Hi everyone! Welcome to the 8th Edition of the Seascape Surveyor. Our management summary is written by Mark Shepherd, Executive Director of Mermaid Offshore Services Ltd. Please take note of our new campaign regarding waste management, which we hope will be implemented by all Seascape Surveys personnel. We are also announcing several new middle management position appointments in our Jakarta Office (refer Page 6). Please keep sending us your project photographs, articles and suggestions for the newsletters. As always please keep working safely wherever you are.

Mark Shepherd

Executive Director of Mermaid Offshore Services Limited

Welcome to another edition of Seascape Surveyor and many thanks to Shaun, Peter and the guys for asking me to write the introduction. It is now around two years since Seascape Surveys joined the MOS group of companies in what has been an interesting time to say the least.

Seascape Surveys has rapidly become an integral part of the MOS business and is integrating not just in survey, but in high quality inspection and reporting and now, becoming the face of MOS in Indonesia, which is certainly keeping Peter and the team in Jakarta busy !

This does not of course mean that Seascape Surveys is not growing and expanding in its own right, growing geographically into new markets with the current project in Australia being a good example.

The last year has been slow, and although Seascape Surveys have continued to perform strongly, it does seem though that things are already returning to normal and that the Seascape Surveys personnel involved in supporting MOS operations will be traveling further afield as MOS establishes itself in the Middle East and continues to develop other opportunities.

The purchase of deep water ROV’s by MOS not only increases the requirement for survey, but also the possible development of new business areas such as a geotechnical capability, currently being championed by Adrian. We are always looking for further growth opportunities and appreciate that without the enthusiasm of the entire team this would not be possible.

Seascape Surveys: CHEVRON 2009 Installation Campaign

Seascape Surveys were awarded the contract for provision of Survey and Postioning Services onboard the DLB Commanche for Global Industries, during the Chevron 2009 Installation Campaign.

The 2009 campaign included platform and pipeline installations, tie-in spool and riser installations (using DSV Mermaid Commander), and pipeline hydro-test and flooding in the Gulf of Thailand.

DLB Global Comanche started platform and pipeline installation operations in June 2009 and completed in December 2009. The DLB Global Comanche is a heavy lift barge with the main crane having a 1000 tons lifting capacity, and capable of laying pipeline of varying dimensions.

Seascape Surveys personnel and equipment was mobilized in Batam Indonesia in May 2009 and equipment also setup during towing to Thailand. A wide range of equipment was used on board the barge and support vessels.

In addition to a barge management system installed on the barge and Anchor Handling vessels (AHT), a Sonardyne Ranger Pro USBL system was used on the barge to provide under water positioning for divers, ROV and during pipeline touch down position determination.

Remote positioning and heading systems were installed on the platforms during installation, providing real time position and orientation of the jacket to assist during lifting and positioning by the crane.

Additionally, Trimble 5700 receivers were used to perform high accuracy static GPS measurements for as-built platform positions.

The 6” and 10” pipeline start-up and lay-down heads were installed using different methods depending on the location and engineering calculations.

In the production areas, the start-up head was connecting directly to the platform. In open areas the start-up head was installed by way of a Dead Man Anchor (DMA). The USBL system was used to monitor the start-up head position.

Touchdown monitoring, and positioning during pipeline lay-down and pipelines crossing was performed in conjunction with the Sonsub ROV team onboard.

All vessel movement and anchor repositioning was managed using Navipac Barge Management System, with reference to the approved anchor patterns from the client. Pipeline sleepers and mattresses were also installed from the stern of the Comanche at pipeline crossings.

The as-built pipeline reports were submitted directly following completion of each pipeline section.

Platform jacket position and orientation data was provided in realtime using a C-NAV GPS receiver, Octans Gyrocompass and Satel telemetry system installed onboard the jacket.

It is fair to say we are looking at a bright future for MOS and Seascape Surveys, and I hope we will be able to provide opportunities for all of our personnel, who we regard to be our greatest asset, to achieve their goals and continue to enjoy working in a safe and rewarding environment where their efforts are appreciated.

I hope we continue to grow together as a team and as a company; I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months and hope to see more joint social events to help build the team spirit further. In the meantime, please continue to work safely, and return to your families fit and well after each trip. Above all thank you for the effort of each and every member of the team for actively contributing to the reputation and success we enjoy as a leader in our field.

Best regards

Mark

Seascape Surveys Waste Management Campaign Commencing 2010, in line with our commitment to minimize our environmental impact, we have initiated waste segregation of the waste produced in Jakarta office (other offices to follow).

Waste will be segregated as follow:

1. Paper, cardboard, cartoon boxes, etc 2. Plastic, Can, Styrofoam, Glass, non toxic metal, etc 3. Food waste 4. Universal wastes (waste batteries, CRC, WD40, scrap cable, E-wastes, etc)

Please put waste into their designated bin. Bins will be labeled according to its designation respectively.

All the bins under or close to your desk are for paper only.

Read the following in order to eliminate or reduce waste generated in the first place, especially paper waste:

Utilise double-sided printing where possible

Reuse paper for draft document copies or as phone/scribble pads

Reduce email printing or read documents on screen instead of printing hardcopies

Before copying documentation ensure you have set up the photocopier to copy correctly

Reuse envelopes for internal mail usage.

Make sure you've got a desk-side recycling box for your paper; please ask for one if you don’t have it.

Celebrate Chinese New Year 2010

Seascape Surveys benefits from being a multinational company with staff from all different cultures and religions. The result is many occasions to learn about the celebrations each hold year.

The Chinese staff of the Singapore office recently celebrated Chinese New Year and for at least a couple of us non Chinese it was a first experience.

Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year as it is sometimes referred to, probably the most important celebration of the year and one of the traditions is the tossing of a salad called Yusheng.

To experience this, a few of us met at the Sakae Sushi restaurant in Changi Airports terminal 2 on the 6th February 2010. Apart from the member from the Singapore office, we had members of the offshore team and Ovie from Jakarta Office. We all tossed the salad and made a wish at the same time as is customary. I’m not telling you what these were but here’s hoping they all come true.

After the meal we headed to Starbucks for a coffee and a chat before finding a particularly well designed flower arrangement in honour of Valentine’s day.

It was decided it would be a great place to have a company picture (Adrian’s idea, I promise!!!). It’s a very special moment captured on film and was worth the space in this newsletter.

Gong Xi Fa Cai… (William Ridsdill)

Captain Mike Meade of M3 Marine acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which included a Lion Dance, speeches from Mermaid Offshore Services and Jaya management personnel. The traditional blessing and champagne moment was followed by a guided tour of the vessel.

After the ceremony the guests enjoyed a pleasant dinner at Raffles Marina. Special thanks are due to Chris Ang for helping out with planning the event.

Potential hazards surround us at home, in the workplace, in our cars and even in health care facilities. Given exposure to these hazards, we may want to evaluate the risk that an adverse event will occur or that it will occur at some level of severity.

According to statistics, it is an unfortunate fact that the workplace is the cause of accident and injuries for an alarming number of workers.

Seascape Surveys believe that all incidents and injuries are preventable. Seascape Surveys aim to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all Seascape Surveys and contract personnel.

Employees are also encouraged to know their responsibilities about safety in the workplace.

It is important for every employee to identify what kinds of potential hazard exist within their workplace, and to follow safe work practices.

We all must realized that prevention is better than a cure and we should all look to prevent hazards within our own workplace.

Why is Hazard Identification important ?

Hazard is a condition or action that has the potential for an unplanned release of, or unwanted contact with, an energy source that may result in harm or injury to people, property or the environment.

The objective of Hazard Identification is to provide you with a method to identify hazardous sources in your environment, enable you to identify potential hazards associated with energy sources and finally, enhance your hazard assessment skills.

Chevron is a leading company in the Oil and Gas industry and has established a Hazard Identification Tool to manage safe work. Seascape Surveys learned about this tool while attending the various “Safety Day” sessions organized by Chevron Thailand and Mermaid Offshore Services during 2009.

Hazard Identification Tools

Chevron defined Hazard Identification tools as below, - A visual aid that helps you to focus on hazard

identification. - A tool that helps you to identify hazards

based on energy source identification. - A simple method to help you complete daily

activities and tasks safely and reliably. - A tool which easily integrates with existing

hazard assessment methodologies such as JSA, SPSA, JHA, THA, TIF, JLA, etc.

Do you recognise hazards surround

Energy Sources

Gravity: The force caused by the attraction of all other masses to the mass of the earth. Examples: falling object, collapsing roof, and a body tripping or falling.

Motion: The change in position of object or substances. Example: vehicle, vessel or equipment movement; flowing water; wind; and boding positioning: lifting, straining, or bending.

Mechanical: The energy of the components of a mechanical system, i.e. rotation, vibration, motion, etc. within otherwise stationary piece of equipment/machinery. Examples: rotating equipment, compressed springs, drive belts, conveyors, and motors.

Electrical: The presence and flow of an electric charge. Example: power lines, transformers, stating charges, lightning, energized equipment, wiring, and batteries.

Pressure: Energy applied by a liquid or gas which has been compressed or under a vacuum. Example: pressure piping, compressed cylinders, control lines, vessels, tanks, hoses, and pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

Temperature: The measurement of differences in the thermal energy of objects or the environment, which the human body senses as either heat or cold. Example: open flame; ignition sources; hot or cold surfaces, liquid or gases; steam; friction; and general environmental and weather conditions.

Chemical: The energy present in chemicals that inherently, or through to create a physical or health hazards to people, environment or equipment. Examples: flammable vapors, reactive hazards, carcinogens or other toxic compounds, corrosives, combustibles, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, welding fumes, and dusts.

IT KnowledgeHi all,

Have you ever been confused about setting up a system on a vessel ? Or do you need to control another computer in a different location on the vessel ?

I am sure some of you know how to do it, and some totally have no idea about we are talking about. There is a simple way to control another computer remotely. Sounds cool ?

There a lots of software for remote controlling another computer, including Damnware, VNC, Windows Remote Desktop, but these are often difficult to use. I would like to introduce my favorite remote software called TeamViewer. www.teamviewer.com .

I have been using this software for years, and it gives me total satisfaction, for easy installation, user friendly interface, and the simplest way to take control of another computer.

Using team viewer is brainless. With this you can connect to any computer in the world via internet link. A sample screenshot is shown below from when I connected to Rud’s computer in Thailand, from my office in Jakarta...Thanks Rud!

The method is simple. Clients only need to supply ID and password for the computer provided by team viewer on their side. Once connected, you can view and fully control the computer.

This will help a lot if you are offshore and forgot about Navipac setting or Qinsy, can ask help from the Master in the Onshore to take a look. Or even do all the setting up.

One thing to remember, this is a support software not a hacking software, you will need both parties to acknowledge the connection.

So if you have some problem offshore and got good internet link, you can try this thing.

Any question and comment just put on my mailbox. [email protected]

Biological: Living organisms that can present a hazard. Example: animals, bacteria, viruses, insects, blood-borne pathogens, improperly handled food, and contaminated water.

Radiation: The energy emitted from radioactive elements or sources and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). Example: lighting issues, welding arcs, solar rays, microwaves, lasers, X-Rays, and NORM scale.

Sound: Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate. The energy is transferred through the substance in waves. Example: equipment noise, impact noise, vibration, high pressure release, and the impact of noise to communication.

Now, can you identify energy sources on this picture below,

If we can identify what energy source around our workplace then we enable to identify what potential hazard within our workplace. Finally, we can manage our work practice going to safe work behaviors. Because of we are safety manager of ourselves.

To Error is Human, To Recover is Divine

last edition of the Seascape Surveyor newsletter, we explained the process and benefits of Ghost. Following up from this, here is more information, including the origins of Ghost. To refresh your memory, Ghost is some software that allows you to restore a computer to a previous state (to its state when it was documents to another media like External Hard drive before you Ghost back. Once BART PE is loaded, you need only to open an application that acts just like Windows Explorer, an our data to your backup media (external hard drive). The Bart PE “Windows Explorer” is shown below. It is very simple to copy data from here, just follow the same steps as you would in the usual Windows Explorer. Bart PE will be distributed to all projects on a field CD set along with the Ghost Recovery CD. Please keep in mind that we try to avoid reinstalling Windows wherever possible - the best way is we use the Ghost Recovery CD. It’s very simple to use this software, it is just like using the Ghost Recovery CD, where insert the CD, and let the computer boot from the CD.

This is the desktop screen for BART PE (left). It appears just like Windows XP, with the “Start” button on the bottom left.

Full Team of Seascape Surveys Indonesia Personnel Christmas Tree in Singapore Office in action

During pile driving, precise leveling was used to check the level of each pile installed. A tide gauge was installed on each jacket to determine platform elevation with respect to mean sea level. The as-built position and orientation of each platform was calculated using static GPS and platform resection methods.

Current speed and direction were observed continuously through all operations to assist the barge, ROV, and AHT’s during maneuvering.

Although not involving Seascape Surveys personnel, several incidents and near misses that occurred during this project served as a reminder to us of how important safety procedures, communications, and team work are. Performing toolbox talks, making risk assessments and performing job safety analysis for specific jobs are always required as part of our everyday jobs.

All personnel onboard did a great job and the team work was great during sometimes difficult conditions offshore, and the team was fully supported from Seascape Surveys personnel in Jakarta and Singapore offices.
