India
The area sown under sesame in India during the ongoing kharif season increased slightly.
During this season the government of India has announced the MSP (minimum support price)
of sesamum by 18 percent to INR 6249 per 100 kg an increase of close to 18 percent when
compared with previous season. Poor rainfall in Gujarat and excess rainfall as well as drought
during the season in Karnataka negated the anticipated increase in area under sesame so far
in the kharif season.
New crop started arrived in the Indian state of Karnataka at Arisekeri and Chitradurga markets
with limited quantities. This time around in Karnataka due to crop damage in recent rains as
well as drought in some regions, the crop is likely to be 50-60 percent of the normal production.
Korea has issued a tender to purchase 6000 ton of sesame and same was awarded to Indian
companies/traders.
In Tamil Nadu demand is good but the availability is less as sowing may start after the
commencement of North-East monsoon in October and the crop is expected to arrive only by
next year March. For most of the grades prices are ruling well above INR 100 per kg and the
prevailing trend is firm and expected to remain firm in the coming months.
Mundra port delivery of sesame seeds for various grades has gone up by INR 5-6 per kg in the
last two to three weeks.
In most of the Northern and Western states of India sesame new crop is likely to hit the markets
post diwali festival (November 1st week onwards).
Overall trend is firm and may remain at elevated levels for the next six to seven week time
period.

in the next one to two weeks as we are approaching the end of the rainy season and then
weather is expected to improve.
The area under sesame crop in Sudan is likely to be higher when compared with previous
season.
Sudanese white sesame (Gadarif) for China, CFR is being offered in the region of USD 1500-
1520 per ton (2017-18 crop) and the same for Non-Gadarif is being offered at USD 1450-1470
per ton CFR.
Ethiopia
New crop is expected to arrive from November 2018 onwards. Rains may continue for one to
two weeks. Weather is forecasted good for the month of October and November, which is
good for the crop to progress.
Ethiopia Whitish Humera Sesame is being offered to China at USD 1500-1530 per ton CFR. At
present no offers for wollega whitish sesame seed.
Nigeria
In Nigeria the new sesame crop has already started to arrive in some regions with thin volumes.
Due to rains during end August the arrivals are slow. Arrivals are expected to pick up in good
numbers from October onwards.

Mozambique
Mozambique new crop arrivals are in last stages. This seasons’ has been good and the quality
was seen better than last years. As we have seen earlier the shipping of sesame from
Mozambique during this season is also slow.
The Mozambique sesame seed to China is being offered at USD 1500-1550 per ton CFR.
Tanzania
In Tanzania the sesame season is almost over and the remaining stocks are with the exporters.
In Sothern parts of the country still some tenders were going on and the offered price were
much higher. Impact of low yield and irrational rains was seen in the Northern part of Tanzania
which has affected the crop. Overall crop size is likely to be below the initial estimates and a
clear picture is likely to emerge soon. Not much offers at the moment but the indications are
in excess of USD 1550 per ton to China CFR.
China market at a glance
At present more than 100,000 tons of stocks were lying at various ports of China. The Chinese
Yuan which has weakened by more than 5 percent against the dollar since the beginning of
this year to some extent suppressed the Chinese buyer’s aggressive approach.
In the local market price from various origins/various grades were quoted in the region of CNY
10000 and CNY 11500 per ton.
