details that display

a higher level of refinement.

The clips on the edges of the roof that

connect the polycarbonate panels to

the steel tube structure are deceptively

simple. Through an in-depth study, which

included the full-scale construction of

the detail, issues were revealed with the

original intended joint. The new roof clip

that was devised as a conclusion to the

study features a removable C-shaped

clip, which allows for more tolerance

and easier installation of the roof panels.

It also allows for possible replacement

of damaged clips or roof panels that

would not have been possible with the

welded assembly of the previous clip.

Salt and Pepper ShakersThese shakers were designed

using the language of De Stijl.

As such, they aim to have the

simplest form possible. The color

scheme follows De Stijl ideas,

while also helping to differentiate

the salt and pepper. The caps are

removable to allow for easy refills.

The line element between the two

shakers acts as both a place to

rest one’s fingers while in use and

a stand to prop both shakers up

while they are sitting on the table.

Naef ToyDesigned as part of a competiton

for the toy company Naef, this

product had to be designed to

appeal to people of all ages.

It achieves this goal by having

a variety of functions. Younger

children can enjoy the bright

colors and comfortable feel of

the different pieces. They can

also use it to learn fractions in

a more interesting way. Older

children and adults can use it to

make two dimensional mosaics

and three dimensional constructs.
