The creation of the World Wide Web in the 90’s led to the rapid increase in websites and information on the internet. This created a need for search engines to be added like bing or Google.

Between December 1999 and December 2000, the amount of websites on the Internet increased from 9.5 million to over 25 million (BBC 2002)

Currently there are over 600 million sites on the web (Pingdom 2012)

The Need To Categorize

1998 Google created web searches for viewers to find sites more accurately using keywords

People use keywords to increase the probability of their site coming up in search results

The result: people learned to monetize through keyword advertising
