NEWSLETTER 2 February 9 2017 Sean’s Spot: Kia ora Lemonwood Grove School Community As part of our first year as a learning community we will experience many ‘firsts’! On Thursday we had our first Celebration of Learning in Tui. Esther and Connor - two of our senior students - did an epic job leading and it was fantastic to have a representative from each whanau group come up and give a report on their learning over the last week. Well done Summer, Ross, Jackson and Michaela. Thank you to all the parents and community members who joined us. Please encourage others to come along next time as our learners appreciate your support! Future dates are advertised on the calendar in the ‘News’ section on the website. You may have noticed that we are not currently giving out certificates. As part of our learning principle around authentic and purposeful assessment, we believe in the importance of instant and ongoing feedback. This means that when a learner achieves success at Lemonwood Grove, they are recognised and acknowledged immediately. However sometimes our learners may be presented with certificates for other achievements for example, sport. Our learners are adjusting very well to their new learning spaces. Already we are seeing many examples of active listening skills, being in the right place at the right time, self management, leadership and Tuakana–teina (older students supporting younger students). We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team who are constantly modelling and scaffolding our Lemonwood Grove standards and expectations. Have a great weekend with your families and make the most of the late summer weather. Ka kite [email protected]

Welcome this week to….. Imogen and her parents Sarah-Jane and Russell who have just immigrated from the UK. Enjoy your days at Lemonwood Grove Imogen.

Imogen being presented with her special Tarata Tree by her whanau teacher Sophia.

Message from our Establishment Board Chairperson: Tracey Riley Happy New Year! We hope you, your whānau and friends have had a great break and the chance to enjoy some summer sunshine. A very warm welcome to everybody joining our school community. So very nice to meet most of you at the Mihi Whakatau on our first day. Didn’t the learners look smart! We were so proud to be able to see the look of excitement as the learners headed into the learning landscapes to start the first day. How lucky are we all to be part of a new school environment. Congratulations to Sean and his team for planning a fantastic and exciting programme to start the year off - there is certainly positive engagement, happy learners and plenty of learning happening. A lot of hard work has occurred to be ready for day one. It is business as usual for the Establishment Board. We still have plenty to do before we step down in June after the process of the school community board election. A big event on the horizon is the Official Opening being held on Friday 17 March at 10.30am. There will be more information regarding both events in the near future. Thank you very much for your support over the establishment phase. This has been very much appreciated. You may have heard the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” … so true and relevant to what we believe in at Lemonwood Grove School. Tracey and the Establishment Board of Trustees

Traffic Safety Team Thanks to the year 6-8 learners who will be joining the Traffic Safety Team. Constable Rick Groen will be training these students on Monday (13th February) and then showing all of our learners how to cross the road safely when the team is “on patrol”. He will also run a 30 minute session after school for our staff and any parents who are interested in supervising the team on a rostered basis. For more information, please refer to the letter which went home with our year 6-8s on Tuesday.

Before School Basketball for Year 7/8s Please see the attached flyer from Amy McClintock from the Selwyn Sports Trust. These are Friday morning skills sessions for our year 7 and 8s and take place at Clearview Primary School .

Reminders this week Uniform We have a collection of unnamed polar fleeces in the Tui and Kereru spaces. If your child is missing their polar fleece can you please come in and check? Please make sure that all clothing items are clearly labelled. We are teaching our learners to take responsibility for their own belongings and would appreciate it if you could work with us on this. Helmets If your child is either scootering, skateboarding or biking to and from school they must wear a helmet. Again your support around this would be appreciated. Safety Vests These will hopefully be delivered next week. Every learner will be issued with a vest which has kindly been donated by the Selwyn Rural Women’s Assn. As a staff we have decided that it needs to be worn when: walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding to and from school, all Education Outside of the Classroom events and experiences as well as travelling in a car. We know this may seem unnecessary however when we grow, the carpark will become very busy. We feel it is important that our students are safe and can be seen at all times when exiting and entering a car.

Communication Guidelines Please make sure you are familiar with these guidelines. Communication Guidelines

School Banking

Thank you to Kylie from ASB who spoke at our Celebration of Learning on Thursday about school banking and saving. Today your child will bring home an application form for you to fill out if you are interested. Our school banking day is every Thursday. The dropbox is in reception in the bookcase. ASB are still offering the $500 donation to schools when a client takes a Home Loan with ASB (over $250k and owner occupied). The client needs to request this donation for Lemonwood Grove

School with an ASB staff member.

Absences If your child is going to be absent for any reason we currently have two systems in place:

● Email [email protected] ● Ring the school office and leave a message. The recorded message will give you directions.

This will be checked regularly.

Activity Costs We have put together a spreadsheet of anticipated activity costs that will come up throughout the year. This will be a working document and we will let you know when there are updates. The purpose of this is to inform families of the costs of activities like trips, camps and swimming so you can plan ahead for these costs. Active After-School Programme. Amy McClintock from The Selwyn Sports Trust is running this after school sports programme on Tuesdays at 3:30pm here at Lemonwood Grove School. Please see the details in the poster. To register or for more information, please contact Amy directly [email protected]. Please note that parents and caregivers need to be present during the sessions. Details Here

L.I.N.C Time (Learners, interacting, networking and collaborating) When our learners arrive from 8:30am they are encouraged to participate in L.I.N.C time. Every day there are a series of different ‘play based’ stations set up across our Learning Landscape. Our learners can choose which activity best meets their needs. This week we had fun programming Bee Bots with Nick, making playdough sculptures with Jen, creating structures and shields as part of box construction with Sophia, and creating circuits with our new science kits with Jennie. Our Learners have the choice to join L.I.N.C time. Some prefer to head outside to play on the adventure playground, race around on their scooters or head to sandpit before the music goes at 9:00am!

Abbey made these amazing dinosaurs during LINC Time this week.

New Whānau Information Wall in reception Please see Sarah if you would like to add something to this wall that has a connection to Lemonwood Grove School, the Faringdon or Rolleston community.
