Aspectivity June 2015

June, AGM time. The year has flown buy, so I looked back through the Aspectivities for the year (not so easy, as some are password protected now, and at least one is duplicated, and the next month missing) I am sure these are just teething troubles and will soon be fixed. The password is 1234varms and will apply to the last 3 Aspectivity issues.

So, this time last year we were getting the vintage glider thing going, with several being built, but not by the newbies I had expected. Maybe they were a bit big and intimidating, perhaps some 2 metre ones might be more attractive.

Early in the new-year we got an assets register (done by Ken Thompson)... and I suppose it needs updating already! It was about this time we also got the security system going, not without a few hiccups.

In Aug Tim Morland did a fictional piece on the club in 2041, and a few members missed the date bit! It could go that way if we are not careful. August also had a photo of 3 Prego’s flying with more to come. A credit to Alan Mayhew.

It was also spelled out in this issue about photo credits. If you use a photo in the mag, it needs to be credited to the photographer, and if you didn’t take the photo, you need the photographers permission.

In October we had a UAV group hire our field. Interesting exercise and helped the coffers. We also got the DEFIBULATOR, with a good training session by Deb.

November saw the first ALES competition, with several since. We also had a combined VARMS / SAM day that we must repeat.

2015 started with Camperdown for some, the Sandown Air Races that where we did a display stand. We had the floor painted. Since then we have bought a tractor, a new BBQ, and other odds and sods that benefit members. Our membership also grew by about 50 members

So, what is on the agenda for the next financial year?

• An Air conditioner (for heating in winter) • Move the flight box’s (to the south about10mtrs) • Some shade (just south of the south gate) • A better toilet, maybe septic or sewered • Levelling of the outfield • Re-painting the containers.... working bee?

That is how last year panned out, and some Committee idea’s for the future. Sure, they will cost money, but the Committee are working to chase up Grants to help things along, and so our conditions will improve, but the costs should be able to be kept in check.

The President Colin Collyer

The Committee have worked well together this year, and the members seem happy, so I recommend that the Committee all get another year of office.

See you at the AGM. Don’t have too much tea, as we are having Pizza’s for supper.

Cheers

Col

The Victorian section of the above Association now meets at the VARMS Clubroom on the 4th Thursday in every month, except December when there is no meeting. Starting time is around 8.00 pm. Supper is provided and friendly discussion follows. Attendance fee $3.00 to cover costs. The meeting takes the form of a “show and tell” with members, and others, bringing along their projects to present to the gathering. Also there may be discussion on technical matters related to electric models. There is normally a lot of experience amongst those present, so it is a good time to sort out any problems. Meeting commenced 20:00 with approximately 45 members in attendance

Apologies: Martin Hopper, Peter Cousins, Ian Slack New Members: Ian Spink Visitors: Anthony Mott

Minutes of April Meeting as printed in Aspectivity be accepted. Moved Brian Spencer, Seconded Robert Kassell.

Presidents Report • Colin informed the meeting of the need to build a roof structure between the 2 storage

containers for large/heavy items that cannot be stored in the containers. Minimum estimated cost is $1000. Carried by a show of hands.

• Members will note on the 2015-16 membership form an increase in the new member joining fee. The facilities we currently enjoy have been partly funded by the joining fee which has not changed for some years. To ensure we can continue to provide appropriate facilities for members the joining fee has been increased to $50. Dave Pratley asked if junior members could be exempt from this fee. Colin explained this will be addressed on a case by case basis.

• Thanks to the excellent negotiating skills of Max Haysom we have secured an extension to our lease of 5 years + 2 year option.

General Business • Colin reminded members that those on the mowing roster need to undergo training on

the new tractor before using it. Graham Sullivan is conducting this training. • A lot of time and effort has been put into setting up the library of books and magazines

that have been generously donated to VARMS. It is disappointing to see that magazines and books are being taken and not returned. If you borrow from the library, please make sure you return so that others can make use of the resource.

• For those who ordered VARMS T-shirts from Glenn Salisbury they are now available. Glenn also has a FEW spares for anyone that would like one but has not ordered.

Treasurer Finances are on track. To align our fee structure with the VMAA we now have a single fee that applies to seniors & pensioners. Refer to the 2015-16 membership form for details.

Secretary Correspondence from the VMAA encouraging all members to participate in the MAAA survey. The link to the survey can be found in May Aspectivity or on the MAAA web site.

Aspectivity Glenn advised us that the cupboard is bare. He has used all material submitted by members. Next month will be a very quick read unless members contribute more articles, stories, flying reports etc. to Glenn.

Event Reports Steve Malcman competed in the recent MAAA Nationals and had great success winning the Advanced Helicopter class. Well done Steve. Steve reported the weather was great and it was a very competitive field. Kevin Fry also competed at the Nationals achieving 1st in 38 Antique and 2nd in Nostalgia. Both classes were well supported with 12-18 competitors. Well done Kevin. Bruce Clapperton reported there were approximately 12 flyers for the last ALES event. Results have not yet been published. ALES will resume in October. Bruce also gave advance notice the Vic State Slope Championship will be held in October. Brian Laughton reported on a successful SA/Vic State Old Timer Championship held in Cohuna. There was a good turnout of competitors and the weather was great. Colin Collyer achieved 3rd place in ½A Electric Old Timer.

Show & Tell Bruce Clapperton showed us his new 2.5m Big E-Fair electric glider and reported that it is a quite low cost way to get into an electric glider. First flights indicate that performance is good and the model is suited to the club ALES competition.

Guest Speaker Anthony Mott gave a most entertaining and interesting presentation on his record breaking electric endurance model. Anthony achieved an Australian record flight of 13 hours, 14 minutes with this model. This is not a glider in that the electric motor has to be running for 98% of the total flight time. Anthony has been involved in endurance record attempts for the last 9 years, initially with diesel powered models, before changing to

the electric model. The model uses an OS 3805 electric motor and a 4.2:1 gearbox spinning an 18” prop, with a total wing area of 150 dm2 (2300 in 2) and navigation lights to facilitate flying through the night. Lithium Iron cells are used as they provide a better power to weight ratio than Lithium Polymer cells. He is currently designing and building his next endurance model which will feature a higher aspect ratio wing.

Raffle Naviforce wrist watch won by Jack Bhalla

Meeting closed 21:15 Footnote I would like to thank the members who, before and after the meeting, made comments and put forward ideas and helpful advice on my future project of building an "advanced" model to improve the Australian electric endurance record. All input is good input, and some particularly good observations and tips were proffered. Best wishes to the VARMS organisation and its membership. Best regards, Anthony Mott.

Aspectivity June 2015

With apologies to Victor Meldew of “One Foot in the Grave” TV fame

The good lady says we (she) are due for a holiday….who am I to argue, and next thing I know is that we are in a travel agents. She asks for a short holiday with lots of Sun, Scenery and Serenity. In hindsight I reckon the young sales lass sells second hand cars at the weekend, anyway she was very pleasant and we came out with a holiday for Norfolk Island in two weeks time !!!!. Blimey she doesn't hang about does my missus…...only two weeks away. Norfolk Island sounds a bit like that posh place Hamilton Island but it’s also chocker block full of history. A quick internet search reveals that its only about 8kms x 5kms BUT it has the advantage of being well up out of the waves with lots of lovely looking cliffs to bung a plane off…...Cliffs every which way. Well, if you have to go away and enjoy yourself you’ve got to get your priorities right haven't you!

Another internet search via the Tourist Office revealed that there was a group who played with toy aeroplanes and the tourist office lady supplied me with an email address. Email duly composed in double quick time to find out what was what and where did they do it ?. Transpired that a bloke with a nickname of “Foxy” would be only too happy to see me. Anyway he sent me some photos of his friends and some of their planes….WOW …. what a nice load of aircraft plus he offered to lend me a plane . Little did he know what he was in for…..founding member of “Underground Airways” and recently “Stick it up a tree” exponent…... that’s me. Only trouble was they all fly Mode 2 and I fly mode 1…..no worries says Foxy you can borrow Dallas’s plane he fly’s Mode 1and anyway he will be away. Great…..Norfolk Island here I come !!!!!!!

I had been unable to cram a sloper plus a clean pair of socks and jocks into the suitcase seeing as how she had packed just about everything except the kitchen sink so I had to rely on Foxy’s benevolence. Now I said the island is small and that includes the airport, 2 “International” Sheds and a dunny plus a bloody good sniffer dog, but that’s another story. The baggage handling facilities, all by hand one case at a time!!! but eventually we were outside to be greeted by Valeska from the tourist office and Foxy himself. Brief chat and we agreed that I would phone him after looking around at all the sights for a couple of days.

Norfolk Island is a great place for a quiet, restful and relaxing time once you get over the shock of a 40km/hr speed limit and cows and chooks everywhere on the roads….don't leave your car window open or you will get a message from a local inside…...pray that it was from a chook!!! Anyway we had a good looksee around the place for a cuppla days and then Kay said I could phone Foxy.

Triffik and then the wind stopped blowing !!!!! No worries say Foxy we will slope soar off Slaughter Bay dunes because there was a mild onshore breeze doing its thing….gently…...very gently!. We can use the Bixlers Mk 2 that have been set up with no flaps but full span ailerons and because they are motor assist and we won’t need to walk...so off we set. It was only 5 mins drive but in fairness everywhere is only about 5 mins drive away on Norfolk Island. We skirted their beautiful golf course and there was the beach …..about 5ft below us. Yep 5ft….but it was a rippa beach and it only had water on one side!. Their pristine golf course was on the other side hiding behind a HUGE stand of Norfolk Pines. See why we use Bixlers laughed Foxy….Electric assist and no walking plus we have a purpose made landing platform right on the cliff edge. Us non-islanders would call it a 4ft square picnic table. He then went on to explain that most of the good slope sites had either vertical cliffs, or pine

A Bixler…..I don’t believe it Colin Smith

trees, or both and in most cases there was no way down to retrieve a wayward model so a downwind landing was usually the obvious choice. Even retrieval by boat wasn't on due to the rocky shoreline. The few excellent sites that were grassy usually had tourists admiring the view ….so no flying!. Bixlers were the ideal choice….cheap and cheerful workhorse’s and easily repaired with Adquahere, cyano or poxy.

Everybody flies differently and therefore it was with some trepidation that I assessed Dallas’s model. First flight was actually my first FRIGHT. Dallas it would seem, likes to fly without adjusting any settings so the CG was a bit off and the control deflections a bit on the large side for my taste so I very carefully brought the Bixler around for an into wind landing while Foxy reminded me about the BIG pine trees behind me. He reminded me so therefore I had to oblige and gently land in one....happens all the time...watch out for that tree and wallop!!.... you’ve got it. Fortunately one of the other features of the Bixler is that being EPO foam it withstands the occasional brush with death and so by standing on top of his pickup truck Foxy got the model down unscathed. My excuse was simple... “I said I would do a gentle landing, didn't I?.... I just didn't say where”. Anyway adjustments to the CG were made but the salt atmosphere rendered the linkages solid so I had to fly as it was….. And fly we did…... U-tubes then ‘low level beach beat ups’ became ‘follow the leader’ which turned into ‘How low can you go’ followed by a lot of practice for ‘Touch and Go’s’ (Camperdown is coming up). Touch and go’s turned into ‘slither and slides and retake-off’ (Campers practice again) before you hit the rocks. High altitude “twirly thingys” as Foxy called them turned out to be spins so we counted them….he won, I ran out of fingers. Then when we had got our thumbs well and truly mobile we did low level inverted beach passes but no T&G’s. The onshore breeze died and so did our chances of landing practice on the table top but what the hell we had had a couple of hours fun…...B good fun in the sun and sea-air, in fact it was so good I met Foxy there the next day. Unfortunately there were locals on the beach with their dog. A cross between a rotty with no brakes and a boxer, one BIG strong ugly dog. Anyway Foxy thought it was great because he knew them so we exercised their dog by doing low level passes up and down the beach. He did tell me after a few passes not to land because dear little “snuffles” would tear the plane apart and I think he spoke from experience. All in all another good arvo’s flying and neither of us walked more than 3 steps to pick up our planes. All this on a standard Bixler set up with 3S 2200 battery packs that seemed to give us about 20 mins airtime/ pack with a bit of ‘slope’ lift over the water. Sadly I had to call it quits because it was Kay’s holiday as well anmd we only had 7 days…..”Would both of you like to see the island from the air” asked Foxy as we were packing up….. ‘Blimey would we ...not arf ‘ we said together. The next day we had a message that it was fixed for Sunday to fly around the island. One of his mates, Hayden, had a home built light aircraft that had STOL capabilities and he was going to take us up one at a time for a joy flight. What else can I say except that it was FANBLOODYTASTIC….what a blast…..stick the camera up to the side window ….point and click and hope they come out…...they did…...thanks Hayden.

Just because it’s a small Island doesn't mean that the aeromodelling is small scale, although getting stuff can be a bit of a problem for them, as does the highly corrosive salty atmosphere that can gum things up a bit, but they seem to have most things salted out and covered (pun?....sorted ). It must be said that Foxy doesn't just fly Bixlers he flies just about anything, singles, twins, multies, even those whirly things that are held up by noise. Plus he is an accomplished scratch builder judging by the Typhoon and Mossy hanging in his lounge, both about 6ft wingspan. He has 2 garidges chocka block full of scale foamys plus other big oilies lying around. In fact if you are having trouble sourcing an FMG scale plane ...its probably on Norfolk Island hanging in his garidge. Anyway these are normally flown from a mown strip near

(or on) the golf course of footy field but they start at 6.00 in the morning before tourists are about. Finally I would like to thank Foxy aka Gary McCoy for all his generosity and patience and for the loan of the Bixler, and of course for teeing up Hayden for his scenic flight...without doubt the smoothest flight I made all holiday. I can honestly say I had a blast on the Island as well as a very good holiday….I reckon a revisit is on the cards in the not too distant future. Those 3.6 metre sharks at fish filleting time were as fantastic to see as was the scenery. Foxy can be contacted via me ifffffff anybody is thinking of a holiday on Norfolk Island…..triffik fun had by both Kay-n-me.

Aspectivity June 2015

Well most of you may remember that I purchase an aeroplane in a big box. It must have come from the belly of some burial chamber because the curse was still active.

Yes, I bought sight unseen, a Senior Telemaster a 100 inch (2.4 metre) power plane. “Why?” So that I might tow gliders and reduce the burden on other tug pilots. The criteria was simple enough must be able to pull off the ground a 7kg glider.

So what would I need to do this you ask, 50 cc engine as a minimum, tug weight around 7kg, and a 22X8 prop. The static thrust of this combination would do all I ask as it should produce at 7000 revs, 13.95 kg of thrust and a nominal speed of about 46 knots. At idle it should produce about 0.3 kg of thrust. The 56 cc engine I purchased is capable of all of this and is designed to run 22X8 to 23X10 prop and produce 5.6 horsepower at 7000 revs.

The Telemaster weighed in at 6.850 kg dry weight ready to fly and this included the 200g of tail weight to balance it.

And that is where it all started to go wrong the prop would have hit the ground on flat flight. So I replaced the 4” wheels with 6” wheels and this was marginal at best, so I increased the height by another 1” with carriage stand offs and this too was still marginal. There of course was another problem the amount of thrust produced made it impossible keep it stationary on the ground and continued to climb at idle thus making the only way to land was dead stick.

I needed brakes to stop it on the ground. Oh what a good idea; I made the brakes that could hold the wheels firm without turning, well they don’t need to turn to take off just let go the tail go and the skids work fine.

A compromise was needed so reducing the prop size to 20 X 8 should do. Well how wrong can I be, it was still impossible to keep it still on the ground and landings were hairy at best? Even at idle this combination will make it fly at about 10 knots Well the curse kicked in and it flew into the tip for a rest, a broken battery wire was actually the real cause. Fortunately the bits were still big enough to make it breathe fire again.

A Seniors Moment Lindsay Henderson

Aspectivity June 2015

Another good idea while fixing it, I will put some barn door flaps into the wings while repairing them and this should slow it down on the ground instead of brakes.

Well down to the field we go this makes trip number 9 and still not a full tank of fuel flown in any flight so far. With flaps deployed it is nearly stationary on the strip. Ah!; success at last. A couple of slow passes and it is time to land it, deploy the flaps “wow” why is it trying to do a back flip I’ve got some down in as well and still climbing.

More education needed here the curse is still onboard so level out and bring it home to a dead stick landing again. I’m getting good at those.

A smaller prop now down to 20X6 and some homemade wheel brakes that slow rotation with a rubber bush might nearly do the trick.

The expected performance now is down to 9.3 kg thrust and a 25cc motor will do the job just fine and yes, I have reduced the throttle to be less than half so that it does not over rev.

I am now waiting for a good day when the gods are on my side to have another go.

I will keep you posted.

Cheers Hendo

Training Dates

21st June & 5th July

Training radio Frequencies are now

on 2.4 GHz

VARMS Training is kindly sponsored by:

Hyperion Australia

The Keyboard Your frequency key should have your full name written clearly on it so that you can be easily recognised and contacted in case of a frequency clash. Mobile phone number on the key is a good idea too, in case you have departed and left your key in the board thus stopping someone else using that frequency. Members using 2.4 GHz sets should still insert a standard key in the appropriate section of the keyboard.

VARMS (Inc.) was formed in 1968 to get together aero-modelers who were interested in building and flying radio controlled gliders. Members fly at many places, but have a home field, within the Knox Regional Sports Park (South Wantirna) some 60 metres west of the rear of the State Basketball Centre- Entrance off George Street, where Training Classes with dual controlled gliders are held every second Sunday 10-1.00pm. A calendar for training is attached to the flying field gate.

VARMS Training is kindly sponsored by Hyperion Australia.

VARMS organizes regular competitions in both Slope and Thermal Soaring, from fun-fly, scale, open competition and self launching (electric) gliders. General Meetings are held on the SECOND FRIDAY of each month (except January) – at the VARMS Clubroom near State Basketball Centre (as above) and, during daylight saving time there may be limited flying allowed before Meeting starts at 8.00pm. Visitors are welcome. Formalities are usually followed by lively discussions on matters of interest to all modellers followed by a cup of your favourite brew.
